all using “Cresendo” models which obtained 3 maxes of 5 minutes on half engine run times of 20 seconds. The winner was Bill Britcher, 2nd was Chris Britcher, 3rd Dave Markwell. Rex Brown also obtained 3 maxes with his”Jumping Bean” model and he placed 4th.

We had to wait till Friday 20th of May to run the last two events at Willunga. Duration had 7 flyers and only Rex Brown obtained 3 x 7 minute maxes from a 15 second engine run, this being a power/glide ratio of 28/1 in the old F/F terms. The engine used by Rex was Dub Jet 40 glo running on nitro fuel with reduced compression. Chris Britcher took 2nd place with a “Playboy” with a Saito 56 ( 4 stroke) and 3rd place was Ray Bobridge with 85% Bomber and a K&B 40 loop glo from 1960, see photos.

Last event was ‘38 Antique on ½ engine engine run times. All engines were old sparkies built in the 1940’s, and these require a lot of maitenance to keep running well. The most popular spark engine is the OK Super 60, which is fairly low cost to purchase. Bill Britcher used an Atwood Triumph 49 from 1948 and he easily obtained 2x maxes of 10 minutes to tale 1st place. The 2nd place was Dave Markwell and 3rd place was Chris Britcher, all using Lanzo RC1 models, see photo. The Champ of Champs was Dave Markwell with 21 points with Chris Britcher 2nd with 20 points. Thanks to Peter Leaney and Bill Britcher for excellent lunches on the field.

CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB

SA Old Timers SA/VIC State Championships -By Don Howie

The weather recently has been very windy and at times quite wet. Monarto was unflyable

for Old Timer models on the 30th of April and 1st of May, except for early Saturday morning.

The Cox .049 Texaco event started with 5 flyers as the Victorians looked at the weather forecast and decided not to attend. Rex Brown lost his “Stardust Special” O.O.S. on the first flight and his back up model was damaged in the pits. No one obtained a 7 minute max due to the wind, the result being Dave Markwell 1st, Max Newcombe 2nd, both flying “Stardust Specials” and the writer taking 3rd with his”Cumulus”.

Next two events were held at Willunga Vintage Modellers Club on the 6th of May. Texaco had the fuel allowance reduced to half, due to height restrictions, but Dave Markwell flying a 100% Lanzo Bomber, built by the late Ron Adamson obtained 3 x 10 minute maxes to take 1st place. Chris Britcher took 2nd place with a 90% Lanzo Bomber and Max Newcombe took 3rd place with an “Inspirer” model, built by the late Max Starrick. All competitors used Japanese 4 stroke engines, except Bill Britcher who was flying an “Anderson Pylon” with a FORSTER 99 spark engine that was made from 1935 to 1955 and shown in the photos. The other event flown on the day was Gordon Burford 2.5cc diesel and the winners were

GLITCHED – AGAIN

It was a beautiful Friday morning at the field, warm with a gentle breeze. I had

my Extra 300, electric powered foamie with me that day and the conditions were ideal for some relaxed flying.

The first flight went well, some simple aerobatics, precision circuits and a greaser of a landing. A few minutes later with a fresh battery I took off again and repeated the routine. Towards the end of the flight (I limit my flights to 6 minutes to make sure the battery isn’t excessively discharged) I was flying an inverted circle. When the Extra was on the eastern side of the field I lost control; there was no response to my stick inputs and all I could do was watch it glide inverted into terra firma. Fortunately we had some rain a day or two before and terra firma was terra mollem (soft ground), so the damage was not as bad as expected. Ah well, pick up the wreckage and take it home for a post mortem.

There were two of us flying at the same time and a few seconds after my aircraft went down the other flyer (Greg Peake) experienced a radio failure in much the same location. Interestingly I had a similar loss of control a few months ago when my own design vintage aircraft went down in that same location. I strongly suspect the communications tower in the north eastern corner of the field contributed to our radio transmission failure.

The next day I took the Extra apart and assessed the damage. Is it repairable or is it a throw-away? Damage comprised:

• bent shaft on the electric motor;• shattered cowling;• tail fin fractured; and• pilot ejected from his cockpit.Yes, definitely repairable. As it happened I had a spare electric motor which fitted

the motor mount on the firewall, although it was about 20 mm shorter than the original. The original motor was rated at 950 kv with a 30 Amp ESC. The spare I fitted was rated at 1400 kv, which I thought might be a bit much for a 30 Amp ESC so

I fitted a 60 Amp unit which was also in my spares bin. Better to be safe than sorry. I didn’t want to see the Extra leaving a smoke trail through the air, no matter how impressive that would be.

The tail fin needed a few drops of glue and for good measure I strengthened it with a bamboo kebab skewer pushed inside the fin. A bit of hot glue and the pilot was secured back in his cockpit.

Now, what to do about the cowling? The shattered one was too far gone to consider any repair. Fire up the internet and check our friends at Modelflight to see if they had any spares. Yes they did, so out with the credit card and a couple of days later a brand new cowling was delivered to my door. Into the workshop to finish the repairs. As it turned out I had to do some surgery to the cowling to make it fit, bearing in mind the replacement motor was shorter which meant I had to chop off about 20 mm from the back of the cowling. The shorter motor and cowling shifted the centre of gravity back from its optimum point, so I had to add 50 grams of lead to the nose after I moved the battery as far forward as possible.

Hopefully the shorter fuselage won’t make the pitch control too sensitive. The test flight will be interesting, so I’d better be on my guard with elevator input.

The day of the test flight arrived. Freshly charged battery installed, control check, range check – all systems go. On the field and up she went. A couple of clicks on the elevator trim and she flew hands off. The new motor certainly had some oomph; at full throttle the speed was too fast, half throttle was ideal. Three more flights that day and I was happy with the results of the repair. I’m looking forward to a lot more sterling service from the Extra.

This Society is a special interest group formed by members from South Australian MAAA affiliated Clubs, who conduct member meetings, and fly regularly at numerous club fields in South Australia. Our members enjoy an understanding and kinship by sharing knowledge and experience about scale modelling. These models can have moderate to extremely detailed features. All flying scale models have requirements for structural strength, materials, engine, control, weight and balance that are no different from any other type of model aircraft. They can be powered by any engine type with the exception of pulse jets or rockets. The complexity of construction is often reflected in the choice of the full sized aircraft subject chosen, as well as the number of airframe functions such as retracts, flaps, bomb dropping, etc. These models are built with accurate scale plan form, profiles and cross sections, and finished with levels of detail chosen by the builder, which can be moderate to great. This usually depends whether the model is to be built and flown at serious “F4C” competition level or entered into “F4H standoff scale” described below, that is entirely the builder’s choice.

Scale modellers mostly fly and perfect their models at home clubs and other times in group events that are usually termed a “Fun fly”. You may have seen these listed in the MASA events calendar of the monthly newsletters. Serious competition flying occurs much less often. At clubs, a lot of aeromodellers have chosen to own one or more scale models to fly, and many are ARF as they are popular choices for lots of reasons, and they do represent history in the Civilian and Military areas. A proportion of Aeromodellers seem to regard dedicated scale modelling and competition generally as a bit of a mystery and/or “difficult”. Please let me try to clarify this.

Model aircraft competitions for keen scale modellers are conducted worldwide according to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) Document: Section 4 – Aeromodelling, Flying Scale Model Aircraft, Volume F4. A hotlink to a pdf file concerning the above is available at :- https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Federation+Aeronautique+Internationale+%28FAI%29+Document:+Section+4+%E2%80%93+Aeromodelling%2C+Flying+Scale+Model+Aircraft%2C+Volume+F4.Whilst this is a large document, there is an index and you can go straight to area that interests you. This contains the following scale model categories F4B - CONTROL LINE SCALE MODELS F4C - RADIO CONTROL SCALE MODELS F4A - FREE FLIGHT POWER SCALE MODELS (Provisional) F4D - INDOOR FREE FLIGHT SCALE MODELS RUBBER POWERED F4E - INDOOR FREE FLIGHT SCALE MODELS CO2 POWERED (Provisional) F4F - INDOOR PEANUT FREE FLIGHT SCALE MODELS (Provisional) F4G - RADIO CONTROL LARGE SCALE MODELS (Provisional) F4H - RADIO CONTROL STAND-OFF SCALE MODELS F4J - TEAM SCALE F4K - RADIO CONTROL FLYING SCALE MODEL HELICOPTERS (Provisional)

Flying manoeuvres are also in this document, specified in ANNEXE 6C – RADIO CONTROL FLIGHT – also referred to in text above. Radio control scale model flying has been the category of choice for competition in this Society for quite a while, and the flying schedules are identical in all divisions.

Scale model competitions conducted by SASOSA often have four divisions as follows:-

F4C Flying Scale The entrant must be the model builder The model is static judged at 5 metre distance for accuracy as regards scale dimensions,

finish and detailing Documentation is required to justify the above details. Flying judged according to ANNEXE 6C

F4H Standoff Scale Model accuracy and finishes are judged to a less stringent degree compared to F4C Reduced documentation requirements Model builder can be any person, but entrant must have applied the finish and markings. Flying judged according to ANNEXE 6C

F4G Large Scale Static judging is the same as for F4C with additional details regarding mass of model Flying judged according to ANNEXE 6C

Flying Only No model static judging Flying judged according to ANNEXE 6C

You may be surprised to learn that every MAAA member is eligible to compete in any State or National Scale championship category according to the FAI rules above. Are you one of the many capable model pilots throughout clubs who already fly a lot of different manoeuvres? You could easily learn to become competitive in a “flying only” competition within the Annexe 6C flying schedule. That schedule in broad terms would most likely be a relatively “lower order challenge” for you. That’s because there is little that’s likely to be much more demanding, or radically different from manoeuvres that you probably fly at your home field. You can even use an ARF model in this category.

In closing, why not lookup the MASA Newsletter when and where the next SASOSA fun fly is scheduled, and go along as a visitor. You can meet and talk to the host club and Scale Society members, and see what we fly, and how. All are happy to talk about their models and the “vibes” that go with them, and you will see that there is definitely choice in degrees of scale complexity that you can choose to “do battle” with. Perhaps you could read up on the Volume 4 scale modelling referred to above – available on the internet. This will give you an insight to scale requirements and the flying rules. There are mandatory and optional flying maneuvers, the choices often being those that are limited by the abilities of the prototype aircraft. Possibly the “Flying only” aspects may push your buttons. Descriptions how to carry out every manoeuvre are there as a guide, and you could even teach yourself! If your interest has been stirred a bit by the above, you would be most welcome to attend one of our bi-monthly member meetings at Parafield. Details may be obtained by contacting our Secretary Trevor Woolfitt on 0402 815 957, or by Email:- [email protected]

All the best, I hope that these words have helped some of scale modelling to become less of an unknown for you and maybe arouse further interest.

BUSINESS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES

MASA Website. The treasurer reported that the new site development has been completed and the new page will replace the old one in June 2016. Clubs are reminded that the new MASA website has space available to accommodate smaller clubs without a website to publish their individual newsletters and calendar events.

MASA/Club Banners. The concept of joint MASA/Club promotional banners attracted interest from member clubs around the state. Clubs are forwarding their logos back in various different formats which is not ideal to relay onto the supplier. If clubs could review and ensure their logos are sent as a jpeg file that would assist greatly and allow the ordering to progress.

ORS SA Grants. As no response has been received to date from Sport SA, the secretary will again correspond with them to ascertain any progress. As previously stated if Sport SA are unable to assist MASA as per their charter with our issue of aeromodelling in SA being recognised as a sport (as is current with all other states), then renewal of membership with Sport SA will be difficult to justify.
