Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Dear Parents/carers, Hope your week began well. Let’s hope our weather is improving as we move towards the end of term and holiday period. FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS FOR 2018 A specific reminder to all Glenroy West Primary School families if you have a younger child to begin Foundation in 2018 and you have not enrolled them please take action regarding this at your earliest convenience. STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLBEING Parents routinely provide information to the school about why their child/children are absent. When your child is away due to ill health, it is important to note that it is not mandatory that you provide details of the illness. In most cases ill health will be the reason given by parents and, the reason recorded by the school. If however your child is suffering from a condition that has been medically diagnosed as being contagious the circumstances change. Parents must inform the school by communicating with admin staff or members of the leadership team. In addition to this, if as a parent you feel that from the symptoms presenting the condition may be contagious then it is also important to provide such information to the school. Some illnesses are classified as reportable infectious diseases. Any reports of other infectious diseases such as gastroenteritis from a parent will seek advice being given in line with the ‘minimum period of exclusion from primary schools for infectious diseases statutory rule’. SCHOOL PROCEDURE Whilst children are at school staff work hard to ensure that all children receive ongoing messages relating to sound hygiene practice. This includes modelling of the correct way to wash hands and the use of soap and hand drying. In working to ensure a safe environment for all, I request all parents to

Keep children at home from school in line with medical directions if condition is

contagious

Tell the school if your child has been diagnosed with a contagious condition

Actively teach your children how to wash hands thoroughly and monitor this from

an early age

Ensure all children’s finger nails are clean and regularly trimmed

The following link will take you to the world Health organisation and a video on how to wash hands hygienically http://www.whoint/gpsc/5may/hand hygiene video/en/

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.

GROWTH MINDSET The role of a teacher or school leader is a challenging role that requires perseverance, patience and hard work to meet the challenges that are presented daily. As educators we grow, learn, develop skills and we also make mistakes. An idea that I and other teachers rely upon is the idea of ‘Growth mindset’ ……………………….Mindset is a simple idea theorised by world renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great achievement. At our school we promote the idea of a growth mindset. Our brains are a muscle just like the other muscles, it changes and gets stronger the more you use it. The approaches we take to assessing learning, the kinds of tasks we assign and the way we report success or failure at school send powerful messages to students not only about their own learning, but also about the nature of learning itself. Working hard, struggling and having difficulties with reading or maths problems should be seen as a good thing. It means your brain is working and is therefore growing stronger. If we are only doing things that are easy then we are not working our brain muscles. Another way of looking at this struggle and hard work is comfort zone versus learning zone. At school we provide the right level of support alongside the right level of challenge as a key element in reducing the anxiety levels of students and promoting a growth mindset. Attendance Attendance can, and does, make a substantial difference to the learning of every child. While missing a day or two might seem insignificant at the time, they soon add up and impact on student connectedness to their peers (friend ships and working groups), the classroom and school. Late arrivals also play a major role in student morale as well as academic success. Having to walk in late, after class has begun, is not only hard on the child but disturbs the learning of other children who are on task. The roll is marked promptly each day with children who are not present marked late after this time. We are currently working on improving in both of these areas and would really appreciate your support in ensuring your children are both punctual in their arrival and, whenever possible, attend school on a regular, daily basis. Despite it being difficult for them to get up in the mornings the children will thank you for it when they rebuild relationships, enjoy a short play before school with their friends, and are able to join effectively in the morning sessions.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation Term 4 CHESS Dear Parents/carers, CHESS is to be introduced as an extra -curricular subject in Term 4. Absences When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or an email to the school email, [email protected] or lodge on COMPASS. It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school. EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Phone in

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

Respond to text message

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Kind regards Have a great week ahead Pamela Streete Principal
