(ARA) - When it comes tohome improvement, you don'thave to be a professional to getprofessional-looking results. Many simple projects can dra-matically update your home andare easy enough for even thenovice do-it-yourselfer.

Start by choosing one of thesmallest rooms in your homethat you use every day - thebathroom. With these four fastfixes, you'll achieve fabulousresults that are shockingly easy.

Vamp up your vanityJust by its name, the bath-

room vanity should exude beau-ty to make a style statement inyour bath. However, if your cur-rent vanity features chippedpaint or a dated color - it's timefor an update. Rather than buy-ing new, you can easily makeyour current vanity look cleanand fresh with a coat of paint.

To prep for your project, remove the doors and drawers, tape off any areas that you don'twant painted and wipe downeverything with soap and water. For the transformation, spray aprimer over the cabinet surfaceand apply several light coats ofan indoor/outdoor spray paint inyour favorite color. Once every-thing is dry, install the doorsand drawers for a brand new

look.Time: two to three hours

Don't fear your faucetWhile anything that has to do

with plumbing seems over-whelming - don't fear. Updatingyour bathroom faucet is a fairlysimple project that can dramati-cally update the look of yourupdated vanity. To start, deter-mine whether your sink orcountertop requires a centerset(one-piece) or widespread (han-dles and spout are separate)faucet.

Once you know the type offaucet you need, manufactur-ers, such as Moen, offer a wideselection of style and finishoptions to meet your designdesires. The BanburyCollection, available at theHome Depot, offers a traditionaldesign in both low- or high-arcversions and in stylish finishes, such as Chrome, BrushedNickel and MediterraneanBronze.

To install your faucet, be sureyou have the proper tools. Then, just follow the manufac-turer's directions to remove theold faucet and install the new.For extra help, websites, suchas moen.com, offer step-by-step bathroom design videos to

walk you through the simpleprocess.

Time: one and a half hours

Swap out your showerheadOnce you've mastered swap-

ping out the faucet, changingyour showerhead will be abreeze. In fact, the most difficultpart may be choosing your newshowerhead. At retailers, suchas The Home Depot, you'll finda variety of luxurious, yet inex-pensive, options. Moen'sBanbury line features sevennew options for any showeringpreference, including a five-set-ting wallmount showerhead, afive-setting hand held shower-head and a five-setting combi-nation that includes both handheld and wallmount shower-heads that can be used sepa-rately or together.

Once you've chosen the show-erhead to meet your needs, usea wrench to loosen the currentshowerhead, remove and attachthe new showerhead.

Time: less than 30 minutes

All about the accessoriesOne of the easiest ways to

add a decorative touch andfunctionality to the bath is withaccessories, such as towelbars, towel rings, robe hooks, tank levers, shelves, soap and

toothbrush holders and evencurved shower rods. Luckilyaccessories are simple to installand there are many lines avail-able to perfectly match or com-plement your new faucet styleand finish.

The key to proper installationof accessories is ensuring asecure grip to the wall. This isachieved by attaching theaccessory's mounting plate withat least one mounting screwinto a stud - and support theother by using a hollow-wall fas-tener, such as a molly bolt.Once you have the mountingplates in place, simply attachthe accessory and tighten theset screws.

Time: one and a half to twohours (depending on number ofaccessories installed)

While you may not currentlyfeel like you're a handyman orma'am - these four fast fixesreally are simple enough for anovice. And, by doing it your-self, not only will you savemoney, but also gain a sense ofpride that will encourage you toaccomplish other projectsaround your home.

Better Homes andGardens®, one of the world’smost trusted names in homeand family publishing, hasbeen identifying — and setting— home trends for decades. Here’s how BH&G sees theevolution of American homesin the near future.1. Living Rooms? About one-third of potential homebuyers(primarily those purchasingmodestly priced homes) arewilling to buy a home with noseparate living room.2. Dining Rooms? Formaldining rooms remain on the“must-have” list for both entry-level and upscale buyers.3. Specialty Spaces.Practical ideas throughout thehome include intimate “pocket”spaces in nooks and alcoves, transition spaces with built-ins,and main-level laun-dry/storage/hobby areas.4. Turning Down TheVolume. Homowners are bal-

ancing spaciousness with inti-macy by trading huge vaultedceilings for cozier, more ener-gy-efficient room heights of 8-9 feet.5. A Great View. Becausehomeowners are concernedabout heating and coolingbills, they want easy mainte-nance windows that featurelow-E glass and warm-edgespacers.6. Pining for Elegance. Thesteadily growing popularity ofwood floors will continue. Eco-friendly alternatives such asbamboo are also gaining a“foothold.”7. Workspace/Workhorse.Kitchen islands are increasingin size and popularity becauseof their valuable workspaceand storage capabilities.8. Gathering Spot. Built-inkitchen banquettes not onlyserve as a gathering spot forbreakfast and lunch, they pro-vide an after-school hangout

or study area. They also max-imize kitchen space by provid-ing extra storage beneath thebenches.9. Mix-and-Match Cabinetry.Contrasting wood finisheskeep things more interestingin the kitchen, as opposed toall-white or all-dark cabinets.10. Divide and Conquer.Kitchens are becoming moredefined as we move awayfrom open floorplans. A visual-ly open kitchen with a half-wall

is America’s favorite design. For a wealth of ideas onhome improvement, decorat-ing, and landscaping, visit theBetter Homes and Gardensweb site at www.bhg.com.

(ARA) - Natural stone andceramic tile floors have greatdesign, architectural and sculp-tural qualities. But they can beexpensive, hard to clean, coldto walk on and not very durable.

So imagine transforming youraging flooring with the look ofrich travertine, limestone, con-crete, slate or ceramic tiles, butwithout the cost or frailty ofthese lavish coverings. Today'sluxury vinyl tile (LVT) productsecho the look and styling ofthese natural materials but alsolive up to the rigors and trafficof day-to-day family life. Luxuryvinyl tile offers the perfect mar-riage of design and durabilityfor today's busy homes.Available in a wide range of col-ors, styles and textures, LVTworks in every room of thehouse, giving homeownersunlimited options for fresh style.

"Luxury vinyl tile pops with

depth and realism, combiningclassic and contemporary ele-ments that deliver clean designand stylish floors," says EricaHubbard, Tarkett director ofmarketing - NAFCO LuxuryFloors. "You get all the designfeatures of natural materialswith a much more durable floor. When you stand on these floorsand look down at them, you'rehard pressed to tell you're notreally standing on limestone, travertine, concrete or slate."

Unlike their lookalike naturalcounterparts, today's LVT floorsare created to resist scuffs, stains, scratches and wear. Thisis due to durable constructionand even protective wear layersor coatings, such as Tritonite, exclusively used in NAFCOLuxury Floors. These hardwork-ing construction details helpkeep floors looking new andwear-free.

Flexible, comfortable LVTfloors also have the advantageof being warmer and quieterthan hard-surface natural tilefloors. Soft underfoot, they don'tproduce a hollow sound likeother flooring options.

Another benefit over "real"stone and tile is the safetyaspect of LVT. Unlike stone ortile, LVT isn't as slippery whenwet. Glass or china is less likelyto shatter if accidentallydropped and little knees won'tget scraped during falls.

Further adding to LVT's realis-tic look is the fact that some ofthese floors can feature threevery different installationsoptions: for example, theNAFCO Luxury Floors'PermaStone collection is avail-able in GroutFit, which pro-duces a realistic grout effect;GroutLess where tiles installedge to edge without grout orseam sealer for a uniquely mod-ern look; and GroutFil, anoption of 14 pre-mixed, stain-resistant, acrylic-based groutcolors to create an endlessnumber of pattern and groutpossibilities and also heighten

the mimicry of real stone."The option to include grout

with luxury vinyl tile floorsallows homeowners to combinetile and grout colors in a waythat customizes a look that tiestheir home together," Hubbardsays, adding that grouted LVTfloors are much easier to installthan traditional ceramic tile. They're also more cost efficient,Hubbard notes.

Maintenance for LVT floors, even grouted ones, is minimal.Forget the sealing, polishingand special cleaners requiredfor natural tile floors. Luxuryvinyl tile requires only the use ofa neutral floor cleaner andwater. No harsh chemicals areneeded for the tiles or the grout.

"LVT is a practical choice thatlooks fabulous and stands up toeveryday wear and tear,"Hubbard says. "Combine thatwith its easy installation, greatperformance characteristics andthe fact that it won't break thebudget and you have the per-fect summer DIY project forbeautiful floors."

(ARA) - The average retailprice of electricity for Americanhomeowners has increasednearly 40 percent in the last 10years, according to the U.S.Department of Energy, costinghomeowners hundreds of dol-lars on utility bills.

"With energy costs rising rightalong with demand for electrici-ty, more and more homeownersare looking for ways to saveand are seeking out alternativeenergy sources like solar ener-gy to help cut utility bills," saysVictor Gonzalez-Maertens, ahome cooling expert withLennox, a leading manufacturerof home heating and coolingproducts.

While installing a completeresidential solar energy systemcan be cost-prohibitive formany homeowners, recenttechnology that integrates solarpower with individual house-hold appliances is making iteasier for homeowners to har-ness the power of the sun with-out breaking the bank.

Solar-powered heating and airconditioning

One example is the first-of-its-kind SunSource Home EnergySystem, which was introducedby Lennox this year. It's asolar-powered central heatingand cooling system thatreduces overall household elec-tricity consumption without thecosts associated with traditionalsolar installations.

"More than half of a home'senergy costs go toward heatingand cooling the home, so if youcan use a high-efficiency air

conditioner and solar energy tohelp offset those costs, you canmake a substantial dent in youroverall utility bill," saysGonzalez-Maertens.

The SunSource system isbased on a high-efficiency airconditioner or heat pump thatis solar-ready, which means ahomeowner can add solarmodules to create a solar ener-gy system, if and when theywant one. Gonzalez-Maertenssays the homeowner will beable to reduce the energydemand of their home just withthe high-efficiency equipment, but will be able to save evenmore when they add the solarcomponent.

When the solar component isactivated, the system harness-es solar energy from the sun toreduce the electricity con-sumed by the unit. It also usesthat solar power to operateother devices in the home thatconsume electricity, such aslighting and appliances, whenthe heating and cooling systemis not running. In addition, if theSunSource system generatesmore power than is used by thehome, that power will be sentback to the utility company, which may entitle the home-owner to a credit on their utilitybill.

Solar water heatingAmericans also spend more

than $13 billion a year on ener-gy for household water heating, which accounts for almost aquarter of the total energy usedin a single-family home. Solarwater heating systems, which

feature water storage tanks andsolar collectors, offer thebiggest potential savings tohomeowners, as they can savebetween 50 and 80 percent onwater heating bills.

In addition to solar waterheaters for the home, manyhomeowners are turning tosolar swimming pool heatersthat can save money, extendthe swimming season and givethe owner more control overwater temperature.

Outdoor solar lightingAnother potential area where

homeowners can save withsolar is on landscape lighting.Home improvement stores nowsell outdoor solar lighting sys-tems that are easy to install andoperate at no cost becausethey essentially provide freeelectricity.

These systems use solar cells,

which convert sunlight intoelectricity. The electricity is thenstored in batteries that powerthe lights at night. Some solarlighting systems are self-con-tained units, and only need tobe placed in a sunny location.Others have the lights separatefrom a solar cell panel. In thiscase, only the panel needs tobe placed in a sunny location.

According to Gonzalez-Maertens, these recentadvances toward integratingsolar energy into householdappliances are making it easierthan ever for homeowners totake advantage of renewablesolar energy in an affordablemanner. With Tropical Storm Alex inthe gulf, summer storms arejust around the corner andMother Nature’s wicked ragescan take a toll on your home.Take the steps now to prepareyour house and yard so that itwill stand up to the extremeweather that spring can some-times bring.

Before you begin, look overyour insurance policies tomake sure you’re covered forlosses incurred as the result ofa natural disaster or brutalstorm. Damage caused byflooding, earthquakes and hur-ricanes is generally not cov-ered by your regular homeown-er’s policy, but can be pur-chased separately.

Try to prevent wind and waterfrom entering through win-dows, cracks, entry doors andgarage doors. Especially inhurricane- or tornado-prone

areas it is important to sealyour windows and doors astightly as possible.

High winds can easily tearthrough double doors, Frenchdoors and sliding patio doorsthat have no structural devicebetween them. You may needto purchase and install specialhardware to more adequatelysecure the doors where theymeet. Try bolts that fasten thedoor into the framing at the topand the bottom.

Your home’s roof can shieldits interior from the storm out-side so it is an essential step inpreparing your house to with-stand a severe storm. Applysealing around your chimneyor vent pipes to help preventwater from seeping into yourhome. Hire a contractor tocheck for the structural integrityof the roof system.

Clean out clogged gutters

and downspouts. If the rain thataccompanies a heavy stormcan’t run through the guttersand downspouts, it will spillover the sides, landing in areaswhere it can soak through toyour home’s foundation, caus-ing flooding and structuraldamage.

Outside, protect your homefrom objects that can take flightduring a storm. Remove alldead and dying limbs fromyour trees, and secure lawn fur-niture, trashcans, flowerpotsand other yard ornaments.High-speed winds could trans-form any of these objects intoflying missiles traveling towardyour house. Tie down the larg-er items such as sheds, dog-

houses, playhouses, swingsets, and boats.

When you and your house areprepared, you’re more likely toweather the toughest stormwith less property damage.Taking time now to prepareyour home for storm seasoncould save you a lot of moneylater.

(ARA) - When you think of softwater, the first thing that proba-bly comes to mind is lustrous,easy-to-manage hair. Anotherbenefit is washing clothes insoft water leaves them softerand saves a significant amountof detergent. Best of all, whencleaning, you don't get that uglybathtub ring.

By eliminating hard water min-erals, you can see health andcosmetic benefits, as well asreduce the maintenance costsassociated with scale buildup inhome plumbing.

The water softening process isactually quite simple. Hardwater is passed through a bedof negatively charged ionexchange resin beads whichabsorb and bind positivelycharged hardness ions. Thebeads initially contain sodiumions, which swap over with thehard calcium and magnesiumions. The "harder" the water, themore sodium ions are requiredto soften it. As the resin beadsbecome loaded with hardnessions, they lose their effective-ness and must be regenerated -a process that is accomplishedby passing a sodium chloridesolution through them so thatthey return to their originalstate. Modern water softenershave control devices to mini-mize the amount of waste waterduring regeneration.

Regeneration waste water hascome under environmental criti-cism even though it has notbeen proven to be a problemunder most conditions. Inresponse to these concerns, theWater Quality Association con-tracted the prestigious BattelleInstitute to look at whether ionexchange water softening is aneco-friendly technology able toprovide a reduced carbon foot-print in homes by significantlyincreasing the efficiency of

home heating technologies.Scientific testing focused on

the impact of soft water on thelife and energy use of appli-ances commonly used in U.S.homes, including all types ofwater heaters, washingmachines and dishwashers aswell as plumbing fixtures suchas showerheads and faucets.

The results of the studiesshowed that with softenedwater, all water heaters main-tained 100 percent efficiencyover a simulated 15-year life-time, but with hard water, thegas and electric heater efficien-cy dropped by 25 percent - anincredible loss in energy utiliza-tion. In the case of the newinstant tankless water heaters,on hard water they completelyfailed to function because ofplugged-up scale, or mineralbuild-up associated with hardwater, after only 1.6 years ofsimulated use - about a tenththe normal life of the appliance. In addition, soft water saved

between 40 to 57 percent ofenergy costs compared to tank-less heaters running on hardwater.

When tested on showerheadsand faucets, soft water main-tained a high polish on the fin-ish and a full water flow. Withhard water, showerheads scaledup and lost 75 percent of theirflow rate in less than 18 simulat-ed months and could not main-tain the required flow ratebecause of scaling, which com-pletely plugged the strainersafter 19 days of testing.

Soft water also has been stud-ied for its health aspects. Onereport from the Proceedings ofthe National Academy ofSciences, titled "Opportunisticpathogens enriched in shower-head biofilms," describes thepotential for scaled-up shower-heads to harbor pathogenicmicroorganisms that cause pul-monary problems.

Without scale buildup, these

microorganisms do not have achance to anchor in and grow -they simply get washed away."We conclude that showerheadsmay present a significant poten-tial exposure to aerosolizedmicrobes, including document-ed opportunistic pathogens. The health risk associated withshowerhead microbiota needsinvestigation in persons withcompromised immune or pul-monary systems," concludedthe report.

The net results of the Battellestudy show that by maintaininga high level of efficiency, homewater heaters, faucets, shower-heads and various applianceswill use significantly less ener-gy, resulting in a dramaticallydecreased carbon footprint withsoft water. Appliances will lastlonger, contributing to lesswaste and improved health byeliminating scaled surfaces thatcould harbor pathogenic bacte-ria.
