“THE SISTERS OF CHARITY – HALIFAX AND THEIR ASSOCIATES RENEW THEIR VOWS AND COMMITMENT” We are delighted to host the renewal or vows by the Sisters of Charity – Halifax and the recommitment by their Associates at the 12:30 PM Mass this Sunday. This is a special honor for us because S. Maryanne Fitzgerald and S. Susan Smolinsky live in our parish convent and regularly worship here at St. James Church. S. Maryanne and S. Susan are celebrating their 50

th Jubilee with the Sisters of Charity.

If you are not familiar with the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, I’d like to share with you this short history. In 1924, four valiant women traveled from Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York. The Sisters came to Brooklyn – to Our Lady of Angels parish to open a school and to continue the good work that had begun in Canada. In September 1924 six Sisters welcomed 350 children in eight classes. Already the Sisters were collaborating with the laity, with four teaches joining them at OLA School. The Sisters also taught religion classes and prepared children to receive Communion and Confirmation. Because the convent was not ready for the Sisters, they created a “convent space” in the school and slept in this area until the convent was completed in 1927! The school of OLA continued to grow, and the ministry of education by the Sisters of Charity expanded to other parishes including St. Barnabas in Bellmore (1931), Our Lady Help of Christians in Brooklyn, St. Aidan in Williston Park, St. Nicholas of Tolentine in Jamaica, Resurrection-Ascension in Rego Park, and Our Lady of Good Counsel on Staten Island, to name a few. The first high school founded by the Sisters of Charity in New York was opened in 1937 as Patchogue Catholic High School, which was renamed Seton High School in 1940. Staffed by four Sisters, the school opened with an enrollment of seven boys and ten girls and within just a few years, the number of students had grown to 100. Over 90 years since arriving at Our Lady of Angels, Sisters of Charity, Halifax, continue to have a significant impact on so many people in New York. The ministry of the Sisters is still evident in the field of education. Many new ministries have been added to the list of places where Sisters of Charity minister – places of need for women and children, parish ministry and a wide variety of social service ministry settings. These new responses to new needs are but a new expression of the same mission of the four Sisters who arrived in Brooklyn, New York in 1924. The Sisters of Charity, with respect for the past and with enthusiasm for the future, continue to respond to needs as they “give joyful witness to Love: the love of God, of one another, and of all persons.” We congratulate the Sisters of Charity and all their Associates! Thank you for the many years of service that you have provided to the Church!

“Wonderful Pre-Advent Mission” We are so grateful for the wonderful Pre-Advent Mission, “Simple Happiness,” that was preached by Jim Ryan. Approximately, 115 people came to the Mission each evening as Jim spoke to us about how happiness is within our reach depending on the choices we make each and every day. I want to express my gratitude to our ushers who assisted each evening with the distribution of programs and the collections, to Gina Drost, Pattie Lafferty and Diane Sabino for the sale of Jim Ryan’s books and tapes. Thanks also to the members of Family Ministry for hosting the social gathering at the conclusion of the Mission and to all those who brought goodies for us to share.

Did you know you can

make your own Advent calendar with just some

paper and a stapler? Cut strips of paper (I

found some good stuff on the internet to print out)

and number them 1 to 24. Staple the first one in a circle and then loop the

next strip into the first and staple the ends, this

creates a chain. Remove one each night. It’s never too late to start.

History of the Advent Calendar In 1908 Gerhard Lang, who worked at a printing office in Germany, had an idea based on a tradition from his childhood. Lang’s mother would make him an Advent calendar by attaching 24 little candies to a cardboard. He decided to design his own version and created colored pictures that were fixed to a cardboard. Historians generally credit Lang for producing the first printed Advent calendar. This was soon followed by a calendar that had little doors to open every day in preparation for Christmas and the novelty became very popular in Germany. By the 1950s these calendars became more complex and held chocolates for each day of December. From there the yearly tradition spread throughout Europe and the United States and is now one of the most popular traditions, after the Christmas tree. The reason why the “Advent” calendars start on December 1 and not when the liturgical season begins is because of the wide variation in dates when Advent begins. At first these calendars were re-used each year, and starting on December 1 made it possible to keep the calendar for future use. This eventually became an accepted standard and even though new calendars are made every year, the tradition of starting the calendar on December 1 has been maintained.

Please note** The last day of Classes before the Christmas break is Dec 18th. Classes will resume on Jan 2nd .
