Program Spotlight

What is the Memory Café?It is a social gathering for individuals living with dementia and their care partners. Care partners can include spouses, children, friends, and professional caregivers working with people living with dementia.

What are the benefits? The goal is to help guests form new friendships and reduce social isolation that can occur with people living with dementia and their care partners. These cafes provide an opportunity to have fun together in a different environment outside the home, while involving creative arts and creative activities that can be applicable at home.

Interested in sponsoring a café? Help support caregivers and their loved ones living with Dementia. For more information, contact Maureen at the Senior Center at 781-438-1157.

THE TRAVELING TOOTH FAIRYFriday, December 8th; 9AM-12PM Many people do not have access to dental care for a variety of reasons. It may be that they don’t have dental insurance, there is a lack of transportation, financial reasons or simply that there is not a dentist nearby. The Traveling Tooth Fairy, Marcy E. Foreman, RDH, BS, provides “On-Site Oral Healthcare” using portable dental equipment, as allowed by the Board of Registration in Dentistry. Marcy will be visiting the Stoneham Senior Center to offer Dental and Oral Cancer Screenings, Dental Cleanings (including partials and dentures) and Fluoride Treatments. Marcy can also make referrals for additional dental care and assist you in finding a dental office. Dental Cleanings are $65 and can be reduced based on income and household size. MassHealth and other state dental insurances cover these services. Please call the Senior Center to schedule an appointment.

Mystic Valley Elder Services (MVES) is a nonprofit agency which partners with elders,

adults living with disabilities, and caregivers residing in Stoneham and surrounding towns. They help you find what you need to live the way you want. MVES works one-on-one with adults 60+ and adults of all ages living with disabilities to connect you to services that support your health, well-being, and independence. They provide care management, coordinate services and refer you to appropriate healthcare and home care providers. Many of the services are free or low-cost, depending on your income. For more information, give them a call at (781) 324-7705 or visit www.mves.org.

ASK THE NURSE I used to love the holidays, now as they are approaching I am feeling overwhelmed with all I need to do. The rushing of the holidays has left me feeling stressed. What am I to do?

First dear reader, take a deep breath. Todays’ marketing and businesses have left us all feeling stressed. “Stop the world, I want to get off” runs through my head as the holidays approach. What use to be a joyous time is now filled with commercialism and consumerism. Let’s all take a step back.

Stress is a common factor in life. Adults and children experience stress. Seniors also feel stress, even though some may have retired, raised their children and paid off their homes. Certain amounts of stress are a part of life for people of all ages. For Seniors, stress has the potential to be especially overwhelming. This type of tension in older adults has unique contributing factors, such as the loss of a spouse or friends. Living alone can increase the sense of isolation. Sometimes the simple tasks of everyday life can cause stress in those who experience physical or medical limitations. The effects of stress can sometimes exacerbate health conditions from which some seniors suffer, causing additional worry.

Physical signs of stress can include body aches and pains or increased episodes of illness. Changes in sleeping pattern, either trouble falling asleep or interrupted nighttime sleep can signal significant stress. Seniors must be encouraged to take care of their own psychological and physical health whenever possible. Simply by eating a balanced diet, partaking in gentle yet regular exercise and by engaging in activities you enjoy will help with stress.

Seniors should be encouraged to find and maintain social contact as this will often make a considerable difference in your life. The key to combating stress is to recognize it early and to treat it appropriately not only during holiday time but everyday events.

Now dear deader put on some soothing music and have a nice cup of Chamomile tea.

Peg Drummey, Stoneham Board of Health Nurse, answers your questions on health. To submit a question, check at the front desk or email [email protected].

MVES's Referral & Information Service has monthly office hours at the Center. In December, staff will be here from 10am to 12pm on Thursday, 12/21.

MVES hosted "A Matter of Balance" focused on reducing falls and injuries from falls.
