• 1995-2011: Open Access - an international movement• 2008-2011: CGIAR and FAO collaborate in AAA initiative (Availability,

Accessibility, Applicability)• 2009: CIAT Director General launches Open Access initiative• 2010: CIAT Open Access Policy available on the web (open access

as a component of individual Performance Evaluations) • Donors – increasingly ask for it (e.g. DFID, European Union)

Articles• Peer-reviewed journal articles: increased from 40% to 60% of CIAT total publications from 2006 to 2010 • 15% accessible full text to everyone (via web)• 40% accessible full text to CIAT staff (via VPN)• 80% full-text potentially accessible through self-archiving of

revised and approved manuscriptsAll publications• 20% of 14,000 documents authored by CIAT (1968-2010) link to

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

• VPN is now completely web-based, resources are accessibly anywhere, anytime without install additional software https://vpn.ciat.cgiar.org/

• Should you have problems with accessing resources such as e-journals, e-books please let us know immediately (Idris with copy to me)

• For other access problems with commercial applications (SAS, Oracle) inform the helpdesk

• Helpdesk also provides training for institutional applications, remote installations, configuration, updates and bug fixing.

• Many problems can be fixed by directly logging into your computer


Web Conferencing - WebEx

• Allows up to 24 participants to share: • audio/video/chat • Documents• Applications

• Poor connectivity areas can use it as well


Other Audio/Video Conferencing

• For formal video conferencing, where quality is a must, CIAT and ICRAF both use professional Polycom equipment

• For non-formal video/audio conferencing users have many options, such as Skype, however they all have their limitations

• WebEx can provide the best of both worlds


Other Services

• Virtual workspaces via MS SharePoint– Share documents, use chats, blogs, wikis, forums,

within projects• E-seminars via video streaming

– Transmission via internet for staff and partners in the Regions and partners


Microsoft IT Academy

• CIAT’s Campus Agreement with Microsoft, allows participation in the Microsoft IT Academy Program for all HQ and regional staff

• Users may access courses anytime, anywhere, and obtain officially Microsoft certification

• Users must have a hotmail or windows live account and send a request to the Human Resources ([email protected]) with copy to [email protected] and [email protected].

ESRI products now accessible to all CGIAR staff at
