Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful

like the heavenly Father and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Let the Church be your visible face in the world.

Send your spirit so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY: CONTRITION AND CONVERSION

“In his very first Angelus address as Pope, Pope Francis reminded us that God never gives up on us; he told us, “God understands us. He waits for us. He doesn't get tired of forgiving us, if we repent and go to him with a truly open heart.” Think about that: the Lord never gets tired of forgiving us! Sometimes, though, we get tired of asking for forgiveness, but we should-n’t. God pursues us relentlessly with love and mercy. The Holy Father wrote this: “In the parables devoted to mercy, Jesus reveals the nature of God as that of a Father who never gives up until he has forgiven the wrong and overcome rejection with compassion and mercy. We now these parables well, three in particular: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the father with two sons (cf. Luke 15:1-32). In these parables, God is always presented as full of joy, especially when he pardons. In them we find the core of the Gospel and of our faith, because mercy is presented as force that overcomes everything, filling the heart with love and bringing consolation through pardon.” (Misericordiae Vultus 9) Such mercy on the part of the Father should empower us to undertake the journey of true conversion and contrition. Conversion means a turning around, a metanoia which involves a real change of direction, a complete reversal of a former way. It is conforming our life to Christ’s life more and more, so that more and more we live His life and allow His grace to grow in us. “We can only approach the kingdom of Christ by metanoia. This is a profound change of the whole person by which we begin to con-sider, judge, and arrange our life according to the holiness and love of God, made manifest in his Son in the last days and given to us in abundance.” (Rite of Penance 6) There is nothing better than experiencing the new beginning God gives us when we reorient our life back toward Him. There is a real exhilaration that comes with changing our life and celebration a return to Him. All this is made possible because of God’s mercy and forgiveness, but we must cooperate with His mercy through our sorrow (contrition), which aptly expressed in the Sacrament of Pen-ance. When we look over the actions of our life, and realize that we have sinned, and that we want to do better, we are experiencing contri-

tion, That’s when God’s grace urges us to try to change the areas of our life that cause us to sin. Then , our conversion and reorientation back to God is made complete by celebrating the Sacrament of Penance; without this sacrament, the grace-filled experience of truly expressing our contrition is lacking something real and tangible. We should never cheat ourselves out of the full experience of contrition and conversion by missing out on expressing our contrition in the Sacrament of Penance.

EL AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA: ARREPENTIMIENTO Y CONVERSION

"En su primer Angelus como Papa, Francisco nos recuerda que Dios nunca se da por vencido con nosotros; nos dijo: "Dios nos entiende. Él nos espera. Él no se cansa de perdonarnos, si nos arrepentimos y vamos a él con un corazón verdaderamente abierto".

Piense sobre esto: el Señor nunca se cansa de perdonarnos! A veces, sin embargo, nos cansamos de pedir perdón, pero no debemos. Dios nos persigue sin descanso con el amor y la misericordia. El Santo Padre escribió esto: "En las parábolas dedicadas a la misericordia, Jesús revela la naturaleza de Dios como la de un padre que nunca se da por vencido hasta que ha perdonado el mal y supera el rechazo con compasión y misericordia. Nosotros conocemos muy bien estas parábolas, tres en particular: la oveja perdida, la moneda perdida, y el padre con dos hijos (Lucas 15:1-32). En estas parábolas, Dios siempre es presentado lleno de alegría, especialmente cuando él perdona. En elloa en-contramos el núcleo del Evangelio y de nuestra fe, porque la misericordia es presentada como la fuerza que todo lo vence, llenando el corazón con amor y trayendor consuelo a través de perdón". (Misericordiae Vultus 9)

Tal piedad de la parte del Padre nos debería permitir emprender el viaje de la verdadera conversión y arrepentimien-to. La conversión significa un giro alrededor, una metanoia que implica un verdadero cambio de rumbo, un cambio completo de una forma antigua. Nuestra vida se está ajustando a la vida de Cristo más y más, por lo que cada vez más nosotros vivimos Su vida y permite Su gracia crecer en nosotros.

"Sólo podemos abordar el reino de Cristo por la metanoia. Se trata de un cambio profundo de toda la persona por la que empezamos a considerar, juzgar y organizar nuestra vida de acuerdo a la santidad y el amor de Dios, mani-festado en su Hijo en los últimos días y se nos da en abundancia. "(Rito de la Penitencia 6)

No hay nada mejor que experimentar el nuevo comienzo que Dios nos da cuando reorientamos nuestra vida de nuevo hacia él. Hay una verdadera euforia que viene con el cambio de nuestra vida y la celebración de un retorno a él. Todo esto es posible gracias a la misericordia y el perdón de Dios, pero hay que cooperar con Su misericordia a través de nuestro dolor (contrición), la que acertadamente es expresada en el Sacramento de la Penitencia.

Cuando miramos más las acciones de nuestra vida, y nos damos cuenta de que hemos pecado, y que queremos hacer lo mejor, estamos experimentando la contrición. Eso es cuando la gracia de Dios nos impulsa a tratar de cambiar las áreas de nuestra vida que nos hacen pecar . Entonces, nuestra conversión y reorientación de regreso a Dios se com-pleta con la celebración del Sacramento de la Penitencia; sin este sacramento, la experiencia llena de gracia de ex-presar nuestra verdadera contrición es la pérdida de algo real y tangible. Nunca debemos engañarnos a nosotros mis-mos de la experiencia completa de la contrición y conversión perdiendo la expresión de nuestra contrición en el Sa-cramento de la Penitencia.

Lenten Practices

All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and All Fridays of Lent.

All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the Law of Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

“This spring, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, April 10 at St. Lawrence the Martyr, Sayville and on Sunday, April 24 at the Church of Maria Regina, Seaford. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30pm. Couples may register for ONE liturgy.

Lectio Divina: is a form of prayer using Sacred Scripture. It is a four step process, using Scripture as its basis to get to know our Lord in a more profound way. It is a process that was developed by St. Benedict and can be used in individual prayer or in a group.

4 STEPS: READ, MEDITATE, PRAY, CONTEMPLATE

BEGIN WITH A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: Come Holy Spirit, illuminate my mind, open my heart so I can encounter in your Word Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life…..Help me follow today, the call of Christ in a new way, according to your word. And let me be for all in the world, one who is sent by the Lord, let me be a brother/sister, let me be a friend, let me be a disciple of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

STEP 1: READ: What does the Biblical Text Say? At the most basic level: What is going on in this Scriptural passage? You have to identify a WORD, PHRASE, IDEA that touches your heart….that the Lord places in your heart….. FIRST READING: read the text out loud slowly and intentionally. REFLECTION: take several minutes to reflect on the reading and allow the Holy Spirit to surface a WORD, A PHRASE, AN IDEA/CONCEPT that is central to the meaning of the text for you (What is the Biblical text saying?). INTERNALIZE: repeat the word or phrase either out loud or in your heart.

STEP 2: MEDITATE: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text? What does God want me to know or see through this Scripture Text. How does this text speak to my experience in life? SECOND READING: read the same passage again. MEDITATION: take several minutes to reflect on the question: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text?

STEP 3: PRAY: My Lord has spoken to me in the Scriptural Text: What do I want to say back to him in Prayer? THIRD READING: may want to re-read the same passage again. REFLECTION: Jesus has spoken to me personally in this Scriptural text. What do I want to say to my Lord in Prayer? PRAYER: say your prayer to our Lord either out loud or interiorly.

STEP 4: CONTEMPLATE / ACT: As a result of my prayer, what is Jesus calling me to DO (this week) as a result of this process? Finally, our prayer calls us to action ultimately to be more compassionate and faithful. CONTEMPLATE: on what our Lord is calling you to do as a result of this process.

Lectio Divina: es una forma de oración utilizando las Sagradas Escrituras. Se trata de un proceso de cuatro pasos, usando las Escrituras como base para conocer a nuestro Señor en una forma más profunda. Fue un proceso desarrollado por San Benedicto y se puede utilizar como oración individual o grupal.

4 PASOS: LEER, MEDITAR, ORAR, CONTEMPLAR

COMENZAR CON UNA ORACIÓN AL ESPÍRITU SANTO: Ven, Espíritu Santo, ilumina mi mente, abre mi corazón para que yo pueda encontrar en la Palabra a Cristo, el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida……. Ayúdame a seguir hoy, la llamada de Cristo de una manera nueva, conforme a tu palabra. Y lo digo por todos en el mundo, uno quien es enviado por el Señor, quiero ser un hermano/hermana, un amigo, ahora voy a ser un discípulo del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén. PASO 1: LEER: ¿Qué dice el texto bíblico? En el nivel más básico: ¿Qué está pasando en este pasaje bíblico? Usted tiene que identificar una PALABRA, FRASE, IDEA que toca su corazón…..que el Señor pone en tu corazón….. PRIMERA LECTURA: lea el texto en voz alta lenta y deliberadamente. REFLEXIÓN: tome varios minutos para reflexionar sobre la lectura y permitir que el Espíritu Santo le revele UNA PALABRA, UNA FRASE, UNA IDEA/CONCEPTO que es el centro del significado del texto para usted (¿Qué le está diciendo el texto bíblico?). INTERNALIZAR: repetir la palabra o frase en voz alta o en su corazón. PASO 2: MEDITAR: ¿Qué me está diciendo personalmente Jesús a través del texto de la Escritura? ¿Qué es lo que Dios quiere que conozca o vea a través del texto de la Escritura? ¿Cómo este texto me habla a mi experiencia en la vida? SEGUNDA LECTURA: leer el mismo pasaje. MEDITACIÓN: tome varios minutos para reflexionar sobre la pregunta: ¿Qué me está diciendo personalmente Jesús a través de este texto de la Escritura? PASO 3: ORAR: Mi Señor me ha hablado en el texto Bíblico: ¿Qué es lo que le quiero decir a Dios en oración? TERCERA LECTURA: puede volver a leer el mismo pasaje. REFLEXIÓN: Jesús me ha hablado personalmente en este texto Bíblico. ¿Qué quiero decir a mi Señor en oración? ORACIÓN: diga su oración a Señor ya sea en voz alta o interiormente. PASO 4: CONTEMPLAR / ACTUAR: Como resultado de mi oración, ¿A qué Jesús me está llamando HACER (esta semana) como resultado de este proceso? Por último, nuestra oración nos invita a la acción, en definitiva, a ser más compasivo y fiel. CONTEMPLAR: en lo que nuestro Señor está llamándome hacer como resultado de este proceso.
