2nd Sunday of Lent: February 21 That we be good stewards of the earth and our environment and wisely use its natural resources. “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the

Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.”(Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home?

Our Social Ministry Collection

2015 Bazaar Results

The 2015 Bazaar results and notes of thanks were issued in a flyer on the weekend of January 30-31. Our Bazaar was very successful. We had beautiful weather and great attend-ance. We had total income of $112,230.91 and total expens-es of $56,276.65. Our net profit was $55,954.26. This great weekend assisted us in eliminating our debt! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, ate, played and had fun!

2015 Contribution

Statements During the last few months, our office has encountered

technical difficulties with our computer sys-tem. We have resolved most of the issues. Unfortunately, this has caused us to become quite behind in the posting of our contribu-tions. Please know that we are working dili-gently to get this task completed. As soon as we get the Contribution Statements com-pleted, we will make an announcement at Mass, in the Bulletin and through One Call Now. We will offer statements to be picked up or emailed for those wishing not to wait for them to be mailed. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to get this accomplished. Thank you!

We’re going on an unexpected journey this Lent. It’s not what you had in mind. People associate Lent with “giving things up,” but we’re going to offer a unique kind of sacrifice. It’s central to how Jesus prodded people to deeper growth and spiritual purification. It’s central to every disciple’s personal exodus from self-centered to Christ-centered. Let’s begin: Stop. Quiet your heart. Call the people to mind who God has placed in your life who need to know his love. (That’s God placing them on your mind.) Now spend a minute asking God to bless them, break into their lives with the light and hope that only he can bring, and asking him to open doors for you and others to share the Good News with that person. Throughout this Lent, every day, commit to saying a short prayer and offering some small sacrifice for the people you just lifted up to God.

2015 Social Ministry Report Our Parish is generous enough to sponsor a Social Ministry which includes a Thrift Store and a Food Pantry. The Thrift Store accepts donations of clothing and household items for us to sell. These items are often sold at reduced prices so the less fortunate in our area can buy items they need. Our Social Ministry also offers vouchers for people in real need and no resources. Sometimes these people come directly to the Social Ministry and other times they are referred to us by other agencies that we work with. The Food Pantry is supported by donations from parishioners, area churches, stores and organizations. Our Food Pantry feeds people who might otherwise go hungry. Now for the numbers! In 2015, the Food Pantry received 113,373 pounds of food! Kroger gave 4,475 pounds (this is not from the Community Rewards Program); 87, 113 came from the Houston Food Bank which is funded by donors; 3,262 pounds are from walk-in donations; 12,603 pounds are from area food drives; 3,328 pounds are from food collected at Sacred Heart and 2,592 pounds come from individual donors. The Food Pantry served a total of 5,218 people in 2015. Of that total, 1,744 were age infant to 17; 2,708 were age 18-64 and 766 were age 65 and older. The Food Pantry saw an increase of 705 individuals served over the prior year. The Social Ministry gave vouchers in total of $408.50 for the year. People were able to use those vouchers to purchase items they need from the Thrift Store. Sales from Thrift Store donations totaled $37,692.98 which is up slightly from 2014. Proceeds from these sales assist us in paying the expenses of the Social Ministry along with our monthly Social Ministry collections and weekly collections. We currently have 2 full time employees at our Social Ministry who are assisted by volunteers. Please feel free to stop by our Social Ministry which is located at 14307 Hwy. 6, just East of FM 521. They are open Tuesday through Friday 10 am until noon and reopen after lunch at 1 pm until 3 pm. They are also open the first Saturday of the month from 10 am until 3 pm. Thank you so much for supporting our Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Community Social Ministry with your donations of goods, monthly second collection contributions and weekly contributions! These generous donations assist us in fulfilling our Parish Mission.
