What is Advent? The Church divides the year into different seasons that emphasize the life of Christ and the life of the Church. Beginning on Sunday December 2, we will enter the season of the Church year called Advent - the season of preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas. Advent is a time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world so that our sins might be forgiven. It is also a time to repent and believe. Knowing that Jesus was born to forgive our sins, we admit our failures to God and believe that we are forgiven because of the death and resurrection of Jesus on our behalf. Your Submissions Are Appreciated Because Advent is such an important part of the church year, we would like to put together a devotional booklet that you can use as a part of your daily devotions during this time of waiting. The booklet will be submissions from YOU, our family of God, about what Advent means to you, as a Christian; waiting, preparing, repenting, believing in anticipation of the Christ Child’s birth. Stir up childhood memories of how you prepared for Jesus’ birth, maybe you have traditions you now incorporate that you wish to share with others. Provide scripture passages meaningful to you during this time. Prayerfully consider contributing to this special time of devotion. We hope to receive enough submissions (one paragraph to a full page) for every day of Advent, beginning December 2nd and ending on December 25th. Email your submissions to Amy Olsen at [email protected] or submit a paper copy to her in the church office no later than Monday, November 5th. By Pastor Trish For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes. Dag Hammarskjöld

As I write this, I sit in a time of “in-between.” The news that Messiah Lutheran Church will be voting on October 7th for the purpose of calling me to be their next pastor is known by many but not yet all of you. I do not yet know the outcome of this vote, so I begin to plan for leaving, but do so without a clear sense of certainty.

And in the midst of all of this there are sermons to be written, people to be visited, lessons to be taught, retreats to be planned….

Last week, someone shared the above quote with me after I made an off-hand comment about change. It speaks to me, especially for this in-between time in which I find myself. But I think it can also speak to all of us, as a community of faith. If I am called to go and serve at Messiah, I intend to fully live into the grief of saying good-bye, but to do so with a heart full of gratitude for all that has been. This is indeed a place of blessing for us all, and we have much for which we can be grateful: robust worship services and uplifting music, well-planned and executed educational opportunities for kids and families of all ages, a midweek supper for hundreds of hungry people, committed groups of volunteers carrying out tasks from preparing communion to shepherding to watering the plants. In our history many have come and gone, bringing their gifts and leaving their blessings and memories. God has richly blessed us all, and the opportunity for all of us to be in relationships with one another is one of His richest blessings. For all of this, for all that has been, we give thanks to God.

At the same time, the future is always beckoning to us, hiding from us what will be yet offering promises of hope and joy. This is also true for this place, and for all of its peoples. If I leave, someone will be coming after me. You do not yet know who this person will be, but already you can trust that this person will bring his or her special gifts, passions, ideas and commitments, and this place will continue to flourish. Even better, there will be new hellos, new relationships, new ways of discovering who we are as individuals and as a community of faith and as children of God. Of course, we must say yes to all of this!

Thank you, God. Yes, God. Yes, God. Thank you, God. The parts of this prayer seem inextricably linked; it seems like one part of this prayer cannot be prayed without the other. I hope that you will join me in the coming weeks to breathe this prayer over and over as we move into whatever is before us. Yes- thank you – thank you – yes. Amen.

Interfaith Worship—Sunday, October 14th

October Hilltoppers

1st Congregational United Church of Christ located at 150 Stadium Court will be hosting an interfaith worship service on Sunday, October 14th beginning at 4 PM. Religious leaders from different faith traditions will be taking part, including Christian (the CTK pastors will be involved), Native American, Islamic and Jewish communities. The service will be a prayer service in which we pray with words and music, movement and images. The theme will be one of moving away from separation, alienation and isolation to belonging within a community, and to a faith that transcends walls. There will also be a community choir as part of the worship opportunity for any interested singers.

What a delightful day it was at our September Hilltoppers meeting as we heard and experienced the many facets of Music Therapy with Kristin Ziemke. We have two highlights coming up in October – both on the same day! Pastor Del Begalka and his wife will start out the morning with an hour of music. They draw from a huge repertoire of familiar music with many opportunities to sing along. Following the program, we will enjoy an Oktoberfest treat of German sauerbraten and potato salad and all that goes with it. THIS WILL NOT BE A POTLUCK so all you need to do is sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex so that we know how many to plan for. A free-will offering will be received that day to cover the cost of the food. Please sign up by October 10th.

The Altar Guild meets the second Wednesday at 1:00pm each month. We meet for dessert, a short meeting and Bible Study and try to be done by 3:00pm.

We would love new members. For more information, please contact Nancy Compton at 507-388-6717.

The Annual Handbell Concert for RIVER BEND BELLS COMMUNITY ENSEMBLE will be MUSIC THROUGH THE GENERATIONS - - - Hosted at Christ the King on Sunday October 7th at 3:00pm.

The concert theme is to share music through the generations, from the silent generation of the great depression, to the modern day of the tech revolution.

The handbell ringers (includes five CTK bell ringers) along with Garrett Steinberg & band promise a most lively concert! Pastor John Petersen will again add his special touch as our program narrator! We hope you will come join us for this great musical experience.

Tickets are $10.00 and are available at the door. Kids 12 & under are free.

This fall, focused conversations are happening in each of the synod's five conferences. These conversations will be spaces to hear the results of the Landscape Survey. The conversations will also be environments to express feedback and ideas that will help to inform the content of the synod's Ministry Site Profile which will be used in the process of calling the next bishop!

You are invited to join Pastors Patrick and Trish to the conversation held at Grace Lutheran church in Waseca on Thursday, October 4th at 6:30pm. Please contact either pastor if you wish to join in on the conversation.

For more about the 8-step process of calling the next bishop, please visit http://semnsynod.org/callingourbishop2019/.

Volunteers will be needed for early morning shifts (6-8:30am) and evening shifts (7-9:30pm). In addition, there will be opportunities to provide an evening meal, help with set-up of cots/blankets, or take down/laundry. More information will be coming in late October. For questions or to volunteer before then, see Pastor Trish.

With Jesus in the Prayer Gym – Finding Prayer Role-Models in the Bible – David

“So is everyone game to go this morning?” our Personal Prayer Trainer came racing into the Prayer Gym pumped full of energy. “We’re game to go!” we shouted back in unison. “And have you saturated yourself with David’s Psalms since our last session?” A little more subdued response. “We’ll begin today with the very first Psalm. Did any of you memorize it?” A few of us raised our hands. “ ‘And on his law they meditate day and night.’ ” Our PPT quoted the second half of verse two. He repeated it. “ ‘And on his law they meditate day and night.’ What a wonderful definition of a healthy prayer life! It’s like I told you many times. Prayer is not just a small piece of our Chris-tian life. It is at the heart of a total relationship with God. When we live in an every-day, every-night … every moment … relationship with God, commu-nication back-and-forth between you and God becomes a natural flow. It’s then that you discover the secret of what King David wrote and what someone else said: ‘Pray always … and sometimes use words.’”

- Pastor Donohue Sarff
