The Anchor
Since I’ve been in Boston, from 2008, every year I have participated in the Way of the Cross that my friends of the Catholic Move-
ment of Communion and Liberation, organize on Good Friday. My congregation, the Missionaries of St. Charles, exists because of this movement and its founder, Msgr. Luigi Giussani, a great man of faith, who happened to be also my theology teacher at the Catholic University of the Sa-cred Heart, in Milan. Msgr. Giussani has taught us the value of GESTURES. Ges-tures are not simply “things that we do”, but exemplary things, signs. Gestures are deliberate, often public, actions that com-municate something very important. In our modern culture religion and its acts, its “gestures” are accepted only if kept personal, private. The public sphere has become increasingly inhospitable for religious people, Christians and Catholics. We often accept this complacently, as a given, without much discussion. Yet, what happened to Jesus was public in the extreme: we speak of his “public life” and Jesus preached publicly everywhere, challenging not only the religious authorities of his time, but the political authorities as well. This has been true throughout the two millennia of the history of the Church. Christianity literally changed the world because of this public example of Christ, and his invitation to tell the good news everyone, in all occasions, without fear. Jesus enemies, thought of making an example of him, pub-licly displaying his trial, torture, and cruel capital punish-ment. Christianity is not a private religion, it may be very per-sonal, but not private. Our most important festivities and celebrations have this public character that is remarkable and personally chal-lenging for each one of us: are we witnesses? We are not only invited to participate, but to spread the word. This year too I will be participating in the public Way of the Cross, next Friday, starting from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, where Card. O’Malley will give us his blessing, participating in the first station. We will follow the Cross through downtown Boston, I’d like to invite you all there and to the other “gestures’ that characterize our Holy Week and Easter. Let us accept Jesus’ invitation and stay with him step by step this week, we are the people of the Cross, after all. Its personal, but not private. I hope to see you there. Fr. Stefano

HOLY TRIDUUM:
BEING NEAR JESUS
DURING THE HOURS OF HIS
PASSION, DEATH, AND RESURRECTION
The Three Days (Triduum) of the Passion, Death and
Resurrection of Christ are our most solemn celebrations.
Let’s make time “to be there”, like Mary, accompanying
Jesus, to understand better his sacrifice for us.
Our most important liturgies happen at night, so as to give
everyone opportunity: it is a sacrifice worth making.
The Movement of Communion and Liberation invites everyone to
