MUMBAI, Dec 9:

India made a strong reply withthe bat after off-spinnerRavichandran Ashwin picked upyet another five-wicket haul asthe hosts reached 146 for 1 on thesecond day of the fourth cricketTest against England here today.

After Ashwin took two morewickets today to return withinnings figures of 6/112, MuraliVijay (70 batting) andCheteshwar Pujara (47 batting)led a solid Indian reply toEngland's first innings 400 all outwith a 107-run stand for theunbroken second wicket to helpthe hosts take the Day 2 honours.

India, 2-0 up in the five-matchTest series, now trail England by254 runs with nine first inningswickets in hand on a WankhedeStadium track offering copiousturn and bounce to the spinners.

Opener Vijay rediscovered hisform with an elegant knock of 70not out while in-form numberthree Pujara continued to tormentthe visitors with his impeccablejudgement with his bat in making47 not out as India closed the daywith their nose ahead on 146 for 1in 52 overs.

The duo's unfinished secondwicket partnership of 107 runscame from 228 balls and it wastheir seventh 100-plus stand inTests and second of the seriesafter the double century stand inthe drawn series opener at Rajkot.

Earlier, Indian spin twinsRavichandran Ashwin andRavindra Jadeja claimed all the10 wickets between them to bowlEngland out for 400 in the visi-tors' first innings, 22 minutes intothe second session.

Ashwin bagged 6 for 112 withhis off-spin, his 23rd five-wickethaul in his 43rd match, while left-arm spinner Jadeja claimed 4 for109 as the tourists were all out in

the post-lunch session. Ashwinhas now equalled legendary KapilDev's tally of 23 five-wickethauls in Test cricket to be behindjust Anil Kumble (35) andHarbhajan Singh (25).

Opener K L Rahul (24) wasout before Vijay and Pujara, whohad put on a stand of 211 in theseries opener at Rajkot, cametogether to consolidate theinnings by negotiating the spinof Moeen Ali and Adil Rashidwith aplomb.

India grabbed three wicketsin the first session after Englandcommenced at the overnight 288for five and then claimed the lasttwo wickets within six oversafter lunch.

Jos Buttler was the last man tobe dismissed for 76, the second-highest scorer after the 112 madeby debutant opener KeatonJennings yesterday. He wasbowled by Jadeja after he faced

137 balls and hit six fours and onesix.

Jadeja had grabbed two out ofthree wickets in the first session -- sending back Chris Woakes andAdil Rashid -- after Ashwin hadgiven the first break for the homeside with the dismissal ofovernight not out Ben Stokes for31.

Ashwin, who had four scalps

in his kitty yesterday, addedanother wicket by dismissing thetall number 10 batsman Jake Ball(31 off 60 balls) who added 54runs with Buttler for the ninthwicket, a very useful stand.

Indian openers Rahul andVijay started confidently againstthe pace attack of the visitors whotried to use the short ball to unset-tle both without success. Vijay, who had got out on a few occa-sions in the series to the short ballaimed at his ribs, negotiated sim-ilar threats with more conviction.

Vijay, who scored 126 in thefirst innings of the series openerat Rajkot before going off theboil, started with a superb drivepast Woakes while Rahul alsoplayed pleasing drives -- a back-foot punch square of the wicketoff leggie Rashid -- catching theeye. (PTI)
