SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2016 (PAGE 14) DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU Punjab to take on Tamil Nadu in 62nd National School Games U-19 Football finals Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 9: Scripting convincing victories over their rivals in the semifinals, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have sealed berth in the finals and will lock horns with each other in the summit clash of the ongoing 62nd National School Games Under-19 Football Championship, being organized by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, under the aegis of School Games Federation of India at various venues, here. Punjab defeated Uttar Pradesh by three goals to nil (3-0) in an easy contest. Punjab players dom- inated the game from the word go and made splendid moves to keep the opposition under pressure. Rohit Jhamat scored 2 goals for Punjab in 36th and 65th minutes, while the third goal was netted by Mohd Danish in 70th minute of the match. In another semifinal, Tamil Nadu got better of KVS in a close contest by (4-2) via tie-breaker. None of the teams could manage to score in the stipulated time and failed to score in extra time also and the match was only decided in penalty shootouts, wherein Tamil Nadu prevailed over KVS by (4-2). For Tamil Nadu, the goals were scored H Madhav Vignesh, B Allanda and Suhail Basha, while for KVS, the goals were scored by Jassulua and Avleen. Earlier, in the quarterfinal at GGM Science College Football ground, Uttar Pradesh defeated Rajasthan by two goals to nil (2- 0). For UP, Akleem Khan pelted the first goal in 49th minute, while Manoj M. scored the sec- ond goal in 61st minute. In another quarterfinal at Jammu University ground, Punjab outplayed Chandigarh by a solitary goal and the goal scor- er was Manjinder Singh, who netted it in 63rd minute of the match. At MA Stadium, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) got better of Chhattisgarh by four goals to three (4-3) via tie-break- er. Abhik, Arun, Jassi and Vivek were the goal scorers for KVS, while B Gourav, Abhishek Dubey and Pranay Bahadur netted the goals for Chhattisgarh. Earlier, none of the teams managed to score any goal in the stipulated time and the extra time as well. At BSF Paloura ground, Tamil Nadu defeated Jharkhand by four goals to three (4-3) via tie-breaker. Both the teams failed to score any goal in the stipulated time and the extra time as well. The goal scorers for Tamil Nadu were S. Prethis, B Allen Rahu, D. Keerthi and V. Shasi Muga, while the goal scorers for Jharkhand were Mukul Ekka, Anil Kum- Minj and Raj S. The semifinal matches were officiated by the panel of experts including AR Paddar, Showkat Waza, Tariq Ahmed Khan, Mohd Shafi, Vipin Kumar, Sanjay Verma, Danesh Singh, Sarfaraz Nabi, Nisar Hussain and Vivek Slathia. Now, Punjab will take on Tamil Nadu in the summit clash at 11 am at BSF Paloura ground tomorrow. Vijay, Pujara shine after India bowl England out for 400 MUMBAI, Dec 9: India made a strong reply with the bat after off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up yet another five-wicket haul as the hosts reached 146 for 1 on the second day of the fourth cricket Test against England here today. After Ashwin took two more wickets today to return with innings figures of 6/112, Murali Vijay (70 batting) and Cheteshwar Pujara (47 batting) led a solid Indian reply to England's first innings 400 all out with a 107-run stand for the unbroken second wicket to help the hosts take the Day 2 honours. India, 2-0 up in the five-match Test series, now trail England by 254 runs with nine first innings wickets in hand on a Wankhede Stadium track offering copious turn and bounce to the spinners. Opener Vijay rediscovered his form with an elegant knock of 70 not out while in-form number three Pujara continued to torment the visitors with his impeccable judgement with his bat in making 47 not out as India closed the day with their nose ahead on 146 for 1 in 52 overs. The duo's unfinished second wicket partnership of 107 runs came from 228 balls and it was their seventh 100-plus stand in Tests and second of the series after the double century stand in the drawn series opener at Rajkot. Earlier, Indian spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja claimed all the 10 wickets between them to bowl England out for 400 in the visi- tors' first innings, 22 minutes into the second session. Ashwin bagged 6 for 112 with his off-spin, his 23rd five-wicket haul in his 43rd match, while left- arm spinner Jadeja claimed 4 for 109 as the tourists were all out in the post-lunch session. Thus Chhattisgarh gained a vital first innings lead of 138 runs. Chhattisgarh were 101 for the loss of one wicket in their second innings at stumps on day-3 today. Sahil Gupta was the only batsman to be dismissed at his individual score of 33 runs, while Manoj Singh (45) and Amandeep Khare (17) were at the crease. (PTI) Junior football league culminates Excelsior Sports Correspondent SRINAGAR, Dec 9: The football fever that had gripped the entire Ganderbal region over the past 45 days could not have asked for a better antidote as the specta- tors, who had been turning up in large numbers all through the tourney, were treated today to an exceptional display of sporting skills in a keenly contested final match. Gauging the strong desire of the local youth to express them- selves through their sporting prowess, a group of local volun- teers led by Javed Ahmed planned a first of its kind Junior Football League in Ganderbal district, a Defence spokesman said here. "Always willing to extend support to the youth, the Army came forward as a catalyst on being approached. Within days of providing necessary kit and two experienced trainers for the local teams, the Lar Junior Football League was under way at the pic- turesque Gurwan Stadium," he said. The tournament saw 10 teams putting their best foot forward to outplay the other for the coveted maiden trophy and in the process, winning hearts of the spectators through admirable display of sportsman spirit, said the Defence spokesman. The final match was deserv- ingly played between Dangerpura Gladiators and Lar City teams which the former won with a soli- tary goal. Punjab University lifts Silver Rolling Trophy in Annual NZ Inter University Declamation Contest Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 9: The team from Punjab University, Chandigarh won the Silver Rolling Trophy at the Second Annual North Zone Inter University Declamation Contest organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu today . The Silver Rolling Trophy for the same has been instituted by N N Vohra, Governor J & K State. Students from different Universities of North Zone participated in this contest. The topic for the contest was "Is the pace of growth and development determined by the quality of governance?" On which, all the participants ren- dered thought provoking speeches. Teams from Panjab University, Chandigarh, DAV University, Jallandhar, Central University of Punjab, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra and University of Jammu partic- ipated in the contest. The Tournament was organ- ized by 160 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at HSS Sunjuwan. Anoop Yadav, Captain of Indian Kabaddi team was the chief guest on the concluding ceremony, while Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Simrandeep Singh and DIG, CRPF were the guests of hon- our. A total of eight team partici- pated in this event to vie for the top honours. The trials were held by the team of experts from State Sports Council. Around 120 paddlers took part in the selection process. After the selection process is over, the team will be screened by the Screening Committee of Sports Council and the selected team is expected to leave for onward participation in the National Championship to be held at Maheshwaram. Sec. School, Jammu in an easy contest. Project Model Hr. Sec. School won the toss and elected to field first. Batting first, KC International school scored 190 runs. Rakshit scored 55 and Satvik contributed 27 runs to the total. Arastu Sharma of Project Model Hr. Sec School was the wrecker-in-chief, who claimed 5 wickets, while Agastya Sharma took 3 wickets. Scout s and Guides Movement confers national awards Shawl of Rajouri gets 'Silver Elephant Award-2015' Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 9: Adding an another feather to Jammu and Kashmir, Assistant State Organizing Commissioner (S) Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mr Muhammad Bashir Shawl, a Retired Lecturer of Thanamandi, Rajouri, has been honoured with the 'Silver Elephant Award-2015' which is the highest National Award of the Scout and Guide Movement in India. Muhammad Bashir Shawl received this prestigious award from President of India Pranab Mukherjee at an impressive func- tion held at Darbar Hall in Rashtrapati Bhawan on December 5. The award has been conferred to Mr. Shawl in recognition of his exemplary leadership and out- standing contribution to Scout/Guide movement in Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab to take on Tamil Nadu in 62ndNational School Games U-19 Football finals

JAMMU, Dec 9: Scriptingconvincing victories over theirrivals in the semifinals, Punjaband Tamil Nadu have sealed berthin the finals and will lock hornswith each other in the summitclash of the ongoing 62ndNational School Games Under-19Football Championship, beingorganized by the Directorate ofYouth Services and Sports, underthe aegis of School GamesFederation of India at variousvenues, here.

Punjab defeated Uttar Pradeshby three goals to nil (3-0) in aneasy contest. Punjab players dom-inated the game from the word goand made splendid moves to keepthe opposition under pressure.Rohit Jhamat scored 2 goals forPunjab in 36th and 65th minutes,while the third goal was netted byMohd Danish in 70th minute ofthe match.

In another semifinal, TamilNadu got better of KVS in a closecontest by (4-2) via tie-breaker.None of the teams could manageto score in the stipulated time andfailed to score in extra time also

and the match was only decidedin penalty shootouts, whereinTamil Nadu prevailed over KVSby (4-2). For Tamil Nadu, thegoals were scored H MadhavVignesh, B Allanda and SuhailBasha, while for KVS, the goalswere scored by Jassulua andAvleen.

Earlier, in the quarterfinal at

GGM Science College Footballground, Uttar Pradesh defeatedRajasthan by two goals to nil (2-0). For UP, Akleem Khan peltedthe first goal in 49th minute,while Manoj M. scored the sec-ond goal in 61st minute.

In another quarterfinal atJammu University ground,Punjab outplayed Chandigarh bya solitary goal and the goal scor-er was Manjinder Singh, whonetted it in 63rd minute of thematch.

At MA Stadium, KendriyaVidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) gotbetter of Chhattisgarh by fourgoals to three (4-3) via tie-break-er. Abhik, Arun, Jassi and Vivekwere the goal scorers for KVS,while B Gourav, Abhishek Dubey

and Pranay Bahadur netted thegoals for Chhattisgarh. Earlier,none of the teams managed toscore any goal in the stipulatedtime and the extra time as well.

At BSF Paloura ground,Tamil Nadu defeated Jharkhandby four goals to three (4-3) viatie-breaker. Both the teams failedto score any goal in the stipulated

Thus Chhattisgarh gained avital first innings lead of 138runs.

Chhattisgarh were 101 for theloss of one wicket in their secondinnings at stumps on day-3 today.

SRINAGAR, Dec 9: Thefootball fever that had gripped theentire Ganderbal region over thepast 45 days could not have askedfor a better antidote as the specta-tors, who had been turning up inlarge numbers all through thetourney, were treated today to anexceptional display of sportingskills in a keenly contested finalmatch.

Gauging the strong desire ofthe local youth to express them-selves through their sportingprowess, a group of local volun-teers led by Javed Ahmedplanned a first of its kind JuniorFootball League in Ganderbaldistrict, a Defence spokesmansaid here.

"Always willing to extendsupport to the youth, the Armycame forward as a catalyst onbeing approached. Within days ofproviding necessary kit and two

experienced trainers for the localteams, the Lar Junior FootballLeague was under way at the pic-turesque Gurwan Stadium," hesaid.

The tournament saw 10 teamsputting their best foot forward tooutplay the other for the covetedmaiden trophy and in the process,winning hearts of the spectatorsthrough admirable display ofsportsman spirit, said the Defencespokesman.

The final match was deserv-ingly played between DangerpuraGladiators and Lar City teamswhich the former won with a soli-tary goal. The Tournament was organ-ized by 160 Battalion of CentralReserve Police Force (CRPF) atHSS Sunjuwan.

The trials were held by theteam of experts from StateSports Council.

Around 120 paddlers tookpart in the selection process.

After the selection process isover, the team will be screenedby the Screening Committee ofSports Council and the selectedteam is expected to leave foronward participation in theNational Championship to beheld at Maheshwaram.

Project Model Hr. Sec.School won the toss and electedto field first.

Muhammad Bashir Shawlreceived this prestigious awardfrom President of India PranabMukherjee at an impressive func-tion held at Darbar Hall inRashtrapati Bhawan onDecember 5.

The award has been conferredto Mr. Shawl in recognition of hisexemplary leadership and out-standing contribution toScout/Guide movement in

Jammu and Kashmir. He is asso-ciated with the scout movementfor more than four decades. Mr.Shawl has received numerousawards earlier also.

Mr. Shawl is instrumental inspreading the unity and patriotismamong children of border districtsof the State as a Unit Leader ofScouts. He utilized opportunitiesto improve his scouting skills byparticipating in InternationalCourses and events held in SriLanka, Egypt, Saudi Arabia andPakistan. UDHAMPUR, Dec 9:National Model Academy KailPardhai conducted its 6th annualsports meet 2016-17 in theSchool premises, here today.

SSP Udhampur, ShailendraMishra was the chief guest onthe occasion. Tehsildar Majalta,Ved Parkash was the guest ofhonour , ZPEO MajaltaKuldeep Kumar Gupta was spe-cial guest.

Earlier, Managing Directorof the School, Nirmal Kesarpresented welcome address.

Many cultural and sportsitems were held on the occasionand the winners were felicitatedby the chief guest and other dig-nitaries.
