The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have put out a prayer during this time of pandemic. It is calling on Our Lady of Guadalupe to intercede for us.
Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.
Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted,we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance.Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.
In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.
We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Fifth Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020
A Note from Fr. Sean,
Unprecedented
Unprecedented. This is a word that we have heard a lot lately, and it is a scary word. Why?
“Unprecedented” means that nobody who is alive today has experienced what we are experiencing
right now, and even looking back at history is not as much of a help for us because even though
the world has faced pandemics before, we have never been as interconnected and interdependent upon one another as
we are now, and I mean the whole world- nations relying upon other nations, the speed at which information - and
contagion - spreads, the sheer number of people alive all at once, all moving around at great speed and then suddenly
stopped. Unprecedented.
As I write this on March 20 the state of the pandemic is one thing, and by the time you read it the state of things will
be something else, and it will have been something else before that. Unprecedented. Again, that word is anxiety
provoking, because it means we are vulnerable- we have nothing to compare the current situation with and so we are
more subject to error, to confusion, and to our own humanity and faced with our own mortality.
What is even more striking than the government dealing with something new, is that the Catholic Church is dealing
with something new. As a Church history buff, I have always taken a certain comfort in knowing that “the Church has
been here before,” wherever that may be, but now even our 2,000 year-old institution is venturing into new territory.
The Church has dealt with plagues before, cancellation of Masses, closures of Churches, and death, but not like this,
not the whole world all at once coming to a halt. Unprecedented.
As we speak, the pope and bishops are adjusting to the circumstances, using the mechanisms of the Church to
address the needs of the moment and exhibiting the reality that the Church is more flexible than we realize. We can
still take some solace that we, as a Church, have been here before, and yet not, because we can search the collective
wisdom of the past to see how we dealt with similar things before, and then imitate that example. What I am talking
about is the virtue, the faith, the God-given stuff of heroism and human resilience that the saints exhibit.
This is a time for saints. This is a time for witness to faith. While we may be limited as to what we can do given the
constraints of closures and cancellations, we can still BE. We can still exist and live as people of faith, and especially
because we are vulnerable, especially because we don’t know what will happen next, and especially because we have
to be obedient for the sake of the common good; for this we can be saints.
The thing about life is that it is all unprecedented because each one of us is experiencing each day anew, uncertain
of what will happen next. Perhaps for most of us, we had our routines and we thought we were safe from the
unprecedented things of life, but the pandemic is teaching us now that life is more precarious - and more precious -
than we ever thought before. Our mortality is indeed before us. Let us live each unprecedented day to the fullest, one
day at a time.
Yours in Christ,
