December again! where has this year gone? and with Christmas just around the corner, the club held its annual dinner at the South Hummocks Club again, enjoying a Webber cooked Pork,

Chicken and Beef, with roast potatoes and vegetables + all the trimmings. Followed by a delicious Pavlova put together by our own Kelvin, with a few other nice deserts for if you didn’t like Pav. Those that attended had a

good evening, a big Thank You to all that helped on the night. Well with only one more flying weekend before Christmas, fingers crossed the weather is with us and 2017 has a little

less wind than 2016 and we can get out a lot more to enjoy this great sport!Last up I would just like to say to all, from the members of the South Hummocks Model Aero Club, have a very Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year, Enjoy! But remember to Drive safe! So we can all be here for 2017Cheers ChuckT

MODEL SAFETY – MAINTENANCE

You do undertake pre-flight checks, don’t you? What about post-flight checks?Once your latest model has been built/assembled and test flown, some of us tend to forget those essential inspection/

maintenance requirements. Full size pilots would not dream of taking off without checking to make sure the aircraft was safe for flight. So what’s different with our models? Nothing – we also have an obligation to make sure our models are safe for flight.

In the pre-2.4 GHz days we were taught to undertake a pre-flight check that consisted of:•a range check where you would walk 30 paces away from the model and see if all controls were operative with the

transmitter antenna in the collapsed position; and

•applying the CAT mnemonic:

oControls operating in the correct sense;

oAntenna (transmitter and receiver aerial) extended;

oTrims centred (if the transmitter had manual slider type trims instead of digital). Also, when assembling the model in the pits you would check to see if anything was loose, fractured or broken, or

potentially dangerous.Nowadays most of us are 2.4 GHz users, but nevertheless a range and control check should still be part of your pre-flight

check. What if you forgot to fully charge the Tx or on-board battery pack before you came to the field? What if the receiver or battery pack were dislodged or damaged during a heavy landing last time the model flew? Also, don’t forget the correct alignment of the Tx and Rx antennas.

Post-flight is always a good opportunity to check the model, especially when cleaning oil residue as this requires getting into all the nooks and crannies. Even if you are an electron user there still will be dust, dirt, mud, grass etc. that accumulates on the model. Engine vibration, harmonic resonance, aggressive aerobatics, heavy landings/arrivals can all contribute to a weakening of the airframe and consequential disaster. None of us want our model to self-destruct mid-air, do we? It’s bad enough when bits fall off after a heavy landing, but trekking through the outlying scrub to recover lost engines, battery packs etc. is not something to look forward to. Then after the trek you have to remove all the burs that attach themselves to your socks (which is how the hook and loop (Velcro) fastener system was discovered).

There’s an old aviation saying that an aircraft cannot fly until the weight of the paperwork (maintenance, flight planning etc.) is equal to the weight of the aircraft. We modellers don’t need to get bogged down with such paperwork but we should certainly undertake essential maintenance activities. A periodic check of all nuts, bolts, screws and associated fittings should be part of the maintenance routine. Going over these items with a screwdriver or appropriate tool is safer than just eyeballing them.

Maintenance does not take too much time. It will help make the model safer to fly and hopefully prolong its life.Come on – play the game and maintain!

ONKAPARINGA RADIO AERO MODELLERS

Dead Stik, the tale of the lost aircraft.

Many of us, if not all of us, have had to go through the pain of losing a model. Some of us see where the model goes in, and it’s usually a quick recovery. What if your model went in, behind a tree? What if you didn’t see the point of impact? Well this is a story of such a crash. Our club rules state that we shouldn’t fly outside of the perimeter of our land, sometimes it is difficult to judge the distance and sometimes things go wrong, very wrong. We are lucky that around our field we mostly have vacant fields that are used for crops. So hitting anything besides the ground is quite uncommon. With this crash we hope that it is used as a lesson, which we all can learn from. This is the story of the recovery of an aircraft which, guided by unluckiness, ended up in another field. This is a story of how I used modern technology, in the form of a DJI Phantom 4 camera platform, to help locate the missing aircraft, and bring it back to its owner.

A member of our club, the Onkaparinga Radio Aero Modellers (ORAM), recently emailed me about an aircraft he lost near the model field, which is located at Sanderston, South Australia. The aircraft was a model kit called the Ugly Stik. It read;

“Hi Andy, My grandson and I had an unfortunate incident on Sunday when I was flying Louis’ Ugly Stik . I lost the model somewhere between the single and double gates in the paddock on the other side of The Pines Road and due to the height of the crop it couldn’t be found. If by chance you might be up there with a drone I wondered if it would possible to overfly the area with the hope of locating the aircraft?”

Details about the accident, at this time, were not detailed. Unfortunately my multirotor or drone as he put it, is a racing quadcopter, and would not be up to the task, so I borrowed a friend’s DJI Phantom 4, which I thought would be much better at locating the downed aircraft, or so I had hoped.

Immediately, I started to organise a day suitable to locate the aircraft. I chose Friday 2nd November, 2016, 5 days after the aircraft was lost. I put an email out to members of ORAM, which could help with the locating of the aircraft. Many members replied saying they were busy on the day, so it was looking like I was going to be doing this alone. I did receive one email, from a member with a little more detail on where the aircraft may be. It read;

“Hi Andrew, I don’t know if I can help but I was standing next to the pilot when his plane was lost. He was flying parallel with Pines road, coming from the north to south just over tree top height of the large gum the other side of the road between our two gates. I think that he was just over the fence in the crop paddock but it is hard to tell. Just past the large gum his plane dropped, I think the left wing lost height and went out of sight behind the scrubby trees. The pilot would have pulled up elevator which would have sent his plane knife edge in to the crop. I put my camera facing down on the Bixler and went over the crop, up to the dry dam with lots of runs parallel to the fence. Our TV viewing that night was the footage slowed down and we couldn’t see it. My son and I went out Tuesday and walked the road for an hour so I don’t think that it is there. I feel it is somewhere behind the big tree, there was about 4 second motor run after it went out of view.

Good luck”

With this email, I was able to narrow the search area, but until I was out there, I was not sure of the location of the aircraft.

Conditions on the day were almost perfect, light winds, a partially sunny sky and a few hours to look for the plane. I was working in the morning, so it wasn’t until about 2:30pm, before I was able to be at the field. There was some cloud about, which covered the sun a few times. I wondered how this would affect the visibility of the plane from the air. “Would I be able to see it in the cropped field? I asked myself.

I arrived at the field around 2:15pm on the day I had chosen. I prepared the DJI Phantom 4, for flight. This is a remarkable machine, GPS tracking, object avoidance and a 4K camera. Setting up of the Phantom is a very painless job. Clip on propellers are great, they just push on and lock into place. Using an Apple iPad, the screen is very easy to read, with everything on the screen you need, altitude, distance from home point, return to home button, battery power and time remaining.

The first flight with a fresh battery was unsuccessful in locating the aircraft. I made numerous runs up and down the fence line at an altitude of approximately 120 metres, maximum height for the Phantom 4. It gave a nice field of view of the ground, when the camera was pointing that way. I was able to go forward and turn around all without losing altitude, which made searching so much easier. I enabled the return to home function, and the Phantom 4 landed almost on the same spot from where it had taken off from. I decided to head to the clubrooms to have a drink and see if the aircraft might have been put around the area, in the likely event the owner of the property had found it. The aircraft was not there.

I was up to my second battery, and only having 3 batteries at my disposal, I was getting a little nervous I wouldn’t be able to find it. I decided to have another look at the emails and try to piece together the probable location. The 4 second motor run, concerned me a little, model aircraft can still travel some distance in a short amount of time, so I knew it could have been further out. I set out again, this time going directly out from the big tree, over the field. I made a series of turns and zig zagged my way around. This path I chose put me over some trees and rain water tanks in one part of the field.

I was looking around, when suddenly; something red and white caught my eye. I went a little closer. There it was the wing of the aircraft. I was not recording, so I started to record from then. I over flew the area, adding to my mind the location of the plane and where it was in relation to where I was. It was located 250metres from where I had taken off from. I was able to tell

from the footage I was looking at, that the fuselage was just inside the crop, with the wing further away. It may have been blown there, by the wind. I could also tell that I didn’t have to trample through the farmers field to get there. There was a natural depression where water sometimes runs, which made a path almost directly to the downed aircraft. I took a couple of photos from the camera on board the Phantom 4, and made my way back, using the Phantom’s return to home function once again.

Once I had the Phantom back in its case and secure, I grabbed a garbage bag and camera, and headed out to where the plane was located. The walk to the crash site was easy going, and I was able to follow the edge of the crop to the location.

The crash site was not immediately obvious until you were almost on top of it. The wing the most obvious part, tucked away under a tree.

I took some other photos from around the crash site, including the fuselage, which sustained quite a bit of damage and was almost hidden on the edge of the crop. Other parts of the aircraft were strewn around the area. I carefully picked up every bit of covering and lose balsa wood I could find and put them in the garbage bag. Then the wing and fuselage followed. I made my way back to my car and the rest is history.

Andrew Wall.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank, Peter W, Steve R, and Alan B for the help I received during this retrieval operation. The picture of the Ugly Stick was sourced off the internet. All other Photographs were taken by the author during the retrieval operation. Thanks to Steve R for the idea for the title.

CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB

70th Anniversary Flying Day By Don Howie

The day on 20th November had perfect flying conditions and was attended by a large number of modellers from various clubs. Constellation produced a cloth badge for the 70th anniversary and this is shown in the photo.

The club was started in 1946 by Brian Horrocks who became a top control line flyer in the UK, during the late 1950’s and early 60’s. In the 1960’s Doug Saxby was the President, with Graham Ward being Secretary/Treasurer. This was the era of serious radio control and the introduction of multi proportional (full house) radio control.

In 1969, the Club bought “Woodstock” flying field (10 acres) near St Kilda road and radio control grew rapidly in the Club. In 1978, a larger field was needed as the field too small. A move was made to the present field (over 20 acres) and much development took place. A further 20 acres was later

obtained to the east with the amalgamation with N.E.D.A.C.Club. This is the present field and improvements continue as I write this story.

Our patron, John Bergamin, who has been in the Club since the 1970’s , flew into the field with his Piper Pacer. Today, a great variety of R/C aircraft are flown and highly detailed scale aircraft seem to be very popular and the following pictures shown are models from WW1 to the preset day.

Starting with the earliest aircraft is the Neuport 17 at ¼ scale (88 inch span) is with CMFC member Andrew Young. It has a DLE 40 twin petrol engine, Coverall plus silver paint finish.

John Millan has another old aircraft from the 1930’s , this being a 22% Stampe (82 inch span) built from the Precedent Kit (UK). This aerobatic European bi-plane is powered by an OS 120 Surpass 4 stroke and is covered with Solartex. The excellent cowl was made by Barry Carpenter.

This is the first time I have seen the Terry Cosh Hawker Hurricane flown by Mike Savill (also shown in the photo) The full size aircraft flown in Augusat 1940 by Robert Stanford Tuck in the Battle of Britain. The model is1/5th scale, built from the Vailley plan ( USA), the model uses an OS 55cc petrol engine, turning a 24x10 wooden prop (not scale). He has used Coverall covering and standard water based (matt) paint.

Pylon racing is very popular in Constellation Club, the “Shoestring”being a popular F1 aircraft, this aircraft made popular by Jim Lynch, the longest living member in Constellation. The model was built by Mike Savill and now

owned by Steve Wilkin. It has an ASP 120, 2 stroke glo, turning a 16x8 MEJZLIK prop and acrylic paint. The greatest development in recent years has been the jet or gas turbine engine, that gives an authentic sound and

feeling to the modern full size copies in minature.Garry Bergen never ceases to amaze with his fantastic large aircraft and two of his gas turbine models are shown in

the last photo. Closest to the camera is the US, F16 Falcon powered by a Jet Cat 180 turbine that is said to give 48 lbs thrust. The model is a Skymaster ARF plus with Desert Aggressor paint scheme and details added by Garry. At 35lbs weight performance is spectacular.

The model at the rear is an L39 Albatross jet from Yugoslavia. The jet legend kit with gelcote finish is powered with a Jet Cat P160 SX jet giving 36lbs thrust.

An excellant lunch was provided by Rod Spurrier and his team, making it a memorable 70th Anniversary day.

ADELAIDE AEROMODELLERS CLUB

Some much improved weather in November allowed a few events that were postponed to be run. However it seems that many prospective entrants are stuck in Winter doldrums. Nevertheless stunt and combat

events with newcomer friendly formats have been mildly successful.

AAC Club Combat November 19th

This event was proposed by Maris Dislers to encourage those who have not flown combat to have a go. The rules are quite simple. In essence, there is no airtime, contestants must be airborne for all 3 minutes of the combat period. A crash due to pilot error results in DQ.’ No fault’ mid airs and line tangles result in a refly.

Streamer strings are 1 m longer than standard and maximum permitted airspeed is 30 laps / 10 seconds with streamer on FAI length lines. There are no model or motor restrictions. The winneof a bout is determined purely by the number of cuts.

Despite the simple rules it took a couple of bouts for both the officials and competitors to adapt to the new format. Two newcomers to combat, Allan Morris and Jeff Fry both acquitted themselves well. Bill Pudney unfortunately had to retire after a very short bout against Peter Anglberger after a line tangle and crash damaged his only model.

This left 3 entrants to fly a semi round robin event:Bout 1; Jeff Fry flew a borrowed (from Peter) Russian 1/2A Parra 2.5 Steel powered model against Allan’s 15 glow

powered Coreflute. Jeff took advantage of Allan’s poor motor run and took a single cut. to win 1-0

Bout 2: The early line tangle forced Bill to retire so no refly took place.

Bout 3: Peter flew one of his oft repaired and now somewhat heavy Andurils powered by a Taipan series 71 diesel. Allan was on the attack immediately and took a quick cut. Peter chased taking a half streamer cut, then the string near the end of the bout to win 2-1

Allan was out of the event due to two losses and the third bout was the final as both Peter and Jeff were on 1 win each

Bout 3 / Final; By now the officials and competitors had hit their straps and a reasonable display of combat eventuated. Both flyers took a cut early on, Peter then cut Jeff’s string and had to work hard to evade an ever more aggressive Jeff until combination of enthusiasm and flying through the sun resulted in Jeff flying into the rear of Peter’s Anduril resulting in destruction of the elevator and rear third of the wing. Under the rules this resulted in a DQ for Jeff but would likely have ended as a 2-1 win to Peter.

Results:

The turnout was a little disappointing but on the positive side the new combat flyers enjoyed the event and vowed to enter the next one early in 2017

AAC were invited by the Noarlunga club to put on a CL demo during the RC pilot’s lunch break. The weather was almost perfect, sunny around 25C but a westerly wind rather than the forecast SE’er made flying tricky as the RC strip was oriented North / South. That same westerly blew over buildings and trees so created some turbulence for both the slower radio models and CL F2B.

Jeff Prosser performed a tidy F2B pattern in front of around 300 spectators. He said he had a few butterflies at the start, but soon got into the groove, well done Jeff. The NMAS photographer took a large number of excellent photos, some

of which are included in this article. The second part of the AAC ‘spot’ was a

100 lap 2 stop Diesel Goodyear race to fit in with the day’s scale theme.

The teams were:Rob Fitzgerald / Maris Dislers with a

Mr DThe race got off to a good start with all

three teams in the air quickly so all was set for a good race for the spectators until the first pit stop. Unfortunately due to the wind direction the pits were on the far side of the RC strip where the grass cover was very closely cut stubble but with a few stalks protruding high enough to snag lines and this is what occurred to both Bainbridge / Stephens and Morris / Fry on take-off after the first stop. Both ran in and it was decided not to risk retrieving the models. This left Fitzgerald / Dislers to ‘win’ with a time of 5’25”. Despite the disappointing finish the first 4 minutes were of a good standard, so gave the crowd a taste CL racing.

At the event Rob Fitzgerald was presented with membership of the MAAA Hall of Fame award by MAAA / MASA President Neil Tank, as recognition of winning the F2C Team race gold medal at the 2016 World F2 CLChampionships held earlier this year in Perth.

AAC F2B Handicap Aerobatics December 3rd

The westerly wind through Park 19’s 30 m tall Red Gums made for somewhat turbulent air. Only 3 entries managed official flights. Peter Anglberger judged the event.

Jeff Prosser suffer the loss of his electric trivial pursuit the previous week due to sudden power loss during the vertical climb in the clover. The damage to the power train and model was significant so fault finding afterwards proved difficult. His bad luck continued during the comp, the normally rock steady LA 46 in his Formula S developed a back plate leak that prevented him competing despite normal operation in two practice flights earlier in the day.

Bill Pudney also had issues with his PAW 2.49 powered Junior Flight Streak which prevented him from competing. This left Russell Bond, Jeff Fry and Mal Dyer to ‘duke’ it out. AAC 2016 Worldwide Ringmaster Flyathon October 8th 2016

The dates for the World Wide Ringmaster Flyathon this year were October 1st and 2nd. Originally an event was organised for these dates by

Ned Kelly at the South Hummocks Model Aero Club in South Australia’s mid north approx.100km from Adelaide. Unfortunately strong winds in the wake of recent storms forced it’s cancellation.

All was not lost as Flyathon organiser in the USA, John Cralley, kindly granted would be SA participants until the end of the following weekend to log flights. Adelaide Aeromodellers Club scheduled Saturday October 8th as Ringmaster Flyathon ‘make up’ day and for the first time in months the weather was not only kind, it was near perfect; warm, sunny and light winds.

4 pilots posted flights as detailed below. The Ringmaster flights took place amidst other CL sport flying. Other popular profile models flown on the day were Peacemaker, Flite Streak, Junior Flite Streak, SIG Twister and Proton sheet wing stunt model

Jeff Prosser’s Ringmaster flew the F2B pattern with ease thanks due to it’s light weight and reliable powerplant. Peter Anglberger started slowly having to coax a good setting out of his recently re-bored 1957 Burford Glo Chief 29 Mk1.

In the final flights his Ringmaster and motor were ‘sorted’ allowing Square 8s and Triangles to be performed with ease.

Ned Kelly’s model also performed well. It really improved when he switched form a Master Airscrew paint stirrer to an APC 9 x 4 prop. Ned’s model lost weights as the day went on as he unfortunately fund ut that White Knight Rattle can paint is not fuel proof. He is in the process of building a new Ringmaster with a more suitable finish. Jon Witzke has also now sorted his Fox 35 powered Ringmaster. There was no hint of the dreaded Fox burp so I assume he has

1. Select wood carefully and finish sparingly to ensure a light model. Aim for less than 30 oz / 850 grams.

2. Extend the bearers to past the high point of the wing and extend the doublers back to at least ½ way along the wing chord. Do not use 1/8th ply. Use 1/16th spruce ply or even better 1/32nd spruce ply.

3. Fit the pushrod to inner hole on a Brodak 3” bellcrank and use at least 25 mm throw on the elevator horn to gear down the controls / limit elevator throw to +/- 25 degrees max, otherwise the model will be difficult to fly smoothly. The stock bellcrank mount and surrounding structure are not that strong so I suggest thicker

ribs that are covered by the sheeting and double the length of the bellcrank mounting plate.4. Fit a pushrod guide halfway

between wing TE and elevator LE to prevent flexing.

5. Ensure you use a uniflow tank. Mount it using slotted brackets so you can raise the centreline of the tank up to 6 mm above the motor centre line. Most profiles with side mounted motors need the tank raised 3 to 6 mm above the motor CL

NARACOORTE MODEL AERO CLUB

Season’s Greetings to everyone. It has been a big year for our club. First of all, our club members would like to thank everyone who attended our Annual Fun Fly despite the atrocious

weather forecast. We were unfortunate enough to pick the weekend with the worst weather in November for our annual event with winds averaging 40km and 20mm of rain falling. At least we didn’t get the hail and 100km+ winds that other parts of the state received. So again, a big thankyou to everyone who made the effort to participate in a largely social event, we appreciate the support.

We have completed 2 major projects to improve the facilities at the flying field. The club was successful in gaining a $1000 grant through Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s Community Chest Grant. This has enabled the installation of a larger rainwater tank to ensure a reliable water supply for the club, and to provide an emergency water supply available to the CFS and private fire- fighting units. We also received a grant from the MAAA club assistance scheme. This grant, along with club funds, has allowed for the installation of a solar panel system to provide power for charging, and running a water pump, hot water system and lighting system.

For Australian Model Flying Day in October, we held a static display in the Town square along with the local RFDS support group who sold merchandise and held a sausage sizzle. We also raised funds through the proceeds of that weekend’s barbeque at the field, and the sale of badges to members, which has enabled the club to make a donation to the local RFDS support group.

Earlier this year the Naracoorte Model Aero Club awarded its first ever Life Membership to Rod Stone. Club members were unanimous in the support of this nomination of Rod who was presented with a special badge and certificate at the club flying field.

Rod has been a member of Naracoorte Model Aero Club for more than four decades and has held various positions on the committee over this period of time. He has supported the hobby and encouraged many people of all ages to take up the sport.

We are currently in the process of organising a function for 2017 to celebrate 50 years since the club was formally created. If you, or someone you know are interested in being part of this celebration please contact the club.
