WENs Monthly Non-Profit Spotlight: Greenbelt AllianceEach month, WEN spotlights one Bay Area environmental non-profit organization. Nominateyour organization for upcoming Non-Profit Spotlights by emailing [email protected].

What is the non-profit organizations mission?Greenbelt Alliance protects open spaces by helping cities and counties adopt policies to preparefor future growth while preserving the greenbelt. They create vibrant places through theirendorsement of development projects within existing cities that provide homes for people of allincome levels within walkable distance to shops, jobs and transit, forming walkableneighborhoods. Greenbelt Alliance also works to get people involved by educating andmobilizing local residents to give them a voice in choosing how their communities grow.

What is the history of the organization? In 1958, Dorothy Erskine, Jack Kent and colleagues founded Citizens for Regional Recreationand Parks (CRRP), an organization of environmentally concerned individuals and groups thatwould later become Greenbelt Alliance. For 50 years, Greenbelt Alliance has worked with localcommunities and partner groups to help secure long-term protection for more than 1.1 millionacres of open space, and establish urban growth boundaries around 26 cities and five counties.Noteworthy places they have helped to protect include Cowell Ranch in Contra Costa County(2002), Bear Creek Redwoods in Santa Clara County (2000), Pleasanton Ridge in AlamedaCounty (1993), and Fort Funston in San Francisco (1961). Greenbelt Alliance was also part ofthe efforts to protect the Marin Headlands and Angel Island.

What is the current top priority for the Greenbelt Alliance East Bay Field office?

The Concord Naval Weapons Station, located directly adjacent to the threatened Pittsburg hills,is one of the largest remaining developable areas in the entire Bay Area region. The ConcordNaval Weapons Station project serves as a rare opportunity to create positive development whilealso protecting key habitat, creating a model for a vibrant walkable community adjacent toprotected open space. The final plan governing the type and intensity of development and theamount of park land will be determined in early 2009.

One unknown fact about Greenbelt Alliance:71% of the staff are amazing talented women!

Forum: Water Wars: Bottled vs. Tap: Monday, September 15, 2008$6 a gallon. That's not the cost of gas, but the cost per gallon when you buy a 20 oz bottled waterat the store. Last year alone, Americans chugged 8 billion gallons of bottled water and thatnumber continues to rise. We're constantly inundated with hundreds of water choices: artesianwater from Fiji, vapor distilled with added electrolytes, spring water from the top of Mt. Shasta,carbon-neutral mineral water from Scotland, and of course good ol' tap water. So which is bestfor me? We'll examine the safety, health, environmental, and personal factors that go into thatchoice so we can finally answer: Is bottled water better than tap? Film: The 11th Hour: September 17, 2008Drought. Famine. Severe flooding. Record rainfall. Hurricanes. Acid rain. The highest averagetemperatures in recorded history. Catastrophe is reported on the nightly news as isolatedincidents. But are these incidents isolated, or pieces of a larger global puzzle that could unlockhumanity's future? In the history of the planet, humanity's time on earth has been short butpowerful. The human drive to ensure its own survival and quality of life has revolutionizedindustry, science, nutrition, and medicine. But it has also affected the delicate balance that makeslife on Earth possible. Shaped by oceans and rainforests that generate oxygen, absorb carbondioxide, govern climate, weather and temperature, the Earth is under siege. The alchemy ofnatural greenhouse gases that enables life has been inundated with chemicals from tail pipes andsmoke stacks. For every truckload of product produced, many more truckloads of waste arecreated. The oceans have been flooded with mercury, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals. Theforests are disappearing, deserts are widening, the arctic sea ice is melting, the permafrost hasbegun to crack. The Earth has grown warmer. Not since a meteor hit the planet 55 million yearsago have so many forms of life gone. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, this documentary exploresthe perilous state of our planet, and the means by which we can change our course. Contributingto this film are noted politicians, scientists, and other ambassadors for the importance of auniversal ecological consciousness.
