A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM

T oday concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the Kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request

that God made of Solomon in today’s first read-ing: “Ask something of me and I will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5). Today’s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, “A share in your kingdom, O God!” Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures—the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE REVELATION OF YOUR WORD SHEDS LIGHT

J esus is speaking in parables and offers three different images for the kingdom of heaven. Remember that popular line from a phone commercial: “Can you hear me now?” Jesus is trying to teach and

basically says, “Do you understand me now? Do you get it now? Then let me explain it another way.” He is shedding light on just how very im-portant his mission is, that the kingdom of God is the most important thing, and that we must make every choice, every effort to strive for it. To use a sports metaphor, Jesus is telling us we must not look for immediate satis-faction, but we must “play the long game” because in the end, this is the only thing that really matters. -Copyright © J. SUNDAY MASS DISPENSATION

W hile Masses have begun to reopen with limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many, especially those at risk, will still not be able to attend Mass in person. Archbish-

op José H. Gomez dispenses all the Catholic faithful of the Archdio-cese of Los Angeles and all Catholics currently in the Archdiocese from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass until further notice. We en-courage you, the Faithful, to keep the Lord’s Day holy. Some ways to do this include: reading the Gospels, praying with your families, and to join yourself to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion. Please remember that the risk of coronavirus is real, and it is dangerous. While these Orders are discouraging and disappointing, this is the time to pray for one another, trust in Jesus, and focus on the care and love he has for each one of us. May Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Queen of the Angels, continue to bless our parishes and loved ones with good health, joy, and peace.

DID YOU KNOW?

R efresh your summer water safety rules. With many vacations cancelled due to the corona-virus pandemic, families may be

spending a lot of time at local beaches. Before you hit the sand, brush up on your water safety rules with your children. Think about implementing the buddy system, where two people stick together and keep an eye on each other. Know who will be in charge of watching children at each time, and, if possible, make sure the adults in your family know CPR. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Refresh your memory about summer water safety” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
