4-H/FFA OWNERSHIP OF ANIMALS
One of the objectives in owning an animal is to learn new
skills in animal breeding, feeding, management and health.

bitions set up minimum dates for length of ownership nec-
essary for exhibiting.

Shooting Sports Calendar/Gun Raffle
Missouri 4-H is again partnering with the Missouri Friends of the
NRA in a giant raffle/fundraiser. The raffle is for 104 guns to be giv-
en away during the year (July 1 – June 30, two guns per week). The
calendars actually serve as the raffle tickets and are sold for $50
each. Photos of Missouri 4-Hers are featured on several of the
monthly pages. Our shooting sports program should expect to re-
ceive about $15 for each calendar sold, plus it benefits the state
program.
Livingston County has ordered 40 calendars to sell—contact the
office, a shooting sports member, or Suzi Beck to purchase.
Members/parents—would you like to help the cause and sell a
few? Contact the office to pick up calendars.
4-H MFA Saddle Award Alison Copeland The award is given to the Missouri 4-H member aged 14 years and older participating in the Missouri 4-H horsemanship program who demonstrates knowledge and skills in horsemanship and horse science, the ability to share the knowledge and skills with other members and the commitment to better their community. Appli-cations must be postmarked by July 6 and submitted to: MFA Saddle Award, State 4-H Office, 1110 S College Ave, Columbia, MO 65211. Achievement Day FAQ’s
Q: What is Achievement Day?
A: Where members show 4-H projects (up to 3 for each project).
Q: When and where is Achievement Day?
A: The fairgrounds (Agri-Science Center) on Monday, July 11.
Bonus: Free fishing at the Litton Pond from 5:30-8:30!!!
Q: How do I register projects? Watch your email in June!
A: NEW! We are encouraging all members to use the online Fair
Entry program for projects—just like Livestock and Animal en-
tries for the fair. This should streamline exhibit night for all.
Don’t worry—you can still sign up using cards if needed.
Q: Are there specific requirements for each project?
A: Some projects (like photography and cake decorating) have
very specific guidelines, so be sure you have up to date info on
those. All other projects will have general guidelines outlined
in the Fair Book, so be sure to check that out—find that online
here:
http://extension.missouri.edu/livingston/schedules.aspx
Q: What are the requirements to show?
A: To be a member in good standing, members should attend at
least 1/2 of club meetings and complete 6 hours of project educa-
tion.
Q: What if I don’t have a project leader?
A: Some projects are countywide projects (shooting sports, dog,
horse, etc), but most are not. Sometimes club leaders may have
ideas on who may lead a project, or clubs may be interested in
sharing leaders. Often, parents, family friends, grandparents, etc
are the best project leaders! We have some curriculum available
for checkout at the office, or you can find resources or order cur-
riculum here: http://4h.missouri.edu/programsprojects.aspx
Q: Can parents go with children to be judged?
A: In order to prevent congestion and keep the event youth fo-
cused, parents are not able to go with children. However, youth
and adult helpers are ready with a smile to help children!
Q: What will the judge talk to my children about?
A: They will ask how the project was made, what was learned,
what they liked, what they didn’t like. We have great judges, their
job is to put children at ease and they are good at what they do!
Q: What tips might other parents give me for Achievement
Day?
A: Bring water, snacks (especially if you have several small chil-
dren). During busy stretches, you may be waiting out side the
building, so dress and prepare accordingly.
Guidelines for Photography
1) Photos must be mounted on an 8” x
10” solid mounting surface.
2) The mounting surface should be mat
board, in a color of the photographer’s
choice.
3) Photographs must be 8” x 10” or small-
er, with no more than four photos per
mat board.
““Mat board” is a specific material, intended
to keep the photo from getting bent or de-
stroyed. It is not cardboard, foam—YOU MAY
CONTACT THE OFFICE TO PURCHASE.
o Mat board may be easily purchased from
online retailers or contact your extension
office.
o Examples of online retailers that sell 8” x
10” mat board include Sears, Golden State
Art, Redimat, Etsy and several others which
can be found via Google.
o If uncertain whether it’s mat board, do the
“wave it and squeeze it” test: Mat board is
not squishy or flimsy. If it isn’t light, thin, stiff,
and solid, the material is not mat board.
Mounting material meeting this test will be
given the benefit of the doubt.
Single window mats (“frames” made of mat
board and sized 8X10) are acceptable but not
required.
Photography—Mat Board at the
Office
Are you tired of scrambling to find mat
board? This year, the Extension Office
will have mat board available that is di-
rectly from the State 4-H Office so it will
be official! The price will be $1/board.
We also have photo sleeves ($.50) to
place the photo and mat board in to dis-
play. If interested, contact us or stop by
the office.

Congratulations to this Year’s Livingston County Scholarship Recipients
This year Livingston County 4-H awarded 6 scholarships to exceptional Living-
ston County 4-H senior members, each in the amount of $250. Recipients were:
Liberty Cox and Claire Shipp, Chillicothe; Marley Anderson and Kaylie Camp-
bell, Southwest; and Terryn Dodson, Tina-Avalon.
Additional congratulations go to Liberty Cox ($2500), Terryn Dodson, Kyle
Hansen, Joe Johnson, and Claire Shipp (all $1000) for receiving statewide 4-H
Foundation Scholarships. The state process is highly competitive, this is a great
honor!
All of the above members should be recognized for incredible 4-H careers and
great achievements—and for staying in 4-H through graduation. You each have
left your mark on Livingston County 4-H. Underclassmen—look to these
youth as role models and keep trying new things in 4-H and stick it out to
graduation. You never know what opportunities are around the corner!
