Sacred Heart Catholic Church Second Sunday of Advent–December 10, 2017 Reflection from the Pastor: Today’s Gospel is unique in that it is the only section of the Gospels used in the Sacred Liturgy that does not mention the name of Jesus. Instead, it gives us the story of St. John the Baptist and his mission of preparing the way of the Lord. So, even though Our Lord’s name is not mentioned, the introduction to the Gospel sets the tone of what is to follow: The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. God sent St. John the Baptist to be the last of the prophets and to prepare His People to receive their Messiah, God Himself, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. St. John the Baptist reminds us of the importance of holy penance, that is, correcting our disordered habits and desires by means of prayer, fasting and giving to charity. We prepare during Advent to receive in faith our Messiah and to prepare for His Second Coming. Let us prepare well by opening wide our hearts to Him. Fr. Reflection from the Pastor:

Today’s Gospel is unique in that it is the only section of the Gospels used in

the Sacred Liturgy that does not mention the name of Jesus. Instead, it gives

us the story of St. John the Baptist and his mission of preparing the way of

the Lord. So, even though Our Lord’s name is not mentioned, the

introduction to the Gospel sets the tone of what is to follow: The

beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. God

sent St. John the Baptist to be the last of the prophets and to

prepare His People to receive their Messiah, God Himself, the Second Person

of the Blessed Trinity. St. John the Baptist reminds us of the importance of

holy penance, that is, correcting our disordered habits and desires by means

of prayer, fasting and giving to charity. We prepare during Advent to receive

in faith our Messiah and to prepare for His Second Coming. Let us prepare

well by opening wide our hearts to Him.
