The Awards recognize individuals and organizations whose leadership has made a significant impact in their particular Bay Area communities. This work may confront societal or civic issues, address health or environmental concerns, or promote arts and humanities. One of the four Awards distinguishes an under-recognized, mature artist who has made a significant and ongoing contribution in the Bay Area. Each year their peers nominate outstanding individuals and groups, and a panel of Bay Area community leaders selects the Award winners. Individuals receive $10,000 awards and organizations are awarded $20,000. The deadline for nominations is Monday, March 3, 2008. For more information about the online nomination process and to access the online nomination form, please visit www.sff.org/cla or contact Talya Gould at 415.733.8555 or [email protected]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ USEPA Environmental Awards Program Call for Nominations The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is encouraging citizens in California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands to nominate a friend, peer or organization for this year's U.S. EPA Environmental Awards program. The program, now in its tenth year, seeks to recognize individuals and groups outside of the U.S. EPA who made significant contributions to improve the environment in the year 2007. Anyone can be nominated, such as scientists, teachers, journalists, citizen activists, young people, organizations, business representatives, public officials and others committed to protecting public health and preserving our natural surroundings. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

- promotion of innovative ideas, techniques, and/or technologies - ability to address an environmental problem or need - accomplishment of stated goals - ability of the program/activity to be replicated or widely shared

Rebuilding with Straw Bale in Earthquake Affected Pakistan: Thursday, February 21, 2008 Berkeley architect Martin Hammer recently returned from Pakistan where he has been working to bring straw bale and other sustainable building practices to the mountainous region devastated by the 2005 earthquake, which was responsible for over 80,000 deaths, and left millions without permanent shelter. He'll give us an update on the work he presented last year, as well as provide details about straw bale construction. Straw bale construction is earthquake resistant, energy and resource efficient, and an affordable solution to northern Pakistan's enormous reconstruction needs. Martin Hammer has been involved with the design, engineering, and construction of straw bale buildings since 1995, and is the lead author of the proposed straw bale building code for the State of California. In 2006 he co-founded Pakistan Straw Bale and Appropriate Building (http://www.paksbab.org ). Come join us for this informative talk and slideshow. Todd, the director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute, will also discuss how transportation emission reduction strategies can be evaluated in a way that fully captures their economic, social, and environmental benefits. Meeting will be held at 312 Sutter Street (at Grant), home of SPUR (San Francisco Planning + Urban Research), the event co-sponsor. This event will provide information on water-conserving strategies for building and landscape applications through presentations and exhibitor displays. Many experts believe that water will surpass energy as the resource of greatest concern to Californians in the coming years. We live in a state with a growing population, limited water reserves, and unpredictable rainfall. Water use also has significant energy implications. The California State Water Project that is responsible for moving water from sources to customers is the single largest user of energy in the state. Additional energy is required to heat, cool, pump and treat water. Reducing water use through conservation can extend our limited supply of this resource and produce significant electricity and natural gas savings. The showcase will include lectures by experts from state and local governments, water districts, research institutions and engineering firms. These talks will address recent research, new water policies, technological developments, and case studies for
