Global deliveries increased by 19%, to 7,786 cars, up from 6,516 cars in the same period in 2013. Bentley's four key regions, Americas, China, Europe including the UK, and Middle East all saw strong performance, with the Americas retaining its position as Bentley's number one market, but with China posting strong growth to close the gap. New models drove this international success, with the Continental GT V8 S coupe and convertible and Flying Spur V8 entering the market. Commenting on the results, Bentley's Member of the Board for Sales, Mar- keting and Aftersales, Kevin Rose, said: "We said at the start of the year that 2014 would be a record breaking year for Bentley and we are firmly on track to deliver on our promise. Certain markets are tough, as other luxury car brands can testify, but with our three model lines delivering a perfect blend of luxury and performance, alongside the international appeal that we have as a brand, it will ensure 2014 will go down as our best ever year." Remaining in Bentley's number one position, the Americas delivered 2,107 cars, 4% up on the first nine months of the 2013 performance of 2,022 cars. Bentley's sales in China remained solid in a less than buoyant market. 1,959 cars were delivered in the first nine months of 2014, against 1,264 cars in 2013. A strong German market continued helping Europe to post a sales increase of 7%. 1,155 cars were delivered, in comparison to 1,081 cars in 2013. UK deliveries also increased, by 5%. Rising from 1,055 cars in 2013, 1,113 cars were delivered. Significant sales growth in the Middle East continued, a 21% improvement on 2013 (596 cars), with 720 cars delivered. Deliveries in the Middle East have now more than doubled in the past three years. These results were reinforced in Asia Pacific, with 468 cars delivered, a 49% rise on the 2013 figure of 315 cars. While in Japan, 207 cars were delivered, a 46% growth on 2013, 142 cars. 2013 was Bentley's previous record year, posting the highest deliv- ery, turnover and profit figures in the company's 95-year history. The decrease mostly reversed the gains recorded for June and July. In August, about half of the decrease was caused by lower sales of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Excluding motor vehicles and parts, sales declined 1.9%. Overall, 16 of 21 industries repre- senting about 81% of the manufacturing sector posted declines. Constant dollar sales decreased 3.7%, indicating that a lower volume of products was sold. Sales decline in the transportation equipment industry Transportation equipment sales fell 12.8% to $8.9 billion in August, mostly as a result of lower sales of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. In the motor vehicle industry, sales decreased 12.0% to $4.5 billion. The decline followed stronger than usual sales in July (+13.7%). Unadjusted sales in August, on a year-to-date basis, were 3.5% higher than the same period last year. Sales in the motor vehicle parts industry were down 10.8% to $2.0 billion in August. The decline was the second in eight months. Other transportation equipment sales were down 40.6% to $274 mil- lion in August, giving back most of the 43.6% gain in July. Sales in this industry are volatile compared with sales for the transportation equip- ment industry as a whole. Petroleum and coal product sales declined 3.4% to $7.3 billion, mostly as a result of lower volumes of product sold. Sales decrease in seven provinces Sales were down in seven provinces in August, with the bulk of the decrease concentrated in Ontario. Manufacturing sales in Ontario declined 4.6% to $23.9 billion, essen- tially reversing the 4.8% advance in July. Declines in the transporta- tion equipment industry were the main cause of the sales drop in the province in August. In particular, sales in the motor vehicle (-12.4%), motor vehicle parts (-11.1%) and aerospace product and parts (- 28.5%) industries were lower. The manufacturing sector in Quebec declined 1.6% to $12.1 billion in August, following three months of gains. The transportation equip- ment and the petroleum and coal product industries were the main contributors to the decrease. Manufacturing sales in Alberta decreased 2.8% to $6.7 billion. CONTD. FROM PAGE 25Sales in Manitoba declined 9.9% to $1.3 billion in August, following a14.3% gain in July. The decrease was largely attributable to lowersales in the primary metal and transpor tation equipment industries.Inventories declineTotal inventories decreased 0.6% to $71.3 billion in August, the sec-ond decline in eight months. The decrease was caused primarily bylower inventories in the petroleum and coal product industry, whichdeclined 8.6% to $7.0 billion. Most of the decrease stemmed fromlower raw materials held at petroleum refineries. Higher inventoriesin the primary metal industry offset some of the decline. The inventory-to-sales ratio rose from 1.33 in July to 1.37 in August. The inventory-to-sales ratio measures the time, in months, that would

Total un-filled orders have been relatively stable over the past six months, after rising 15.3% in February 2014. In August, lower unfilled orders inthe primary metal (-6.2%) and machinery (-1.4%) industries weremostly offset by a 0.3% gain in the transportation equipment industry.New orders were down 3.8% to $52.0 billion in August. About half ofthe decline was attributable to a decrease in the transpor tation equip-ment industry. New orders were also down in the petroleum and coalproduct, primary metal, machinery, and the computer and electronicproduct industries.

Why stress makes people grumpyNEW YORK, (IANS)

Why is it that when people aretoo stressed they are of tengrouchy, gr umpy, nasty, dis-tracted or forgetful? Researchershave now discovered the mecha-nism that explains the relation-ship between chronic stress andthe loss of social skills and cog-nitive impairment. When triggered by stress, an en-zyme attacks a synaptic regula-tory molecule in the brain, lead-ing to behavioural problems, thefindings showed."The identification of this mecha-nism is impor tant because it sug-gests potential treatments for neu-ropsychiatric disorders related tochronic stress, par ticularly de-pression," said co-researcherCarmen Sandi from Brain MindInstitute (BMI) at Swiss FederalInst i tute of Technology inLausanne, Switzerland. For the study, researchers stud-ied a region of the hippocampusknown for i ts involvement inbehaviour and cognitive skills. In there, scientists were inter-ested in a molecule, the nectin-3cell adhesion protein, whose roleis to ensure adherence, at thesynaptic level, between two neu-rons.Positioned in the postsynaptic

par t, these proteins bind to themolecules of the presynapticpor tion, thus ensuring the synap-tic function. However, the researchers foundthat on rat models affected bychronic stress, nectin-3 mol-ecules were significantly reducedin number. The investigations conducted bythe researchers led them to anenzyme involved in the process

of protein degradation: MMP-9.It was already known that chronicstress causes a massive releaseof glutamate, a molecule that actson NMDA receptors, which areessential for synaptic plasticityand thus for memory. What these researchers foundnow is that these receptors acti-vated the MMP-9 enzymeswhich, like scissors, literally cutthe nectin-3 cell adhesion pro-

teins."When this happens, nectin-3 be-comes unable to perform its roleas a modulator of synaptic plas-ticity" Sandi explained. In turn, these effects lead subjectsto lose their sociability, avoid in-teractions with their peers andhave impaired memory or under-standing.The study appeared in the journalNature Communications.

SUFFERING FROM BIPOLAR DISORDER? PRACTICE YOGAYoga practice may yield significant mental health benefits for people withbipolar disorder, a survey study suggests. Also known as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder refers to a braincondition that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels andthe ability to carry out day-to-day tasks."Some individuals with bipolar disorder believe that yoga has had a signifi-cant positive impact on their life," said co-researcher Lisa Uebelackerfrom Brown University in the US.For the study, the researchers recruited 109 individuals who identifiedthemselves as having bipolar disorder and as being yoga practitioners.Of 86 individuals with useable responses, 70 had positive results on ascreening questionnaire for manic symptoms.Participants reported practicing yoga for an average of six years; they

attended a yoga class twice a week and practised yoga at home threetimes every week, on average. Most participants believed that yoga had benefits for their mental health.Two-thirds said that yoga positively affected their depressive and manicsymptoms. They also reported positive emotional effects of yoga, such asreduced anxiety and worry; positive cognitive effects, especially in terms ofincreased mindfulness; and positive physical effects, such as weight loss, increased energy, and improved sleep.Fifteen respondents said that yoga had been significantly life-changing.However, yoga is not without risks - including potential worsening of symp-toms related to bipolar disorder, the researchers noted.About one-fourth of respondents reported some type of negative effectsrelated to yoga.

Obesity a leading cause of liver damageBY SHWETA SHARMA (IANS)

Little did 52-year-old Sheila Joshi (name changed), suffering fromobesity-related uncontrolled diabetes know that her condition wasleading to a damaged liver.Joshi is not the only one, say health exper ts, adding that Indianslargely remain unaware of the condition and wake up to it verylate." Indians are of the primit ive ideology that l iver diseases aremainly a problem of the alcoholic population and does not easilyaffect non-drinkers. But recent studies and awareness of Non Al-coholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) clearly state that this dis-ease is not only linked with drinking alcohol," Tarun Mittal, gen-eral surgeon, Laproscopic, Robotic and Bariatic surgeon, SirGanga Ram Hospital, told IANS.Explaining the causes, Vikas Singhal, executive consultant, mini-mal access surgery, Gastroenteritis and Bariatric surgery, JaypeeHospital, Noida told IANS: "Obesity and diabetes are major riskfactors for NAFLD. In fact, NAFLD is so closely associated withobesity and diabetes, it can be used as a marker for patients whoare at risk of developing diabetes, hear t disease and stroke in thefuture if they do not star t taking preventive measures early."Agreed Mittal who said the other reasons are malnutrition, preg-nancy related acute fatty liver, drugs, toxins and some other in-flammatory bowel diseases and even HIV and Hepati-tis C.Accord ing to P radeepChowbey, vice chairman,Max Healthcare and di-rector, minimal ac-cess , me tabo l i cand ba r i a t r i csurgeon, fattyl i ve r d i s -ease a reoften di-

However, NAFLD, if not managed prop-erly, specially associated with obesity can lead to very seriousliver problems known as nonalcoholic steatohepatisis (NASH).The liver may enlarge and, over time, liver cells may be replacedby scar tissue," Chowbey told IANS.Health exper ts said that an enlarged liver due to fat deposition isbeing diagnosed incidentally in 30 to 40 percent of ultrasoundscans done for other reasons. It usually star ts in middle age butnow has even been noted in children. They add that in around 10 to 15 percent patients it progresses tofur ther stages of liver damage ranging from Non Alcoholic Steato-Hepatitis (NASH) - which is essentially inflammation of the liver- subsequently fibrosis (scarring) and eventually cirrhosis. So, how can the condition be best treated?"Regular exercise, brisk walk, proper control of diabetes and obe-sity are some measures. and nonalchoholic steatohepatitis is weight reduction."Bariatric surgery is accepted as a treatment for obesity andresults in better control of metabolic factors, including diabe-tes, than does medical therapy alone," Ashish Bhanot, seniorbariatric surgeon, Nova Specialty Hospital, told IANS.Chowbey added that "in severely obese people with fatty liverdisease, endosurgery (minimally invasive surgery) is the onlytreatment known for cure"."The treatment is change in dietary habits and exercise be-fore irreversible l iver damage. Weight loss with a healthydiet high in protein and low in carbohydrate and fats is thekey."Adequate management of diabetes, hyper tension are otherfactors. Stopping alcohol is also a must as alcohol can com-pound l iver damage. For pat ients who meet cr i ter ia forbariatric and metabolic surgery, bariatric surgery has beenseen to cure NASH in over 80 percent of patients," said Singhal.Suggesting precautionary measures, he said a healthy diet, which is high in proteins, low in carbohydrates and fats."Eat raw fruits. Avoid fruit juices, coke, pepsi and other sug-ary drinks. Eat three healthy meals and two healthy snacks inbetween. Reduced alcohol consumption not more than one totwo drinks, no more than once or twice a month. Exercisedaily for minimum 60 minutes. It doesn't have to be done atone sitting," he said.
