You’ve worked hardall year and looked for-ward to your summervacation. It is finallyhere! But, you’re con-cerned because you’veheard the horror storiesabout people returninghome to find theirhouse has been burglar-ized and their posses-sions gone. What doyou do to keep thisfrom happening toyou? To help put yourmind at rest so you canrelax and enjoy yourvacation, it will be nec-essary to take some se-curity precautions onyour property. Here area few tips:Secure your home.Statistics show that in
over 40 percent of resi-dential burglaries, thethieves just walked inthrough an unlockeddoor or crawledthrough an unlockedwindow. Be sure youhave locked and boltedall your doors and win-dows before leavinghome.Sliding glass doorsneed special devices tomake them secure. Awooden dowel in thetrack or a nail insertedthrough a hole drilledin the sliding doorframe and projectinginto the fixed framewill secure the door aswell. Commerciallocks are also avail-able.
Double-hung win-dows can be locked bysliding a bolt or nailthrough a hole drilledat a downward angle ineach top corner of theinside sash and partway through the out-side sash. Window keylocks and grilles forbasement or street-level windows areavailable at a homesupply store.Garage doors areharder to secure, so it isimportant to treat theinside door from thegarage into the houselike an outside door.Lock and bolt the in-side door to protect thehouse from intrusion.Explore the possibil-ity of an alarm system. The simplest systemsavailable set up a smallelectrical circuit acrossdoor locks and windowframes. When the cur-rent is interrupted, thealarm sounds. Thereare alarm systems thatalert police of break-
ins and includesmoke andfire alarmsand“help”buttonsfor medicalemergencies.Make your homelook like you are stillthere. With the security pre-cautions above inplace, it is also impor-tant to make your homeappear to be occupied: Leave something out-side to give the appear-ance you are still athome. Gardening tools, children’s toys or awater hose can all givethat impression. Leave your draperiesand blinds open. Put inside and outsidelights, radios and tele-visions on timers setaccording to your nor-mal schedule. The message on yourtelephone answeringmachine should beworded so callers will
not know youare away. You maywant toforwardyourphone
calls to an-other number whileyou are away.Stop your mail andnewspaper deliveries.Continue your lawngrooming service.Make sure shrubs andtrees that cover win-dows and doors aretrimmed so a burglarcannot use them ascover to get into thehouse.Ask for help watch-ing your home.Let your trustedneighbors know youwill be out of town sothey can watch theproperty and “fake” ac-tivity at your home. They can take out thetrash or move the car inthe driveway periodi-cally to give the ap-pearance you are home.
Call the police de-partment to let themknow you will be goneand ask them to patrolthe property. Many po-lice departments willprovide officers to re-view your security planand give suggestionsabout how to prevent aburglary. Before you leave, take a critical look atyour home to see that itis secure and gives noindication you will begone for an extendedperiod. Taking care ofthese details should re-duce your chances ofbeing burglarized. Con-tact your local police orsheriff’s department formore information aboutwhat you can do toprotect your property. (ARA) - In today'senvironmentally con-scious times, it seemswe're surrounded bythe need to shop, actand live "green."Some of our choices
are easy and small, while others can bebig and costly. Butone thing is for sure -each choice can makea significant differ-ence.
Some of the mostimportant greenchoices we can makeare right within ourown home, accordingto Kevin McJoynt atDanze, Inc.
"Installing items likeEnergy Star appli-ances and energy-effi-cient windows is a
great step in movingyour home to be moregreen," says McJoynt."But changing yourin-home water usagecan have the most im-pact."According toMcJoynt, water short-ages, energy demandsand the cost of trans-porting water continueto rise. "Finding waysto simply reduce ourusage without dramat-ically altering ourlifestyle could savebillions of gallons ofwater each year in theUnited States."McJoynt offers upthese tips on how youcan immediately startconserving water (andsave money) in yourhome:* Replace older toi-lets (1992 or earlier)with newer, high effi-ciency toilets (HETs).They operate at 1.28gallons per flush andcould save 11 gallonsof water per toilet perday. Danze has severalnew HETs that outper-form and are morestylish than many toi-lets found in currenthomes.* Be sure to turn offthe tap when brushingyour teeth - it couldsave nearly 3,000 gal-lons of water per year. * Update your bath-rooms with newer Wa-terSense certifiedlavatory faucets. Ac-cording to the Envi-ronmental ProtectionAgency WaterSenseprogram, if everyhousehold in the U.S.installed these water-saving lavatoryfaucets, more than$350 million in waterutility bills and morethan 60 billion gallonsof water annuallywould be saved, plus$600 million in energycosts for heating thewater.* Always turn thewater off betweentasks. Letting yourfaucet run for fiveminutes uses about asmuch energy as lettinga 60-watt light bulbrun for 14 hours.* Make sure to washonly full loads of laun-
dry. Using a high-effi-ciency washing ma-chine is ideal, as theyuse about 28 gallonsof water per load, ver-sus an average ma-chine that uses 41gallons.* Take a showerrather than a bath. Afull bath tub requiresup to 70 gallons ofwater, while taking afive-minute showeruses 10 to 25 gallons.Want to be even moreefficient? Switch yourshowerhead to awater-saving option. "We realize showersare a tricky one whenit comes to savingwater. Homeownerswant to make surethey have a well-per-forming shower expe-rience," says McJoynt."However, the EPAWaterSense programrecently publishedstandards for shower-heads that considerboth conservation andperformance to buildsupport of thesewater-saving units. Besure to look for theWaterSense certifica-tion mark."* Fix those leaks. Most leaky faucetscan waste more than3,000 gallons of watereach year."Better design andengineering of manynew bathroom prod-ucts actually gives theuser improved per-formance as well asefficiency," addsMcJoynt. "Faucets, toilets and shower-heads are great exam-ples. They're just likeother appliances thatuse less energy, butstill work very well."If all the water-sav-ing green choices stillhave you over-whelmed, select onetip at a time and incor-porate it into yourhome. Looking forother tips? Visit theEPA's WaterSensewebsite. For more informa-tion about the per-formance andefficiency of Danzefaucets, showerheadsand toilets, visitwww.danze.com.
