NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM by Alan Rosen, Harris County Constable, Precinct 1

With summer coming to an end, and children returning to school, our neighborhoods will be a little quieter. It is important to remember no neighborhood is completely immune to crime. Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct One, would like to encourage all citizens to join your local neighborhood watch program. Several citizens in your area have been working hard to establish a strong and effective program. The Constable’s Office will provide the necessary training for the Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch is a program in which local residents in their neighborhoods create an organizational structure and work together to improve and maintain the security and safety in their local community. Constable Alan Rosen and Deputies with Harris County Precinct One will be meeting with residents to educate them of ways to better secure your homes. All citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the police immediately. Deputies will take the time to meet with these groups to ensure everyone understands what activities may be suspicious. For more information on your local Neighborhood Watch Program, please contact Karen Spearman, at 281-783-6769 or [email protected].

SECURITY UPDATE by Janet Maxian

Our neighborhood and those surrounding ours are all experiencing burglaries to residences. This is what is known or theorized about these:

There is no discernible pattern to how the burglars choose the houses they burglarize. Some are on corners, some are not, some have acti-vated alarms, some do not.

Most burglaries have occurred on weekdays between 9 am and 3pm through the rear of the house.

The burglars have been targeting cash, jewelry, and guns. The burglars are defeating alarms that only have contacts on

doors/windows. The door or window must be opened to break the con-tact and set off the alarm. Instead of opening the door or window, they are breaking the glass to enter and to exit. If you do have an alarm system, make sure it will recognize glass breakage. Residents are en-couraged to have alarm systems even though the presence of an alarm does not seem to be deterring burglars from entering the house. The sounding of an alarm means they cannot stay in the house for long, which means less time to search and grab. An alarm also gets the po-lice there faster, increasing the chances of apprehending the suspects.

Surveillance cameras in and around the home also serve as deterrents. The burglars seem to be heading to the master bedroom first to look for

jewelry, guns, and money. It is recommended that valuables be hidden anyplace other than this location.

We are encouraged to: ALWAYS activate our alarm system when we are at home and when

we leave the house. Surveillance cameras in and around the home also serve as deterrents.

ALWAYS answer the door when someone knocks or rings the bell – but never open the door to strangers.

If you are home when someone is trying to break into your home, move around, shout, and make a lot of noise to let them know that someone is inside. Call 911 immediately!

If you arrive home to find it has been burglarized, do not enter your home until police have checked to ensure that the burglars are not still inside.

Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Do not allow use of your cell phone to interfere with this.

Call our local Law Enforcement Agency to report anything or anyone suspicious.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS? by Karen Spearman

How well do you know your neighbors? The 8400 block of Braes got to be a pretty tight-knit group after Hurricane Ike but even our five houses have experienced a number of changes since then and it was not enough to prevent a recent minor break in. The Constable Patrol responded quickly and efficiently but the reality is that the best solution is prevention, something best provided by staying in touch with the folks around you and recognizing when something is out of place. Harris County Constable’s Precinct 1 recently proposed launching a Neighborhood Watch Program in addition to our patrols. These officers are a great benefit and having an active and engaged community partnered with law enforcement would tremendously enhance their role in deterring criminal activity. The program is organized by residents to build a network of watch captains that collect contact information for each household and communicate within their block in the event of an emergency. Residents assist each other by staying in touch, being aware of suspicious activity and reporting that to authorities. Our law enforcement liaisons participate through training programs and assisting residents to better identify potential problems. These programs have a proven record of success, providing benefits such as:

Reducing crime Improving quality of life Creating a greater sense of security, responsibility, and personal control Building community pride and unity Preparing for helping others and ourselves in our community Becoming the extra “eyes and ears” of law enforcement personnel

The safety and security of our community is something that lies in our hands. It should not be outsourced. That is best served by each of us becoming involved. If you would be interested in receiving more information or acting as a Watch Captain for your area, please get in touch with Karen Spearman, 281-783-6769 or email [email protected].

You Are Invited to Leadership Day at Longfellow Elementary with special guest SEAN COVEY!

Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People self-help classic has been refined and reimagined to help young people cultivate a sense of personal responsibility and leadership skills, and the result is “The Leader in Me”. With the collaboration of the PTA, the “Leader in Me” is now in place in Longfellow Elementary. “ ‘The Leader in Me’ provides the most solid foundation I have ever seen to help kids lead a principled, centered life,” said Longfellow Principal Norma Perez-Gwynn. “It has made an incredible difference with our children. The process challenges students to live by seven basic tenets that encourage personal responsibility and an appreciation of others, such as “Begin with the end in mind,” and “Think Win-Win.” Ms. Perez-Gwynn noted that in addition to an increased sense of camaraderie on our campus, Longfellow students have seen “significant gains” in academic areas since the school implemented the process two years ago. Please join us at Longfellow's next Leadership Day on Wednesday October 8, 1- 5:30pm! You will have the opportunity to visit different classrooms and experience the Seven Habits and academic instruction in action. Longfellow also offers a fabulous Fine Arts Magnet Program, which includes Music, Art, Dance, Band and Orchestra. We are excited to announce that SEAN COVEY (son of author Stephen Covey and author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Seven Habits of Happy Kids and more) will be on campus as well doing a book signing from 4 - 5:30 pm. Community members are welcome and encouraged to attend! **Also save the date for the Longfellow Fall Carnival Saturday October 25, 10 am-2 pm—Food, Games and Fun—Community Families Welcome!*

BRAESWOOD PLACE GARDEN CLUB by Janet Maxian and Kathy Jenkins

Please mark your calendar for September 15 at 7 pm. Sharon Plummer will host our September Braeswood Place Gar-den Club meeting. She will talk to us about drip irrigation and give us a demonstration. This will be a great start to our new year! Sharon’s address is 3727 Glen Haven. Please call Kathy Jenkins (713-661-9939) or Janet Maxian (713-668-4645) for further information.

GARDEN OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

Garden of the month for September is located at 3706 Grennoch; the home of Tom and Kathy Wadley. The homeowner, who works for a local builder, could probably have access to great landscaping service but he chooses to do his own gar-dening. He designed, planted, and cares for the garden himself. He explained that because his lot was comparatively small, he wanted to create interest with color and design. He has achieved this in abundance, as there are always very colorful seasonal blooms to catch your eye. Presently, large clusters of vibrant vinca grab attention at the entrance to the property; interesting plantings in large pots atop short columns flank the steps at street level, and a tiered hedge of box-wood, pink ruffle azaleas, and beautiful caladiums line the sidewalk to the front steps. Fig ivy and floral plantings circle the two live oak trees and two large pink blossom camellias anchor each corner of the house. Flagstones which match the natural stone of the house soften the welcome path from the drive to the front door. As we begin a new year for the BPHA Garden Club, I would encourage you to keep us posted about your neighbor's gar-dens as we all strive to keep our neighborhood attractive and welcoming.

WHAT IF YOU FIND AN INJURED BIRD? by Lynn Tauber

I recently found an injured young bird one morning on my walk (this has happened a number of times in the past two years). I took the bird to The Wildlife Center of Texas, 7007 Katy Road. They do amazing work and are legitimate: www.wildlifecenteroftexas.org. While there, I asked about rescue companies for raccoon/possum/ wildlife rescue companies. We had a bad experience with one this summer and ended up having to spend a lot of time and money. The ONLY true humane rescue that was recommended was 911 Wildlife: www.911wildlife.com, 713- 287-1911. Their website has great information and confirms what I was told by the Wildlife Center of Texas (also an amazing website)! I wanted to share this with our neighborhood as I have seen so much more destruction of habitat as new homes are being built. I am sure there are others who would like to have this info. EDITOR’S NOTE: My younger son and I took some baby Robins who had fallen out of their nest to the Wildlife Center this summer. They were well taken care of and we even received an email update on their condition. Highly recommend this place! It is right next to the SPCA and they accept all creatures!

2007 Recipient of Mayoral Honorable Mention Award, Keep Houston Beautiful

Take a trip anywhere these days and you will likely see some of the same restaurant and store names that you see around your home. Franchises are one of the most popular and successful forms of business going.

Owning a franchise offers a way to become an entrepreneur without all the risks that come with starting a business from scratch. Opportunities are more varied than you may realize and can fit many different investors’ needs. What most have in common is an upfront fee and some type of ongoing financial arrangement in exchange for the use of the parent company’s name and business model, which should have a track record of success. Big success can come when you have set up one successful franchise and follow up with more locations to multiply your returns.

You might want to consider investing in a franchise if: You’re frustrated with a corporate job and looking for a different career. You’re looking for a high-yield investment with cash flow at a time when interest rates are low. You’re nearing or in retirement and want to re-focus your accrued business acumen into a new venture that’s

interesting and stimulating. You want an investment not linked to traditional markets such as stocks and bonds. There are opportunities to

invest passively in franchises, where you supply money but not your time.

If you would like to explore whether such an investment is right for you, please contact PARTNERSINWEALTH President (and Braeswood Place homeowner) Jim Waters, CFP®, at 713.964.4028 or [email protected].
