26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”-Mother Teresa

I can’t help but feel that the world lately is longing for real connection and community. I’m not one to bemoan the evils of social media and technology, but I do see daily evidence of people using Facebook and Instagram in futile attempts at connection that remain at the surface level of selfies and memes, even if they do often make me laugh (and re-share, of course). I also see evidence of authentic community in the digital world--stories that go viral and get shared far beyond what they might by word of mouth, important happenings in the world that get buried by the lightning-quick news cycle, but deserve more attention. I think humanity always has and always will have a deep need to connect with one another and to exist within networks where we care for one another, even if we often have funny ways of showing it.

Jesus’s words in the Gospel that instruct us now to cause others to stumble reflect this emphasis on humans as social creatures. Our vocation and our baptismal call is to lift one another up, to promote the image of God present in every single person; not to incite sin in order to make ourselves look better.

And for Catholics, what exactly does authentic community look like? Well, the U.S. Bishops’ landmark document Economic Justice for All states that:  “the deprivation and powerlessness of the poor wounds the whole community. The extent of their  suffering is a measure of how far we are from being a true community of persons.” (88) In other words, the litmus test for how close our own communities come to the example of Jesus is how the most vulnerable members are faring.

By the time you read this, the chaos of the current Supreme Court hearing may well be past, but it put on display just how far off-course our standards for community and care have gone. Any world in which victims of sexual assault are seen as political pawns or any community in which brotherhood means “what happens here stays here” is far from the Gospel call of authentic community. It is the same toxicity which allowed for the coverups of sexual abuse in the church, that did not look out for the “little ones” whom Jesus cares for in the Gospel today.

I’m proud to be part of a community that works hard to care for its members--whether through fellowship at our picnic and BBQ, through the women’s group who meet for spiritual companionship, our bereavement ministry so thoughtfully run by Alberta Baccari, the homebound visits to those who cannot make it out, Fr. Matt’s homilies that constantly exhort us to push ourselves in service to Christ, the Mother Teresa group working constantly to feed and clothe those in need, and Rachael’s team of Faith Formation stewards leading our youngest to greater faith.  We really do all belong to one another and our work for authentic community that lifts others up rather than tears them down feels more important now than ever. -Angie

Sunday ~ September 30, 2018

As September is coming to an end students and teachers have settled into a routine for the 2018-19 school year. Fall sessions of co-curricular activities have also begun including the election of our Student Council this past week. Pupils campaigned during election week and I want to congratulate all of our candidates for having the courage to run for office and give a speech to their classmates. A special congratulations to our winners and thanks to Mr. Sean McBride and Ms. Naomi Viera who in addition to teaching their respective classes also serve as the Student Council Moderators for the Middle School.

While Student Council has held its first official meeting, our Chorus has been busy rehearsing after school. This weekend they are singing at a Providence Bruins game at the Dunk. We have many more exciting events planned for our Chorus this fall including singing at a Providence College Hockey game next month and at the State House in early December. None of this would be possible without the leadership of our Chorus Director Mrs. Lorraine Gagnon and I want to thank her for the extra time she gives to the Chorus program.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a leader in such a wonderful community, which is led by Father Matt and filled with so many fine students, dedicated faculty, and supportive parents and parishioners.

Classes are off to a great start! Last Sunday was our first week of Faith Formation for our K-grade 5 program and it was wonderful to see everyone again. We have a lot of new face and I would like to welcome everyone to this 2018-2019 year and hope that within this year you all grow in your faith.

Next Sunday October 7th there is No classes due to the Columbus Day weekend. Enjoy the time with your family and friends. My family and I will be heading to NH to visit relatives and hopefully pick some apples!

When we return on October 14th we will have our first Children’s Mass hosted by Grade 5. Letters to parents will go out today to notify you of the role your child will service in the Mass. Please let me know as soon as possible if they are not able to attend the Mass so we can find a replacement.

On October 14th our Grades 6-10 classes will meet again at 3:30. Please remember that 5:00 pm Mass is part of the program and the students will be attending as a class. If your family is also attending, you do have the option of your child sitting with their family if you wish. Classes will be dismissed from the church. We hope that families join us for this Mass. Like of Children’s Mass the students will be serving at this Mass.

Consider Fulfilling Your Baptismal Promise: We are in need of some more people to run discussion groups in our Grades 6-10 program. If you have made your Confirmation, then you can join us. Please consider this wonderful opportunity to help our youth strengthen their faith while living out your baptismal promise.

If you are interested in being part of our young people’s faith journey in any way, please consider helping with Faith Formation or Liturgy of the Word. Please consider joining the many that already guide our youth in their faith. Let this be the way you share your time and talent with the youth in our parish and become a part of their journey in faith.

It is not just the adults that can offer their Time and Talents our older Youth are also invited to join us! Please consider sharing your time and talent with the younger youth of the Parish.
