To conclude, something to ponder as Christmas approaches: CHRISTMAS by Michael Leunig I see a twinkle in your eye So this shall be my Christmas star And I will travel to your heart The manger where the real things are And I will find a mother there Who holds you gently to her breast A father to protect your peace And by these things you shall be blessed And you will always be reborn And I will always see the star And make the journey to your heart The manger where the real things are The manger where the real things are Our heartfelt blessings to all for the Christmas season! MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School As we now are at the end of the academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the MANY achievements of both students and staff, as well as thank them for their fine efforts throughout 2017. There are many facets that make our school and community such a great place, and like any successful team, it relies on all members playing their part and supporting each other. I am truly grateful for the support I personally receive from our wonderful staff and hope they have a well-earned Christmas break, enjoying the company of family and friends.

Staffing news and updates:

• Deb King has provided 10 years of outstanding service to our Middle School community. In this time she has also performed admirably in several leadership positions, including her current role as Year 9 Leader of Learning and Teaching. Deb has won a position at Prince Alfred College and will be leaving the Middle School at the end of this year. This is an exciting opportunity for her as she will be teaching English to both middle and senior classes. All the best Deb, You will be sorely missed.

• Siobhan Brophy, our Student Counsellor will also be leaving the Middle School and returning to her home of Brisbane due to family and employment commitments. Although only with us for a short time, Siobhan has certainly left her mark in terms of her professionalism, commitment to the wellbeing of students and her deep understanding of child protection issues. We wish Siobhan all the best and thank her for her contribution to the College.

• Alice Tonkin will be taking all of next year on maternity leave. Alice is expecting the arrival of their second child in early March - an exciting time for Alice and her family!

• Tom Cross has secured a more permanent teaching position at Immanuel College and we wish him all the best in his new role.

• Ashley Jenner will be taking long service leave in Term 1 next year. All the best Ash. • Natasha Williams, our Director of Teaching and Learning, will be taking leave for 2018. I wish Natasha all the best

in her coming ventures. As publicised recently, Shana Bennett commences her role as Assistant Principal – Champagnat Project next year while I take leave for Term 1. New staff joining the school in 2017 include: Tom Jordan (currently at Caritas College, Pt Augusta), Jay Pozniak (currently at Cabra College), and Krystle Peyton (currently at Tatachilla College). The new staff members will be formally introduced to parents/caregivers and students at the beginning of the year. I would like to conclude by thanking the students of Sacred Heart College Middle School - for the most part they are fine examples of young boys living Marcellin's dream and hope that one day too, they will "go out to the villages and hamlets and show others how much God loves them". Have a spirit filled and safe Christmas! Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Vinnies Christmas Appeal Yesterday, volunteers from Vinnies Brighton, Seacombe Gardens and St Mary’s collected three car boots full of donated gifts from our community for the St Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Donations included Christmas decorations, bonbons, soccer and basketball balls, cricket sets, jigsaw puzzles, books, board games, stationery, colouring-in and activity books, clothes, Lego, movie vouchers and much more. Year 7 students, Daniel Mayer, Jock Murphy and Darcy Kelsey and were just three of many students who contributed towards the donations. The Year 6 Marist Captains helped load the cars of the Vinnies volunteers. Throughout Term 4 we put a call out to our community to consider other families who struggle to make ends meet. The St Vincent De Paul Society (Vinnies) provides Christmas presents to children who would otherwise go without through the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Every year this organisation struggles to supply gifts for boys aged between 11 and 16, so we put the call out to our boys to buy a present they themselves would like. Chances are if they liked the present, other boys would like it too. At last count, our campus collected more than 124 gifts and more than $1059.70 in cash donations! Thank you to Year 9 students, Ben Clements, Lachlan Hocking and Eric Reddy for counting the gifts. Half of this money was used to buy more gifts for boys. Year 8 Marist Captains, Bailey Giles, Cooper Giles and Benjamin Mieszuc enjoyed an afternoon shopping for these at Marion. Originally our donations were going to the Brighton Conference of St Vincent De Paul, however due to very generous number of donations, the conferences of both Seacombe Gardens and St Mary's joined us and we were able to share out our donations to three conferences! Thank you to all those families and staff who have made generous donations to our 2017 Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Through all of these contributions we have helped to bring joy to many families this Christmas. Have a safe holiday and may the joy, peace and love that Christmas brings be with you. Tamara Smith Coordinator of Marist Mission

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of the Senior School Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and Celebration Last Friday evening the Graduating Class of 2017 assembled at the inaugural Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and Celebration. The event was held in the Br Joseph McAteer Centre and we hosted over 1,700 students, family members and friends. Graduands were presented in a formal ceremony in the Marist Hall, followed by our 2017 College Captains, Gemma Thomas and Luke Wormald, closing the evening with a wonderful speech, while Principal, Steve Byrne responded on behalf of the College. After the formalities, guests moved to the Function Centre, the outdoor marquee and meandered around the food vans. The entertainment was provided by the SHOCs Band, guests caught up with family and friends and sampled the delicious food and drinks (non-alcoholic) on offer. Despite the chilly weather and breeze, the forecast rain did not arrive which meant that people had an enjoyable and family-filled evening. It was fabulous to see so many grandparents and great-grandparents take the opportunity to be part of the celebration. The following from a parent sums the night up: “Friday’s graduation was great recognition of the Year 12 students. The evening had just the right level of formality to make it a special, yet relaxed night for everyone.” Many thanks to Alex Dighton (Director of Students), Kathryn Mortlock and the many other staff behind the scenes who made the evening so enjoyable and such a success! Congratulations to our Year 12 Graduating Class of 2017!

2017 Parent & Friends Wrap –Up and 2018 Dates On 22 November, The Parents and Friends Assocation held their AGM over dinner at the Morphett Arms Hotel. This year there was great interest in the AGM and a strong turn out with some new and enthusiastic faces who will be a wonderful addition to this long standing SHC institution. As 2017 closes, we farewell Lynne Kurtzer as Chairwoman and Jeanie Franklin as Treasurer and wish them well as their children have now completed their schooling at Sacred Heart. On behalf of all Parents/Caregivers at Sacred Heart, I would like to sincerely thank these two wonderful and capable woman for enriching our community with their time and care. We are the poorer for their departure from Sacred Heart. In 2018 we will see a new line up as follows:

• Chairwoman - Ingrid McKay • Secretary - Claudia Grez • Treasurer - Jo Paterson.

We also have some wonderful committee members staying on in 2018 including Natalie Paparella and Nicole Farmer. They are joined by some new faces including Jodie Veldhoen, Teresa Ragless, Yvonne and David Caire and Maureen Joyce. A big thank you to these parents for getting involved. We are also extremely lucky to have Gail Morgan, Head of Senior School, continuing in her role as Teacher Representative. Gail is a wonderful advocate and supporter of the P&F. We would love you to join us in 2018 because as they say - the more the merrier!! And after all, the P&F is all about the social engagement of parents with children at the senior campus. With this in mind, our first meeting for 2018 is Wednesday 7 February (Week 2 of Term 1) in the Parlour at 7pm - so save the date and come along! Senior End of Year Music and Dance Stage 1 Music and Dance Showcase On Tuesday 14 November, the Stage 1 Music and Dance classes hosted an end of semester showcase. All musicians presented a solo performance whilst the dance students presented two ensemble presentations. In addition, there were presentations of combined Music and Dance tasks on the night, which has been a new undertaking this semester. The Stage 1 Dance class and the Stage 1 Music Experience class worked on a collaborative task where two dancers worked with a musician to create an original composition of music and dance. Throughout last term the group exchanged ideas of images, emotions and style and this term worked towards the presentations, which were shown for the first time at this event. A well-attended evening. Well done to all staff and students involved!

Year 10 Music Tour Both Year 10 Music classes headed out for a tour of the local parish primary schools on Thursday 16 November. The very enthusiastic group of Year 10 musicians played to an even more enthusiastic group at Nativity Primary School in the morning and then at St Therese Primary School in the afternoon. The group was put in charge of every aspect of the event, choosing the set list, setting up the sound, MC-ing, keeping the program moving and even loading the trailer. It was a great day out and all players did very well. This event went towards the student's Certificate II in Music Industry which they will receive at the end of the year. Well done to all students on a wonderful performance! Dan Ryan Director of Music

Marist Immersion Experience “I cannot see a child without wanting to let him know how much Jesus Christ has loved him and how much he should, in return, love the divine Savior.” (St Marcellin Champagnat) As a Catholic school in the Marist tradition, our focus on faith formation and ministry sets us apart. We foster the spiritual growth of the young people at our College so that they can become ‘game-changers’ for the marginilsed. Currently, 28 students and 6 staff are scattered across the Asia-Pacific in Sri Lanka, India, Fiji and The Philippines, immersed in marginal Marist communities. The purpose of the Marist Immersion experience is two-fold.

1. It enables us to fulfil our Marist mission, to spread the Good News to those living on the margins. 2. To provide our students with an authentic mission experience.

Sacred Heart College has donated $64,000 in funds and educational material to Marist communities across these four countries - our highest ever donation amount. This is testament to the solidarity of our College community through events like Marist Month, the Marist Mission March, and various other House and school Initiatives across our two campuses. Below is an exerpt from Rebecca Bond, one of the staff members accompanying the team to Sri Lanka and India. Our team has just finished our first week of immersion and our first time in Sri Lanka. We have been overwhelmed and truly blessed to have been with the brothers in Kalpitiya, Colombo. Brother Lal is very much loved and respected by the community but quietly goes about his work in the background. Br Navinda has been our main companion along with Chathurica, a local woman who assists the brothers with the school groups who visit. They are both jovial people with a great sense of humour and have gone above and beyond to accommodate us. The students have enjoyed bus and truck rides filled with singing, taking turns in English and Sinhalese. Students taught on Thursday and Friday, including a boat ride to the local island school. Our students have been moved by the welcome received in each school, students prepared with a welcome in English and handfuls of flowers as a gift for each person. They have thoroughly loved being with the children and were disappointed when Homework Club on Saturday afternoon was cancelled. We are fortunate that the children come and visit and play at the Brothers house and within a few days there was a regular group of children who had befriended our students, taking note of their movements so they could be at the Brothers’ house to welcome them when we got back from our daily activities. Saturday morning we visited the Shrine to St Anne, a beautiful coastal church that has a large circular glass window which looks out onto the ocean dedicated to the mother of Mary. Here the students participated in mass with such reverence, that Will and I couldn’t help but be very proud of them as a wonderful representation of our college for the first time in Sri Lanka. We moved to Tudella to spend a night with the brothers in the Novitiate on Tuesday night. A few tears shed as goodbyes were said to a community that exudes hospitality and happiness. Talking with Brother Godfrey about his perception of our students (being their first experience of SHC), he described our students as deeply respectful and simple, they didn’t ask for anything and happily participated in whatever was arranged for them. No better compliment could be given than a Brother saying our students live the characteristic of Simplicity.

Dependent on the location of the Immersion teams and their intermittent access to the internet, the College will aim to regularly update our community from Fiji, The Philippines and India via our Facebook page @shcadelaide. James Gill Director of Marist Mission
