Congratulations!

Long time Crawford County 4-H Volunteer, Linda Bast recently

received the 2014 Missouri 4-H State Council Alumni Award. Linda was honored at the annual MO 4-H Foundation Banquet and Awards

Ceremony on March 14 in Columbia.

She served on the State 4-H Council as a 4-H member and in later years supported not only her children, but inspired many other youth

to take part in this state 4-H event.

Congratulations, Linda! We appreciate your dedication and years of

service.

Crawford County 4-H Members Attend State 4-H Teen Conference

Local 4-H members Hayley Wright, Hannah Pilkenton and Summer Pilkenton of Cuba attended the State 4-H Teen Conference in Columbia, March 22-23, 2014. The trip is planned and hosted each year by the Missouri State 4-H Council.

The two-day conference included sessions on product invention and marketing, foreign exchange interviews, and citizenship development. Evening activities consisted of a dance, a movie, and a robotics challenge.

Summer, Hannah & Hayley had the opportunity to interact with 11-13

year olds from all over Missouri, and learn more about where 4-H can take them in their education and careers.

Linda received the award from Jared Day, State 4-H Council President

To Compete or Not Compete: Words about Clover Kids and Competition

Submitted by: Alison Copeland, State 4-H Youth Development Specialist

The Clover Kids program is designed to introduce 5-7 year olds to a variety of non-competitive 4-H experiences.

By participating in non-competitive activities, Clover Kids are more likely to develop confidence, creativity, and competence than children in competitive situations.

The concepts of competition are difficult to learn. Each child develops these skills at different ages and they sometimes are not developed until youth are age 12 or older. Typically, five to seven year olds lack the emotional and cognitive maturity to participate in competitive events. Keep in mind you are ready to be involved in competition when they:

Know how to play fair– understand and obey the rules without too much adult supervision.

Win with humility and lose with grace.

Enjoy the skills of competition, win or lose.

Know that winning or losing is not an indicator of self-worth.
