Another Hatty – Saturday’s three-goal performance marked Ovechkin’s 24th career hat trick. Ovechkin passed Jari Kurri (23) for the
10th most hat tricks in NHL history and became the 15th player in NHL history to score at least two empty net goals in a game, as
well as the sixth player in NHL history to complete a hat trick with two empty net goals. Additionally, Ovechkin’s hat trick marked his
fifth multi-goal game of the season and the 137th of his career, leaving him two shy of tying Marcel Dionne (139) for the sixth-most
multi-goal games in NHL history.
Consistent Threat – Ovechkin has recorded a point in 18 of his last 24 games (19g, 10a). The Capitals are 13-3-3 this season when
Ovechkin records a point. On pace for 58 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is looking to become the second
player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of
35). Nine players in NHL history have recorded at least 40 goals at the age of 34 or older. Ovechkin has scored 15 of his 20 goals
this season on the road, and is one road goal shy of tying Marcel Dionne (346) for the sixth-most road goals in NHL history. TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Two Months In – The Capitals enter December with 19-4-5 record, tied with the Boston Bruins for the most points (43) in the NHL. TheCapitals’ four regulation losses mark the fewest in franchise history through October and November (previous record, five in 2009-10and 2015-16). With a 10-2-2 record in November, the Capitals tied a franchise record for the highest point percentage in the respectivemonth (2010-11: 10-2-2, .786 point percentage). Additionally, the Capitals’ 19 wins in 28 games are the third-fewest games the Capitalshave needed to reach the mark in franchise history (2015-16: 26 games; 1991-92: 27 games). The Capitals opponents this seasonhave a combined 300-209-85 record, the seventh-highest opponent point percentage in the NHL (.577) and the second-most wins(Anaheim opponents: 324 wins). Offensively, the Capitals’ 101 goals this season lead the NHL, and they are the seventh team in thelast 25 years to reach triple-digits in goals before the beginning of December (including shootout-deciding goals). The Capitals alsoreached the 100-goal mark through games played Nov. 30 for the second time in franchise history (1991-92: 120 goals). Willy Makes 5 – Tom Wilson scored his 10th goal of the season against Detroit on Saturday, becoming the fifth Capitals player toreach double digits in goals. The Capitals are the only team in the NHL with five players who have scored 10 or more goals (AlexOvechkin: 20; Jakub Vrana: 12; T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov: 11; Wilson: 10). As of games played through Dec. 1, only two teams(Colorado, Florida) have four players with 10 or more goals, while five teams (Buffalo, Carolina, Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver) havethree players with 10 or more goals. Last season, the Capitals were tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets with the most players with atleast 20 goals (Alex Ovechkin: 51; T.J. Oshie: 25; Jakub Vrana: 24; Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstrom and Brett Connolly: 22; EvgenyKuznetsov: 21), however, Washington was the only team that did not acquire any of their 20 goal scorers via trade at some point lastseason. This season, the Capitals have six players on pace to score 20 or more goals. Holtbeast - Braden Holtby's 13 wins this season are tied for first in the NHL and his two regulation losses are the tied for the fewestamong goaltenders with at least 10 wins. Holtby has earned a point in 14 of his last 15 games and 17 of his 20 games played thisseason.
Mr. November - Holtby went 8-1-1, with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage in November, his lowest goals-
against average in a single calendar month since February 2017 (1.87 goals against average) and his highest save percentage in a
single calendar month since November 2018 (.935 save percentage). In 80 career games in November, Holtby is 53-21-6 with a 2.36
goals-against average and a .923 save percentage, his second-lowest goals against average and second-highest save percentage in
a calendar month (April).
Winner - Holtby is currently tied with Gilles Meloche for 48th place on the NHL's all-time wins list (270), and has reached that mark in
440 games. Among the goaltenders that rank in the top 50 in wins in NHL history, Holtby is the only goaltender to play in fewer than
500 career games and ranks first in win percentage (.614). Holtby ranks ninth among active goaltenders in wins. Top D - John Carlson leads all NHL defensemen in goals, assists and points this season and ranks third in the NHL in assists. Carlson(8g, 29a in 28 games) has recorded a point in nine of his last 12 games (1g, 13a) and 21 of his 28 games this season, including aseparate nine and eight game point streak (nine games: Oct. 8 through 24, 5g, 13a; eight games: Nov. 7 through 20, 1g, 12a). In
•
addition, Carlson has recorded 11 multi-point games.
Torrid Pace - With 37 points in 28 games, Carlson is on pace for 108 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL
history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and
Brian Leetch: each once). The Capitals' franchise record for points in a season by a defenseman is 81 points (Larry Murphy, 1986-
87: 23g, 58a). Nice and Kuzy – In the month of November, Evgeny Kuznetsov led the Capitals with 19 points (6g, 13a) and ranked eighth in the NHL.Kuznetsov recorded a point in 11 of the Capitals’ 14 games, including six multi-point efforts, which led the Capitals. On pace for 34goals and 88 points, Kuznetsov is aiming to reach the 30 goal mark for the first time in his career and set a new career high in points(2017-18: 27g, 56a, 83 points). Kuznetsov would become the ninth center in franchise history to reach the 30-goal mark and the firstsince Nicklas Backstrom in 2009-10. QUICK HITS Young V – Jakub Vrana extended his point streak to four games (2g, 3a) with an assist against Detroit. This season, Vrana’s 12 goalsrank second on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 20). All 12 of Vrana’s goals have come at even strength, which is tied for the fourth-mostin the NHL. O Canada – Capitals prospect and 2019 first round pick Connor McMichael was one of 31 players named to Hockey Canada's NationalJunior Team Selection Camp on Monday. McMichael's 56 points (25g, 31a) in 24 games this season leads the OHL. McMichael couldbecome the first Capitals prospect to represent Canada at the World Junior Championship since Madison Bowey in 2015. Versus OpponentVersus San Jose - Alex Ovechkin has registered 20 points (12g, 8a) in 20 career games against the Sharks, including six points (4g,2a) in two games against San Jose last season. Nicklas Backstrom has earned 14 points (2g, 12a) in 16 career games against theSharks and has tallied nine assists in his last nine games against San Jose.
