This year’s Rumba on the Lumber Festival promises to be a fun-filled weekend of music, good food, great races, rides, other active competitions and free kids activities. So plan to enjoy yourself from Friday through Sunday at all of the events. Friday night’s Allen Orthopedics Pasta Party is at Adelio’s Restaurant downtown with music by one of Lumberton’s favorite bands, Goldrush!. Saturday’s events center on the Downtown Lumberton Plaza. On Sunday the festival finishes with

cycling events out at the Northeast Park. Proceeds from the 2018 Rumba on the Lumber will be donated to help improve walking, running and cycling paths around Lumberton!

Of course Saturday is the big day in downtown Lumberton for the festival. The biggest news is that we are back on the Downtown Plaza, and along 3rd Street. As usual, there will be wall-to-wall activities all day long. The streets will be lined with food vendors

galore, as well as craft, art, business and non-profit booths both local and regional.Saturday’s activities begin at 9:00 AM with the Southeastern Health 5K & 10K races. At 11:00, the Southeastern Health Free Family

Fun Mile will begin. Walkers and runners of all abilities are welcome! So come on out and be actively involved, or come to cheer on all the participants.

Meanwhile downtown along 3rd

Street and the Downtown Plaza, all of the vendors will be open from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. From burgers to gyros and beyond, you’ll be sure to find culinary delights to keep you munching all day long. Also, the craft, art, non-profit and business booths will be open with many exciting things to buy and things to learn about.

For the kids, the free Lumbee River EMC Kids Zone will also be open from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. With a Spinner, bounce houses, giant

slides, bungee trampoline, baseball and basketball throws, and more, you can imagine the fun you’ll have with all of the attractions along 3rd Street near Chestnut.

From 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM you

won’t want to miss the Bud Light North of the Border Chili Cook-Off located in the parking lot between 3rd and Water Streets. This is the biggest Chili Cook-Off in all of North Carolina, with over 30 teams competing for such awards as, “Weirdest Ingredient,” “Hottest Chili,” and “Best Chili in Town.” Braggin’ rights are on the line, and your admission to the Cook-Off entitles you to taste all of the Chili concoctions as well as

sample products provided by RA Jeffreys Distributing. While you are sampling all of the great chili, you’ll enjoy the sounds of the 80’s from Charlotte’s own Cassette Rewind Band. All proceeds from the Chili Cook-Off go to support the

Lumberton Football Association.From 2:00 until 5:00 PM, on the Downtown Plaza Stage you can enjoy the music of one of North Carolina’s favorite bands- The Carolina Soul Band. So bring your lawn chairs, sit back and relax to all those tunes you love.

Sunday, March 4th, will feature the final events of the weekend: the cycling events at the Northeast Park. At noon, you can take off on

the Yamaha of Lumberton’s Metric Century (100K!). At 1:30, you can ride in the Cruzbike 20-Mile Bicycle Adventure. At 3:30, children can test their cycling skills in the Bicycle Shop of Fayetteville’s Free Bicycle Rodeo. So bring your bicycle and your helmet, and be ready to prove

your mettle!As you can see, the weekend presented by the Robeson Road Runners and the City of Lumberton will be active and fun and full of surprises! Bring the family and have a great time in Lumberton!

You must remember that The Rumba on the Lumber began as a running road race back in the 1980’s and is presented by the Robeson Road Runners and the City of Lumberton. To that end, the signature events at the Festival are still active ones.

The Southeastern Health 5K, 10K, and Free Family Fun Mile events are delightful runs/walks through the streets of downtown Lumberton. Both the 5K and 10K begin on Saturday, March 3rd, at 9:00 AM. The courses begin on Chestnut Street right behind the County Courthouse, then take runners up Chestnut Street, over to River Road, through Tanglewood and then back down Elm Street to the finish line at 4th and Elm. Winners receive not only cash prizes, but also beautiful prints of Matt Thompson’s latest watercolor painting.

The Family Fun Mile Walk/Run begins at 11:00 AM on Saturday, and the course uses the same start and finish lines, but only heads up to 14th Street before returning on

Elm. The first 200 children registering for the Fun Mile will receive free t-shirts commemorating the event!Every year hundreds of walkers

and runners participate in these fun, flat, and fast events. Since the 5K and 10K courses are certified by RMS Sports, times acquired at these runs may be used to enter higher profile races throughout the United States. You can register for these events at the Robeson Road Runners website. If you’d rather just watch, then come on out on the course and watch the runners as they fly by!

For the fifth year, the Rumba on the Lumber is proud to include the

Ride Robeson cycling events. On Sunday, March 4th, all of the Rumba on the Lumber cycling events will begin and end at Lumberton’s Northeast Park. According to the Robeson Road Runners President

Jef Lambdin, “We created these courses two years ago, as our cycling coordinators wanted to highlight another portion of scenic Robeson County with these courses, and we like them so much we’ll use the same courses in 2018.”

The day will begin with the Yamaha of Lumberton Metric Century at noon. This ride is a 100 kilometer (62 mile) tour of beautiful Robeson Countywith rest stops every 10 to 15 miles. This is a flat and very low traffic

ride, great for serious cyclists and recreational riders alike. At 1:30 PM, riders will take off on the Cruzbike 20-Mile Bicycle Adventure. This ride is a 20 mile flat, easy, ride with a rest stop at the halfway point,

perfect for riders of all abilities. The final cycling event on Sunday at 3:30 PM will be The Free Bicycle Rodeo sponsored by the Bicycle Shop of Fayetteville.

FINALLY Saturday’s Rumba on the Lumber Festival is back where it belongs- on the Lumberton Downtown Plaza! The producers of the Festival, The Robeson Road Runners, are elated to bring Lumberton’s signature event to its regular home from the parking lot at Water and 3rd Streets, down 3rd Street to the Lumberton Downtown Plaza. This means that on Saturday, March 3rd, beginning at 10:00 AM, the food, craft, non-profit and business vendors will line 3rd Street from Water Street to Chestnut St. and around the Downtown Plaza. Also, the starting line for the races will be on Chestnut Street behind the Robeson County Courthouse. The finish line for the races will be at Elm St. & 3rd. The Bud Light North of the Border Chili Cook-Off with

music by the Cassette Rewind Band will be from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM in the parking lot bordered by 3rd Street and Water Street (across from Adelio’s Restaurant). The Plaza Stage will feature The Carolina Soul Band from 2:00-5:00 PM. All day long, the Lumbee River KidsZone will stretch along the north side of the Downtown Plaza near Chestnut Street.

Parking will be plentiful all around the Festival site, including in the old BB&T parking lot between 4th and 5th Streets, in the parking lot between 4th and 5th Streets and Water Street and around behind the Robeson County Library.We know you’ll be able to find us. On Saturday, March 3rd, just head to where all the excitement is in downtown Lumberton!
