Open Access – some facts

• 1995-2011: Open Access - an international movement• 2008-2011: CGIAR and FAO collaborate in AAA initiative (Availability,

Accessibility, Applicability)• 2009: CIAT Director General launches Open Access initiative• 2010: CIAT Open Access Policy available on the web (open access

as a component of individual Performance Evaluations) • Donors – increasingly ask for it (e.g. DFID, European Union)

Open Access – CIAT facts

Articles• Peer-reviewed journal articles: increased from 40% to 60% of CIAT total publications from 2006 to 2010 • 15% accessible full text to everyone (via web)• 40% accessible full text to CIAT staff (via VPN)• 80% full-text potentially accessible through self-archiving of

revised and approved manuscriptsAll publications• 20% of 14,000 documents authored by CIAT (1968-2010) link to

full-texts• Special efforts underway to add full texts wherever possible

(Google Books, adding links after embargo expires, obtaining permissions, etc.)

Open Access – issues to keep in mind

Which publisher, which journal?• >25,000 journals; 6,500 open access (DOAJ); 2.5 million articles/yr• Many book publishers• Researchers choose most desirable option – we can adviseHow to retain open access rights?• 80% of journals allow self-archiving (web posting of revised and

approved manuscripts)• Carefully read copyright transfer agreement before signing• Confusing terminology (on purpose) • Retain parts of your copyright (“Science Common”)• Provide revised and approved manuscripts to the library

Open Access – make our results more visible

• Let us know when a new journal article, a book, a report is about to be published

• We can help to advertise via – Social Media (Blogs, Slideshare, Flickr, Twitter, BlibTV, YouTube)– E-Newsletter

• We make CIAT books accessible via Google Books • CIAT’s Library Repository (to be harvested by external services) • Photo stories, multimedia, video clips and participatory videos• Newspapers and television• Translations (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Thai, others)
