MEMBERSHIP NEWS UPDATE

Do you know that there are Hadassah members in every Congressional district in the nation? We are mothers and daughters, nurses and doctors, homemakers and teachers, activists. An invisible connection binds us to each other, into a community. We share a profound love for the Jewish people, and Israel. We share a commitment to women and believe in women’s strength—and our own. We strive to act on our Jewish values, and make the world just a little better, every day. Above all, we know that each of us can make a difference and that, together, we can transform the world and change history. We know it because we’ve been doing it for a century, and we won’t stop now. 2016 has been a good year for Suffolk Region membership; thanks to Hadassah’s gifting program we have added 117 new annual members. We urge those who gifted a membership to contact the new member and urge her to renew her membership or upgrade to life. All annual members whose membership expires in 2016 are eligible for the $180 life membership upgrade special. Noteworthy is that all of our region’s chapters have reached, exceeded or are close to meeting their membership goals for 2016 and have earned certificates of distinction from national Hadassah for this achievement. At the National Convention Business Session in Atlanta in July, the delegates voted to change the 2017 Life Membership fee to $250 as of January 1, 2017. Annual Membership dues will remain at $36 for 2017. Please continue to promote the $180 upgrade special for Gifted and Annual Memberships before the price increase. With Gratitude

My three year term as Suffolk Region President will conclude this December. I thank everyone for your confidence, faith, and trust in me as your Region Hadassah President. I’ve done my best these three years to strengthen our region, our chapters, and our relationship with National Hadassah.

I’ve kept us organized and on the move. We have cleaned out, updated, and beautified our office including wonderful display shelving in the hall promoting who we are and what we do. Everyone who passes knows Suffolk Hadassah resides in Room 53 of the Suffolk Y-JCC.

We have added new members, we have engaged both new and seasoned women with our events and programs, including our Annual Walkathon for Stem Cell Research, our Day in the District, trips, Associate Activities, Concert at the Y, promotion of the Legacy Society, Convention, the Chai Society with our Chai pin creation. The list goes on.

I could not have done it alone. With grateful appreciation I thank our administrative assistant, Ronee Baldwin for her ongoing support, our treasurer Myra Friedman who is still overseeing our transition to consolidated banking, and has lowered our costs and watched our bills so that even more money can go to National. I thank each and every member of our region board, including our eight chapter presidents who gave their time, talent and energy to engage our members and focus on much needed fundraising.

Our membership is strong, our fundraising efforts are solid, our programs are great, and our leadership is excellent. January 1st Stacy Berman will take over the region as Suffolk Region President. I wish Stacy and her board all the best as she takes the Suffolk Region from Strength to Strength. I will always be there to render guidance, support and help when needed. Suffolk Hadassah is in my heart.

These past three years have been an engaging and exhilarating experience. I’ve met likeminded women throughout the country. I feel the work we do through Hadassah helps to strengthen Israel – a noble mission. Steve and I have become Zionists knowing the need to keep Israel strong and vibrant. I experienced an exciting and purposeful three years as your Suffolk Region President.

Thank you! Thank you Suffolk Hadassah As always, Love in Hadassah Phyllis

Journal 2016 is Coming Soon!

The 2016 issue of Suffolk Region’s 46th Annual Journal will make its debut at the Women of the Year and Installation Luncheon on Thursday, November 17, 2016. This year’s Journal theme, The Power of Your Dreams, captures all that Hadassah is about. We, as motivated and driven women, through our hard work in soliciting ads and never-ending desire to raise funds for Hadassah’s cutting edge medical research and programs, have once again proven that we can make the dreams of Hadassah come alive. As in past years, photos will highlight each of the Chapters in action as well as recognize the hundreds of merchant supporters of Hadassah. Yet this year we have a dream to also make the Journal available ON-LINE for everyone to see. Keep an eye out for this exciting big step as Journal goes high-tech!

NEWS FROM THE REGION

PAGE 8 SOUNDINGS • FALL/WINTER 2016 - 17

Hadassah’s Annual 2016 Convention The Power of Our Dreams

Hadassah’s 98th National Convention took place in Atlanta, Georgia in July.

Our Hadassah founder, Henrietta Szold said, “Dare to dream…and when you dream, dream big.” Our big dreams, brought to life by all of our efforts, have kept Hadassah’s work relevant and meaningful as we’ve evolved with our changing world. We were inspired, informed, energized and entertained as we convened to celebrate Hadassah’s past, present and future. We saw celebrities and heard wonderful speakers. All of us in the Suffolk Region were honored to be there for Ellen Hershkin’s first convention as National President. Hearing her inspirational words was exciting. We learned what it means to be part of The Power of Women Who Do.

Attendees from Suffolk included: Phyllis Abramson, Stacy Berman, Pam Diamond, Ann Heller, Anita Leibowitz, Patty Lerner, Vickie Moskowitz, Lee Pinchuk, JoAnne Shapiro, and Ellen Zuckerman. Past Region Presidents Renee Albert and Leona Cohen joined us also.

We were motivated by many speakers. We learned the power to advocate for issues important to women, to support ground breaking medical research, to foster dialogue on Zionism, to educate and build leaders, to connect with the land and people of Israel.

Working and celebrating we all hope the Power of Our Dreams will be achieved as we move forward.

Pam Diamond, 2016 Convention Chair

In Memoriam: Helen and Isadore (Itchy) Adelson Helen Adelson was president of the Pioneer Westhampton Beach Chapter of Hadassah and past Region Organization Vice President. Itchy, a Hadassah Associate, was active in the Hampton Synagogue of Westhampton Beach and supported Helen in her Hadassah efforts.

They succumbed to injuries sustained in a horrific and tragic accident on the Long Island Expressway this past August. The Suffolk Region mourns their loss and extends to their four daughters and family our heartfelt condolences and sympathy.

In Memory of Elie Wiesel

World Jewry lost an eloquent supporter. Elie Wiesel bore witness to the Holocaust by telling the story of what happened. His mission was to share the evil so that mankind knew what occurred and would never forget. His book, Night, is perhaps his best writing for people everywhere to learn and understand the Holocaust and its impact on the Jewish people.

To quote Elie, “The worst choices are made by people who have chosen to sit idly by while others kill.” Wiesel taught that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.

He was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and dedicated humanitarian who didn’t hesitate to speak truth to power. Suffolk Hadassah mourns the passing of one of our greatest – Elie Wiesel.

The third time is a charm!!! On May 15th, Suffolk Region of Hadassah held its third annual walkathon for stem cell research. Our goal was to raise money for this important work and if we also had some fun, well that would be great, too. I am happy to report that we achieved both goals. We raised over $23,000 and had great fun: good food, good music, good weather and great camaraderie.

Our success was due to the energy and generosity of women and men like you. I don’t just mean generosity of money but of time, energy and spirit, as well. We couldn’t have done it without you, the members of Suffolk Region Hadassah, the members of our Walkathon Committee and the many, many husbands who joined us.

Thank you for your support, contributions, sponsorships, hard work & appearance that day.
