SCORM and Adobe Presenter
1. Introduction
For the eLearning platform, it is necessary that one should try to create the contents in a
very interactive and interesting manner. The user will not get distracted while browsing the
lessons in the eLearning platform. The user is free to browse a text book/ reference book
manner or chapter by chapter using the slide show views. But in these types of different
options, user will find sometimes the lack of interactivity and distraction. To provide the
interactive presentations, there are some standard guidelines that will help the course
creator in preparing the interactive contents.
SCORM stands for “Sharable Content Object Reference Model”. Sharable Content Object
indicates that SCORM is all about creating units of online training material that can be
shared across different systems. SCORM defines how to create sharable content objects or
SCO’s that can be reused in different systems and contexts.
Reference Model reflects the fact that SCORM is not actually a standard. SCORM simply
references these existing standards and tells developers how to properly use them together.
Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) (Ref. in http://www.scorm.com/) is a
collection of standards and specifications for web-based eLearning. It defines
communications between client side content and a host system called the run-time
environment, which is commonly supported by a learning management system. SCORM
also defines how content may be packaged into a transferable ZIP file which it calls its
"Package Interchange Format".
SCORM governs how online learning content and LMS communicate with each other.
SCORM does not speak to instructional design or any other pedagogical concern, it is
purely a technical standard. SCORM allows the eLearning software to “play well” with
products from other vendors.
2. Adobe Presenter
Adobe Presenter, a plug-in from Adobe for Microsoft Power Point enables the content
creator to transform Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into rich experiences complete
with voice-over narration and multimedia content, including video, animations, and
product simulations. Even non technical users can create compelling content without ever
leaving the PowerPoint authoring environment. Presenter converts the presentation to the
Adobe Flash® format and publishes it online for your audience to view at their
convenience.
Anyone who needs to communicate with or train people online should use Presenter. This
typically includes specialized training for lecturers / trainers/ policy makers/ other senior
level persons and any other user who are even not a computer friendly.
Presenter offers adaptive streaming audio and video and intelligently preloads presentation
content for a great viewing experience. It also supports streaming "talking head" video,
which enables authors to import pre-recorded FLV files to increase the impact of adobe
presenter presentations and self paced training.

The Presenter content viewer can be fully customized and provides total control over
colours and logos to match with industry standards. Organization’s colour, logo, and
presentation viewer layout settings can be saved as a theme and shared to help ensure
consistency across all presentations.
The presenter also provide quiz and survey authoring. Subject matter experts can easily
add quiz and survey questions to presentations to test understanding and assist in
knowledge retention. Presenter provides all major question interaction formats: multiple
choice/multiple answer, true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, short answer/essay, and
rating scale.
3. Creating a SCORM manifest file
If you want to package a Presenter presentation as an elearning course that can be
administered and launched from a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 compliant learning management
system, you may need a manifest file.
The SCORM package can be published using the publish option of the Add-In ribbon, a
manifest file is automatically created named breeze-manifest.xml.
The manifest file that Presenter creates is named imsmanifest.xml and contains references
to all content resources. The XML file uses predefined XML tags to describe the package
components, structure, and special behaviors. The file works behind the scenes to properly
integrate presentations with your learning management system and track quiz data.
In PowerPoint, open a presentation (PPT or PPTX file).
Select Adobe Presenter > Quiz Manager. (PowerPoint 2007 users select Adobe
presenter > Manage Quiz.)
Click the Reporting tab.
Select Enable Reporting For This Presentation.
Under Learning Management System (LMS), select SCORM.
Click Manifest.
Set the SCORM Version by selecting 1.2 or 2004 from the pop-up menu.
Set the following manifest options:
Identifier (Required): The LMS uses the identifier to identify different
manifests. A default identifier based on the name of your Presenter
presentation is automatically added to this text box. You can change the
identifier at any time by selecting the text and typing in new text.
Title (Required): Students using the LMS can see the title. You can change
the title at any time by selecting the text and typing in new text.
Description (Required): Text used by the LMS to describe different courses
to users. You can edit the description at any time.
Version (Optional): The version specifies a number that can be used to
differentiate manifests with the same identifier.

Duration (Optional): Select this option to specify the approximate time it
takes to work with this particular Presenter presentation. Set the time in the
following format: hh:mm:ss.
Subject (Optional): Select this option to write a short description of the
Presenter presentation using keywords or phrases.
SCO Identifier (Required): The LMS uses the identifier to identify
different shareable content objects (SCO). You can change the identifier at
any time by selecting the text and typing in new text. (If you type the name
of a new identifier, do not use any spaces in the name.)
Title (Required): A title for the SCO. You can change the title at any time
by selecting the text and typing in new text.
Mastery Score (Optional): Select this option to specify a passing score for
the Presenter presentation. Specify a number from 0 through 100. Only
Presenter presentations containing score-reporting objects, such as quiz
slides, text entry boxes, click boxes, or buttons, require a mastery score.
Time Allowed (Optional): Select this option to specify the maximum
amount of time allowed to complete the Presenter presentation.
Time Limit Action (Optional): Select this option to specify the action to be
taken when the maximum time allowed to complete the presentation has
been exceeded. From the pop-up menu, select one of the four options: Exit
With Message, Exit Without Message, Continue With Message, or Continue
Without Message.
Launch Data (Optional): Select this option to specify initialization data
expected by the resource.
Click OK.
To see the manifest file, publish your Presenter presentation locally to create a
Shockwave Flash (SWF) file and a manifest file. If you used the default save location,
you can use Windows Explorer to navigate to the SWF file and imsmanifest.xml file in
My Documents\My Presentations\ Name of Presentation folder. If you published the
presentation to a different folder, navigate to that location to see the manifest file.
4. Steps required in creation of SCORM package
Following steps are required to create a SCORM package:
Open the power point presentation
Click on Add-In ribbon as in fig. 1.
Create a new theme or use already existing theme as in fig. 2.
Create or add the presenter information/preferences as in fig. 3.
Create the individual or group of slide properties as in fig. 4

Select the “Record Audio” from the Adobe Presenter to record the audio as in fig.
5.
Edit the audio using Audio Editor feature as in fig. 6.
Audio editing was completed, save the presentation and then published it as in fig.

5. Upload the package into Moodle
The SCORM module in Moodle enables users to upload the lesson as a SCORM module.
1. Login to moodle, run a Moodle course in Edit mode.

2. Select "Add an Activity", and select "SCORM/AICC" from the drop-down list. As
in fig. 8.
3. Select the required zip file from the published folder and upload it to Moodle as in
fig. 9 and fig. 10.
4. Once uploaded, a student can browse the presentation by just clicking on the
SCORM package link from the particular chapter of the lesson.
This type of multimedia enabled presentation can create interest for the subject among
the students. This will also take less time to study a topic.

6. Conclusion
SCORM will be useful in transferring the package from one platform to another platform.
The package once created, can be used anywhere. The Adobe presenter can be one of the
tool by which we can easily create multimedia enabled presentation as an SCORM
module. The audio facility is one of the best feature in the module. The audio script can
also be edited. Once the module is ready, it can be uploaded to any elearning portal
deployed on any platform. SCORM is platform independent.
