Principal’s Report Pamela Streete I hope everyone had a great weekend. The weather has definitely turned with the Autumn season in full swing, cooler days and nights. Sound advice is to ensure your child has a jacket and warmer clothes as the days become colder. Staffing:
Congratulations to Mr. Allen on his new appointment at Epping Views Primary School as a Leading Teacher in
Digital Technologies.
Mr. Allen will be sadly missed for his work often behind the scenes with technology and working with students
and staff in the STEM program at Glenroy West, amongst many other roles across the school.
Mr. Steve Allen will be departing Glenroy West Primary School on Friday 4th May so if you would like to say
‘goodbye’; Friday will be his last official day.
On both a personal and professional note on behalf of the staff and School Council, I would like to thank Steve for
his loyalty and commitment to the students, staff and parent community of GWPS.
Good Luck Steve,

Transdisciplinary theme
Where we are in place and time
An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations
and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and
civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
Where we are in place and time. We have been inquiring into past civilisations and systems. The most important
sentence in the Transdisciplinary theme is the sentence. We have been looking at the relationship between past and
new systems and how they are used in modern day systems. Some relationships from past systems and present
systems are engine, wheel design, seats and water slides.
Our central idea is “Past civilizations shape present day systems.” We have looked at civilizations, such as Ancient
Greece, Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt. We have been exploring older objects and how we have upgraded them.
We also compared different ways of how we do things and how other generations did it. Most past civilizations
have created the original idea of certain things that we have upgraded through time and technology. such as street
lights, cars, clothes, pottery, paper are some of the things past civilizations have created.
Introduction By Acay, Ishika, Omer and Vaidehi in 5/6A and Narjis, Hamza, Mahnoor and Pranav of 5/6B
Ziggurat Marble Run
As a group, we have created a Ziggurat Marble Run. A Ziggurat Marble Run is a track with parallel rails, much
like a railway. These ‘tracks’ can then be easily joined together and glued to your base (rectangular prism). It has a
20 cm by 15.5 cm rectangular prism base, which we were learning about recently in maths. It also has an 8cm cube
on top. It takes 3.6 seconds to finish the course. The total length of the slide is 78.5 cm.

Greek Chariot
In our team, we made a Greek chariot using cups, popsicle sticks, tape, origami horses, gluestick lids and skewers.
We used a cut plastic cup because the popsicle sticks were too hard to make a seat. We were thinking of using
bottle lids but they didn’t move so we used gluestick lids for the wheels. The biggest challenge was making the
origami horse because we had to make the folds very neat. We showed good teamwork because we used
everyone’s ideas, like I wanted to make a cup seat. Cloe wanted to use gluestick lids and Sara wanted to make an
origami horse.
By Haania, Cloe and Sara 5/6B
We made our Greek chariot by using the pasta tins as our wheels and the sticks as our base and as our axel. We
used popsicle sticks and cardboard as a seat. We faced two challenges. The first one was the wheels weren’t
moving so we realised we need an axel. Then we had the problem with the axel, it got out of place so we put it
back in place with stickytape. We showed teamwork by staying resilient and not giving up when things weren’t
working.

STUDENT ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 It is very pleasing that high interest is regularly shown at our school. Prospective parents have already begun making enquiries about 2019 places for Foundation students. Enquiries will continue throughout the year and will come from local families, those looking to move into the area and, families from much further afield. Through these encounters, we gain feedback about Glenroy West and information which clearly indicates that our learning environment and practices are held in high regard.
FOUNDATION 2019 This is very important information not just for current parents who will have another child beginning foundation in 2019 but for all members of our school community. Our enrolment policy and how decisions are made about admission to Glenroy West Primary School is public information and as such is detailed in newsletters, information sessions and on our website. Context:
In Victoria all school aged children have a designated neighbourhood government
school
Some schools will have a designated neighbourhood boundary
Designated school is defines as the nearest school to the students’ permanent
address
Government expectations are ( if children are being schooled in the Government
system) that they attend this neighbourhood school
Each school has a designated student capacity number
When that capacity number is reached enforcement of a neighbourhood boundary
policy may be applied for and approved by the Regional Director.
If any family has a child to enrol for Foundation 2019, please email the Assistant Principal, Anne Kyriacou- [email protected] or call the school on 9306-8955. Enrolment Packs- Please note the collection of enrolment packs are available at the school office. FOUNDATION 2019 INFORMATION NIGHT This will be held on Wednesday 16th May from 6-7pm. This is an open meeting for prospective parents and interested community members and is always well attended. Parents please spread the word so we can organise seating and numbers attending. NAPLAN Naplan for Year 3 and 5 will be on May 15th, 16th and 17th Sensible preparation for any school day or undertaking tests is to ensure students go to bed early, have a healthy breakfast, water bottle, healthy lunch and snack. Try to keep minimal stress at home and help your child arrive early in preparation for the day. Encourage your child with their homework throughout the year. Promote confidence by encouraging them to have a go and to try their best. Discuss feelings and concerns – your child may be experiencing and reassure them of your expectations to do your best. Keep perspective as this is one form of assessment, success is not determined by one test. We would like this to be as smooth as possible so the children can perform at their best and most relaxed. I have had quite a number of parents asking how they can help their child: I would suggest-
Daily silent reading – build up from 10-15 minutes to 20-30 minutes. This will assist your child to read the
test paper quickly and to concentrate for over 30 minutes.
Daily Mathletics for quick revision of a range of numeracy question
SCHOOL UNIFORM AVAILABLE ONLINE Dear Parents/carers, Please be advised you can also purchase school uniform online on our school website under Student, then click on Uniform and go to essential Clothing on their website. FREE DELIVERY AVAILABLE Phone Debra at Essential Clothing on- Phone: 03 9305- 5177 Mobile: 0409 185 524 EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE It is DET policy for parents/carers to be contacted on the first day of absence from 2018. At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS
Staying home to celebrate a birthday
Going shopping
Looking after a sibling
Spending time with a relative
Extended weekends
Overseas travel
Dental and medical appointment
Illness
If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. Parents/carers will be contacted on the first day of absence from the beginning of 2018. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Please be aware from March 1st 2014, new federal government laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please inform your child’s teacher so we can work together to get your child to school every day. Kind regards and enjoy your week, Pam Streete Principal
