On February 4 th the Cheshire Chapter of Hadassah was at the rink at Quinnipiac University. We had terrific seats right next to the home net watching the Bobcats defeat the Dartmouth Big Green. A total of 80 people attended the game with our group, and we all had a fantastic time schmoozing with our friends, talking sports, and watching our kids attack Boomer, the QU mascot! Presidents’ Message

January 22nd was the 39th anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which established a woman’s right to reproductive choice. Advocates on both sides of the issue have taken this opportunity to galvanize thousands of supporters, hosting marches across the country and online. Activists opposed to reproductive rights are working hard to prevent and reverse laws that protect a women’s right to choice. Members of the congressional leadership spoke yesterday at the March for Life rally—reaffirming their commitment to defund women’s heath services, decrease access to reproductive coverage and elect politicians who will work to oppose and overturn Roe v. Wade. Personhood amendments—legislation and ballot initiatives that would declare a fertilized egg a person— were defeated last fall in states like Mississippi, but are now gaining support in Ohio and Kansas, with more expected in the months to come. Show your support for women’s reproductive rights today! Here are a series of actions that are available to you on Hadassah’s National Action Center (http://hadassah.org/actioncenter). This information can also be used as talking points to contact your local media and state elected officials, or for bulletins, Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Use the links on the website to learn more and make your voice heard. 1. Contact your legislators and voice opposition to family planning funding cuts, restrictions on women’s health

access and reproductive services, and personhood amendments. Take action!

2. Urge your legislators to co-sponsor the Military Access to Reproductive Care and Health (MARCH) for Military Women Act and work towards its passage. Take action!

3. Thank the Administration for requiring most employers, including religiously affiliated non-profits, to provide full contraceptive coverage (without co-pays) for their employees. Take action!

Cheshire Hadassah encompasses choice and taking action. Our wonderful members get to choose from a wide variety of educational and stimulating programming. Join us for one our up-coming events. We are lucky to be a part of this wonderful organization as we celebrate our Centennial year. Since 1912 Hadassah has been healing, impacting, changing, cultivating, and educating members just like you. Sarah Moskowitz and Marcie Steinberg Co-Presidents

Book Discussion Group

Although there was a small turnout for our book discussion in the beginning of February, it was not short on conversation as we talked about our favorite and funniest stories in the compilation of The Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt. We would love to encourage another book discussion in late spring or early summer and welcome a recommendation. Please email Andrea at [email protected]. We have some other wonderful educational ideas in the works including a Torah Parsha discussion/Tea and an Israeli cooking demonstration.

Respectfully Submitted, Andrea Joseph and Sherri Sosensky

YOU DID IT!!! Over 50,000 new Centennial Life Members and Associates!

YOU, the members and leaders of Hadassah's groups, chapters and Regions/Big Chapters helped over 50,000 women, men and children become a part of our extraordinary organization for life.

Thank you for sharing your passion and commitment, and providing Hadassah with a cadre of new supporters as we celebrate our Centennial.

Todah Raba and Kol Ha Kovad!

Hadassah National Board Enacts New Policy Statement In response to recent discriminatory acts against women by extremists in Israel , Hadassah’s National Board voted yesterday to enact the fol-lowing Zionist Affairs Policy Statement.

Protecting Women’s Rights in Israel Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., has always stood firmly against discrimination with regard to gender and religion, and denounces recent attempts by religious extremists to segregate and discriminate against women in Israel 's public spaces. Hadas-sah maintains its long-standing commitment to the principle of religious pluralism and the preservation of Jewish unity. Hadassah Members and Associates have a clear understanding of the dangers of discrimination. We believe that each individual has the right to live, study and work in an atmosphere free from harassment and discriminatory practices. These practices threaten a community's viability, and all levels of government have an obligation to protect all of its citizens from such abhorrent behavior. Hadassah welcomes the public statements of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres on the current discrimination against women in Israel and calls on religious and political leaders throughout the State to join in condemning—and committing to end—these extremist positions. Hadassah urges the government of the State of Israel and all its municipalities to address instances of public discrimination against women, fully investigate such cases and bring those who commit these acts to justice.

Garden of Trees

Cheshire Hadassah is initiating a new project for the chapter called Garden of Trees. The goal is to encourage the purchasing of trees for Israel. The first 100 trees will be dedicated to the memory of Beth Tennenbaum, a past-President and lifetime member. Beth passed away in January after a long, courageous battle with Cancer.

The official launch date of the Garden of Trees is at The Past-Presidents Dinner honoring our Centennial Year and the program will continue through December 2013. Trees can be purchased at any time for $5.00. Once the 100 trees have been purchased, The Garden of Trees certificate will be presented to Beth's family. All participants will be recognized on the certificate as well as in the quarterly bulletin. Our ultimate goal is to purchase three Gardens of Trees, the first in memory of Beth Tennenbaum and the later two gardens with the theme of flowers and fruit.

To encourage participation we will have two additional events: Sunday, May 6th, we are inviting all members and their children to decorate certificates that will be sold for the Gardens of Trees. Children will decorate certificates in honor of Israel's Birthday and a light nosh will be served . Place and details of the event are forthcoming. In June, we are plan-ning a Wine and Trees program at The Clay Date in Woodbridge, CT. This will also be an educational program about the origins and significance of Mezuzahs. We will be able to paint Judaic clay art and have light fare and cocktails. Details forthcoming.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jean Caplan, Bonnie Donato, or Leslie White.

Hadassah Medical Organization Board Names Its First Woman Chairman NEW YORK – The board of directors of Hadassah Medical Organization, the pioneering health care provider for the State of Israel, today named Esther Dominissini its chairman. Dominissini, Director General at the National Insurance Institute in Jerusalem, is the first woman to lead the HMO board.

“I have been fortunate to work for many years with the Israeli government, gaining valuable experiences and a deep familiarity with the govern-ment, particularly the Ministry of Health,” said Dominissini, who lives in Kiryat Ono, near Tel Aviv. “It is an honor to be selected by my peers to the leadership of the HMO board, and I look forward to working with my fellow board members, with HMO management, including our new Director General, Prof. Ehud Kokia, and with the thousands of women at Hadassah, as together we take Hadassah into its second century.”

Dominissini joined the HMO board in March 2010. Professionally, she has been Director General at the National Insurance Institute since 2008. In that role, she manages the 4,000-employee institute whose work in social policy falls under the purview of the minister of welfare and social ser-vices.

“Esti’s leadership in National Insurance brings Hadassah a wealth of knowledge about the public sector,” said Joyce Rabin, who serves as Hadassah Medical Organization Chair on the board of directors of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. “She is a highly respected member of the board who asks critical questions and offers concrete alternatives as the board deliberates on matters of vital importance to HMO.”

Previous to her current role at the National Insurance Institute, Dominissini was Director General of the Israel National Employment Service, part of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. Her primary responsibility was helping unemployed individuals find work via overseeing a nationwide network of 71 local employment bureaus staffed by 800 people.

Before spending six years as director of the Academic College of Law in Ramat Gan, Dominissini served as a major general in the Israel Police, leading the department of community and civil guard. She was promoted to that role after heading the human resources division.

Dominissini holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Tel Aviv University, where she also took graduate courses in criminology and criminal law, as well as a bachelor’s in sociology from Hebrew University.

Dominissini succeeds Yossi Rosen, who became chairman of the HMO board in April 2010. He continues as an elected member of the board.

“We are grateful for Yossi’s leadership and that he will continue as a director,” said Hadassah National President Marcie Natan. “We eagerly wel-come Esti and appreciate how Yossi and Esti are already working together to ensure a smooth transition.

“As we approach the opening of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower and Hadassah’s centennial celebration in 2012, we look forward to her valuable contributions as our hospitals continue to provide world-class research and outstanding medical care to over one million patients every year.”
