Dear Parishioners,
It’s good to be back. Many thanks to Father Bernie Danber for substituting
last Sunday. Father is having some difficulty in getting around these days,
due to a hip replacement. Sometimes things can get quite difficult for him.
Anyway, I had a very nice time last weekend visiting my friend Monsignor
Schaedel. I also had the good fortune to celebrate the High Mass at my old
parish, Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. It was so good to be back in that
beautiful church and to see many very good friends. Still, I also know that
my place is here with you, first and foremost. I include Naperville too, but,
primarily, my place is here at St. Joseph. I know you get the point. We
cannot live in the past. I am yours and you are mine. I, for one, am very
happy and grateful for that.
We are now in that “mini” liturgical season known as Ascensiontide.
Concurrently, Ascensiontide is also traditionally regarded as the first
“novena.” After Our Lord’s Ascension into Heaven, the Apostles retreated
to the “upper room” to await the coming of the Holy Spirit.
So, this novena would extend from the day after the Ascension through the
time of “First Vespers” of Pentecost. Technically, when I refer to the ‘day
after’ the Ascension, I must point out that that day began, as you might have
guessed by now, at the time of Vespers of the Ascension, i.e., early evening
of what we would regard as Ascension Thursday.
We must remember, that for the Hebrews, and yes, for us, the day extends
from Vespers to Vespers, not from midnight to midnight or dawn to dawn.
So, the novena extends from Vespers of the Ascension through to “First
Vespers” of Pentecost (early Saturday evening), i.e., when Pentecost
actually begins.
Yikes, all this talk about seemingly petty stuff. Well, we, as Catholics
should never regard what Holy Mother Church does, says or establishes as
“petty.” God bless you, my children and my friends.
