7th September 2017 - Issue 18 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE YEAR 5/6 CAMP Yesterday, I spent the day visiting our Year 5/6 students and teachers at Camp Weekaway in Benloch. They were actively involved in hut making all morning, carting and carrying branches, sticks, foliage and bark pieces to secure a shelter in the bush. The test came once finished, when the group sheltered in their hut and teachers tipped water over the roof to check for weather proofing. All huts were well constructed, however, not waterproof. Just as well they had rain jackets on and warm camp fires nearby. After the hut building exercise, the group cooked their own lunch: BBQ sausages in bread and home-made damper with jam. This was a most enjoyable activity spent on the creek bed beside the warm fires that had been prepared in the morning. Once all were well fed, the group retired back to camp for a break before heading outside to play a survival game. The children are having a terrific time, enjoying the socialisation, team work, the amazing activities from flying fox, canoeing, mountain bike riding, finding their way in and out of the maze and hut building. The weather is fresh, with it snowing at the campsite on Monday, which was really exciting to witness. All children are warmly dressed for the cooler weather and with the activities each day, are running around and participating in full. The campers are due home around 3pm on Friday and I predict all will sleep very well after their big week of fresh air and exercise. All have healthy appetites and are being well cared for by the camp and teaching staff. Enjoy the photos with this newsletter. YR 3/4 CAMP OASIS NEXT WEEK: WEDNESDAY 13FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER Im sure the Yr 3/4 children will be starting to get excited about attending their camp next week, from Wednesday to Friday at Camp Oasis. It will be a wonderful experience for all to spend time away from home, being challenged by some of the activities and socialising with their peers. I look forward to visiting the group mid week while the children are on camp. Thank you to all our Yr 3-6 teachers, camp staff and parent attendees, for the wonderful camp memories for our children over the next 2 weeks. BUNNINGS BBQ– SUNDAY 17 SEPTEMBER Next Sunday 17 September our school will be hosting our annual sausage sizzle at Bunnings Frankston. Sincere thanks to all parents who will be assisting on the day. If you are in the vicinity, please call in and buy a sausage to help with our local fundraising efforts. Have a wonderful weekend. A message from the

Assistant Principal.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE ON A SUCCESSFUL TRIVIA NIGHT!

A BIG thank you to everyone who came to our Trivia Night. We raised just over $6000. This will go towards our bike shed and new play ground equipment. STRATEGIES TO ENCOURGE GROWTH MINDSET

IN YOUR CHILDREN. GROWTH MINDSET PRAISE

TYPE 1: EFFORT PRAISE– embracing challenges with hard work and effort is a hallmark of a growth mindset. When children are praised for effort, it is likely that they will learn a key life lesson that almost everything worth having in life comes from hard work. TYPE 2: STRATEGY PRAISE- allows us to combine the “feel good” quality of praise with the specificity that adds value to feedback. In strategy praise, we point out to the child that using particular skills and prior knowledge go a long way toward meeting success. Type 3: PERSISTANCE PRAISE– when we praise children for pushing through the frustration, we help them to recognise that sometimes tasks require us to put forth effort over a long period of time. Helping children to understand that the struggles we experience when we are learning new and challenging things are normal and are actually a sign of our neural connections in our brain strengthening. This is a powerful way to transform their attitude and their perspective. Don’t forget our school values: RESPECT, RESILIENCE and RESPONSIBILTY. We encourage you to use this language at home to reinforce these values in everyday life at home, at school and in the community. Building RESPECTFUL RELATONSHIPS. Enjoy your weekend! Junior Homestead

The fabulous student’s of the Junior Homestead have been working hard this term researching two inquiry topics,

‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ and ‘Claws, Paws and all Fours!’ Students are currently creating and developing their new

species’ of Australian animals. They are having a blast! In Numeracy, students have been working hard on their

addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills and are now learning about fractions and transformations in the

real world!

In Literacy, we have seen some extraordinary writing pieces informing readers about things the Juniors are experts at. Students are currently working on procedural writing and

have written pieces such as ‘How to make Fairy Bread’ and ‘How to make Oobleck.’

We are all so proud of the work each and every student has

been doing. Keep it up 1/2's!

WRITING AT FRANKSTON HEIGHTS PS

Students at Frankston Heights Primary love to write! To encourage students to keep up their incredible writing, we have introduced ’The Writing Box’.

Each fortnight students can submit their incredible writing pieces to the box in the office. Three pieces will be chosen and published in our fortnightly newsletter.

Here are the first three!
