Beautiful First Holy Communions! What Comes Next? The past few days we have had the joy of celebrating many First Holy Communions in our parish. The girls were beautiful in their white dresses and veils, and the boys looked handsome in their suits and ties. And they all did their best to look holy on this special day in which they were to receive Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion, and it was all recorded on camera. And I am sure many families celebrated after the Mass with a special meal at a favorite restaurant, or maybe a carne asada back at home. We certainly should treasure and celebrate a First Holy Communion. But maybe we need to ask ourselves, isn’t every Holy Communion worth celebrating? We believe the words of Jesus: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51) We believe the words of St. Paul, “For I received from the Lord
what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, ‘This is My body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25) And so as Catholics we believe that during every Holy Mass the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus - not just a symbol of Jesus, but really Him! So why do we tend to lose the sense of joy and wonder that we had when we received our First Holy Communion? Maybe it’s because God is so generous to us! Imagine if Jesus had said that the Holy Mass would only be celebrated once a year in the entire world, and only in the Temple of Jerusalem! We would all try to save our money to go there at least once in our lifetime to attend a Holy Mass. And if we were able to travel to Jerusalem for that most special event, and if we were somehow able to squeeze into the doors of the temple, we would pay close attention to every word and gesture of the priest. And if we could only receive one Holy Communion in our lifetime, we would surely spend some time in prayer afterwards, to treasure that moment of having Jesus with us in a real way. But God is so generous with us, it’s easy to forget just how great a miracle happens at every Mass, and how blessed we are to be there. Let us remind ourselves often of the meaning of this most beautiful sacrament. Let us come early to Mass and prepare ourselves well for this most holy time. Let us listen carefully to the readings and the homily and truly lift up our hearts in prayer, that we may more worthily receive the Holy Eucharist. And may we never miss the opportunity to attend well the Holy Mass, at least every Sunday or Saturday evening. Jesus, present in the Holy Eucharist, is always worth celebrating!
Congratulations to those who received Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community and
for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find consolation in
your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken
bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through
Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen

¡HERMOSAS PRIMERAS SAGRADAS COMUNIONES!
