An Extended Public Works Program that wassupposed to have been started on 1 December2014 and end on 31 July 2015, which was aimedto benefit 65 individuals and numerous fami-lies around Elias Motsoaledi Local Munici-

Oppositions react after EPWP project cancelledpality, has now been cancelled. According toElias Motsoaledi Ward 10 Councillor SeunMogotji, the cancellation of the project leftpoor community members, who were supposedto benefit from it, destitute, disillusioned and

disappointed. Mogotji added that the EliasMotsoaledi Local Municipality was given abudget to run the project but the council de-cided to stop the project without valid reasonsraised. “The grant was allocated to the EliasMotsoaledi Local Municipality Council, but forsome obscure and unknown reasons, the projectwas cancelled. The council seems to be developing a tendencyof not using grants that have to be spent todevelop the community and alleviate povertyin the communities,” he said.Mogotji added that unemployed communitymembers were appointed for the project andthey were notified last minute that the projectwill no longer continue. “As the official oppo-sition in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality,we consider it as our duty to challenge thecouncil on this matter. We have also engaged

with the Lawyers for Human Rights in thematter. We believe that this is a breach ofcontract between the municipality and the 65beneficiaries who were appointed for theproject,” he said. Mogotji said that these poorcommunity members used their last cash tocompile relevant documents and travel to thecouncil for interviews and also measured fortheir uniform sizes in the municipality but theywere turned away when told that the project hasbeen stopped. “This is regarded as fruitlessexpenditure spent by the municipality as theproject was never implemented. There are nospecific answers regarding the matter now wewant someone to account for the decision,” hesaid. He said, as oppositions, they want thematter to be resolved immediately and if themunicipality fails, they will seek for further legalassistance.

The Sekhukhune Office Relocation Movement (SORM) organized a march leading to LebowakgomoLegislature Offices on Wednesday 10 December. The Coordinator of the Sekhukhune OfficeRelocation Movement, Simon Mahlangu, said the march that saw hundreds of Sekhukhuneresidents aimed to address neglected issues of the concerned Sekhukhune residents. Taxiassociations within Sekhukhune area joined the protest and hundreds of taxis were deployed totransport community members to the march. He said their main concern is relocating theSekhukhune Offices from Lebowakgomo to Jane Furse. “I wonder why our district (SekhukhuneDistrict Municipality) has offices within the Capricorn District Municipality. It is clear that we areneglected by government officials. In all five district municipalities in Limpopo Province,Sekhukhune is the only district that has some of its offices in other district municipality. If theyfail to relocate the offices, we will form an organization that will fight for us in the coming 2016 localgovernment elections so that our voice could be heard,” he said. He added that amongst otherissues included in the memorandum, is that tenders must be given to local entrepreneurs. He saidthey also mentioned that Sekhukhune Hospitals are understaffed due to nepotism in theDepartment of Health. “The Department appoints people from outside the Sekhukhune area. Theydon’t serve long and apply to be transferred to their areas. This results in a backlog and leads tohospitals always experiencing a shortage of staff,” said Simon. He hinted that tenders must alsobe prioritized to benefit locals. He said most of the government programmes in Sekhukhune aregiven to family and friends of those who occupied top positions within the departments.
