AVALANCHE & SHARKS Tonight is the first of four meetings between the Avalanche and Sharks in 2013-14.  San Jose is the only Pacific Division team that willface the Avs four times this season (the others will all play three games against Colorado).  San Jose is the only Western Conferencefoe who has yet to meet the Avalanche this year.  •   The Avalanche are 40-29-9 in 78 all-time meetings against the Sharks. •   Colorado finished 1-1-1 against San Jose last year, 0-1-1 on the road and 1-0-0 at home. •   Jamie McGinn was a second-round pick of the Sharks in 2006 (36th overall) and played his first four NHL seasons with San Jose. •   Scott Hannan played three-plus seasons with Colorado from 2007-08 to 2010-11. FIRST OF ALL Colorado is 18-1-1 when scoring the first goal (.900), second-best in the NHL behind only Pittsburgh (22-2-0, .917).  The Avalanchebegan the year 17-0-0 when scoring first before losing in a shootout to the Wild on Dec. 14 and then losing in regulation to Dallas onDec. 17. HOLDING A LEAD The Avs are 13-0-0 when leading after the first period, the only NHL team to win every game when leading after 20 minutes.  Coloradois 20-0-1 (.952) when leading after two periods, the most wins of any team when leading after 40 minutes. ROAD WARRIORS Colorado is 11-5-1 (23 points) on the road this season, the club's best record through 17 road games in franchise history.  TheAvalanche began the year a league-best 6-0 away from home, matching their longest road winning streak to begin a season infranchise history.  The 2011-12 team also opened 6-0.  The Avs didn't suffer their first road defeat until Nov. 12 at Carolina, nearly sixweeks into the 2013-14 season.  Colorado's 6-0 run fell one shy of equaling the franchise's longest road winning streak at any point of aseason (7 games, Jan. 10 to Feb. 7, 1999). EXTRA CREDIT The Avs are 5-2 in games that go beyond regulation, 3-0 in overtime and 2-2 in shootouts.  As a team, Colorado has gone 4-for-11(36.4%) in shootouts this year, while Semyon Varlamov has stopped 7-of-10 attempts (.700%).  All-time, the Avs are 50-29 inshootouts, 19-13 at home and 31-16 on the road.  Colorado has scored on 38.5% of its all-time attempts (106/275), the highestpercentage in shootout history.  Varlamov is 15-9 all-time in shootouts, stopping .765 percent (81 shots, 19 goals).  Varly's .765shootout save percentage ranks third in NHL history behind only Marc Denis (.854) and Marc-Andre Fleury (.773). JIGGY SETS FRANCHISE MARK FOR BEST START BY A GOALIE Jean-Sebastien Giguere opened the year 7-0, becoming the first goaltender in franchise history to start a season 7-0.  Giguere's seven-game winning streak was a new career best, topping his previous high of six consecutive wins done twice before.  Jiggy was the firstAvalanche goaltender to win seven straight games since Andrew Raycroft from Nov 29, 2008 to Jan 10, 2009. YOUNGEST CAPTAIN Gabriel Landeskog, 21, is the youngest current captain in the league.  Landeskog was named team captain on Sept. 4, 2012, becomingthe youngest captain in NHL history (19 years, 286 days).  He was 11 days younger than Sidney Crosby, who was 19 years, 297 dayswhen he was named captain of the Penguins on May 31, 2007. RECORD START BEHIND THE BENCH Patrick Roy led the Avalanche to a 6-0-0 start, tying the NHL record for consecutive wins by a head coach to begin his career.  MarioTremblay also won his first six games with the Canadiens in 1995-96.  Roy went on to become the first coach in NHL history to win 14of his first 16 career games and one of only two coaches in league history to win 12 of his first 13 (Marc Crawford, Quebec, 1994-95). Roy posted 15 wins in his first 20 games behind the bench, tying Dan Bylsma (15-2-3) for the second-most wins among active coachesthrough their first 20 career games.  Only Todd McLellan (16-3-1) won more.  The Roy-led Avalanche were the fastest team to reach 20wins in franchise history (27th game) and matched the club record for most wins (21) through the first 30 games of a season. FAST START A look at the Avalanche's hot start to the season... •   Opened the season 6-0, by far the club's best start since the team moved to Denver in 1995 and one shy of the franchise record (7-0     in 1985-86). •   Each of Colorado's six wins and each of San Jose's first six victories this year came in regulation, the first NHL teams to begin a     season with six consecutive regulation victories since the 1996-97 Dallas Stars. •   12-1-0 record in the first 13 games, becoming one of only five teams in NHL history to win 12 of their first 13 contests (2007-08     Senators, 2005-06 Red Wings, 1994-95 Nordiques and Penguins). •   10-1-0 in October (.909), the best points percentage of any month in franchise history (min 10 GP).  The 10 victories matched the     franchise record for wins in the month of October (10-2-2 in 2009). •   9-5-0 in November, matching their most wins in the month of November in franchise history (9-3-2-1 in 2003-04).
