Reactions To Jesus

In general people react differently to Jesus and his message of salvation. And very often, as we see in the gospels, the reactions are conflicting. In the gospel of Mark, when Jesus entered the synagogue to preach, there were three different kinds of reactions to his presence and message. The Scribes and the Pharisees reacted with suspicion, hostility and disdain (Mk 3:1-2). The unclean spirits reacted with fear at the presence of the Almighty power of God in Jesus. He silenced the spirits and cast them out of the possessed man (Mk 1:23-26) (Mk 1:23-26) (Mk 1:23-26). The people or the bystanders reacted with amazement at the authority of Jesus to change hearts and lives through his words and deeds (Mk 1:27-28).

Throughout Jesus’ public ministry, these initial reactions would become the norm. In fact, they have also become the norm throughout the history of Christianity. The Scribes and Pharisees represent all those who are hostile, disdainful and suspicious of the Church. These include non-believers of all sorts – atheists, unchristian governments, secular humanists, people of other religions, Christian sects, and unfortunately, some disgruntled Catholics. In addition to persecutions in non-Christian countries around the world, there has been uptick in rejection and hostility toward Christianity in Europe. Recently, I saw a video clip of a street preacher in Britain who was being harassed. Once he started preaching, many people tried to silence him. They called the police on him complaining that his message was upsetting them. It was a testimony to the reality of a post-Christian Europe.

The unclean spirits who reacted with fear represent those who are scared of Jesus and the church. People who avoid going to church because they don’t want to be confronted by the truth, those who don’t want to be challenged to abandon their sinful ways, and those who are under the influence of evil spirits as Pope Francis repeatedly says. These brothers and sisters outwardly seem scared of change. Yet inside, they are crying out for help. Like the man possessed by unclean spirit, Jesus heard his inner cry and liberated him. He saw beyond the man’s façade, defied the hostility of the Pharisees and drove the demons out of the man. Finally, there were those who reacted with amazement and believed in Jesus. They represent people of good will, people with humble hearts and simple faith. To these people and those who are crying out for help inside, we must continue to minister the word of God and the sacraments. Like Jesus, we must not be deterred.

En general, las personas reaccionan de manera diferente a Jesús y su mensaje de salvación. Y muy a menudo, como vemos en los evangelios, las reacciones son contradictorias. En el evangelio de Marcos, cuando Jesús entró a la sinagoga para predicar, hubo tres tipos diferentes de reacciones a su presencia y mensaje. Además de las persecuciones en países no cristianos de todo el mundo, ha habido un repunte en el rechazo y la hostilidad hacia el cristianismo en Europa. Recientemente, vi un video clip de un predicador callejero en Gran Bretaña que estaba siendo hostigado. Una vez que comenzó a predicar, muchas personas intentaron silenciarlo. Los espíritus inmundos que reaccionaron con miedo representan a aquellos que tienen miedo de Jesús y la iglesia. Las personas que evitan ir a la iglesia porque no quieren ser confrontadas por la verdad, aquellos que no quieren ser desafiados a abandonar sus caminos pecaminosos, y aquellos que están bajo la influencia de espíritus malignos como el Papa Francisco dice repetidamente. Estos hermanos y hermanas aparentemente tienen miedo al cambio. Sin embargo, dentro, están pidiendo ayuda a gritos. Como el hombre poseído por el espíritu inmundo, Jesús escuchó su clamor interior y lo liberó. Vio más allá de la fachada del hombre, desafió la hostilidad de los fariseos y expulsó a los demonios del hombre. Finalmente, hubo quienes reaccionaron con asombro y creyeron en Jesús. Representan personas de buena voluntad, personas con corazones humildes y fe simple. Para estas personas y aquellos que claman por ayuda interna, debemos continuar ministrando la palabra de Dios y los sacramentos. Al igual que Jesús, no debemos ser disuadidos.

FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING Monday, February 5th, 7:00 PM IN BIEDERMANN HALL

Before I was a youth minister, I worked with special needs adults’ full time. I was assigned a client that liked to go out for lunch rather than bringing his own lunch. One day my client wanted McDonalds for lunch and as we were parking, I saw a homeless gentleman holding a sign that said, “Homeless, Anything Helps, God Bless”. So when I ordered my lunch I asked to double my order with the plan in mind to go give the homeless gentleman a meal. So after I got my food I put my order in the car and took the duplicate order over to the homeless man. I gave the man the food and beverage and told him I didn’t have any cash, but I bought him a meal so that I knew he would at least get one meal today. The man looked at me, then looked at the food, looked back at me, and then threw the food and drink into the middle of the busy road! Luckily no cars were hit but I was greatly confused. The man began to yell and scream obscenities at me and ended with saying “Why couldn’t you just give me money like a normal person! I don’t want your food handout, especially McDonald’s, I hate McDonald’s!” I was frozen in shock from what had just happened. My first thought to myself was, “Why is this man on the corner of a McDonalds parking lot if he doesn’t like McDonalds?” Rather than getting upset at the man I just told him to have a nice day and I will pray for him. As I walked away he yelled more obscenities and ended it with saying that prayer won’t help him. I think about this day a lot especially when I see homeless people wherever I travel. We are called to care for those in need in whatever way we can. Today we talked with our year two teens about living out our faith when it comes to helping others using the corporal works of mercy as a basis. We are called to live out our faith every day and to help those in need when we can.

The University Series 2018

During the season of Lent, The University Series offers a multitude of seminars connecting faith with real life in areas such as current events, contemporary moral issues,

evangelization, faith and science, marriage and family, church history, scripture, prayer, and other priorities set by the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Synod. Sessions include multi-media presentations and always allow time for your questions. This year, 94 presentations will be held at 13 participating parishes from St. Mel in Woodland Hills to Simi Valley, Moorpark, Conejo Valley, Camarillo, and Ventura. Our faculty has extensive knowledge in their fields and love teaching. They include international authorities, priests, religious, professors, authors, lay people, and local favorites who are all passionate about helping our attendees grow in knowledge and faith.
