Teen Conference

Teen Conference Will you be 11-13 yrs. old before January 1? Then grab your surfboard and ukulele, and catch a wave at Teen Conference this Spring on the tropical island of Columbia, Missouri! This is the first big trip away from home for many young islanders, and it’s an awesome choice that you’ll be talking about the rest of the year. Why? Because you’ll make about 300 great new friends, learn how to be a better leader and get a heads-up on all the exciting things waiting for you as a 4-H teenager! Your State 4-H Council teens are lead-ing Teen Conference, so you know it will be exciting. Teen Conference is safe and fun, the hotel is amazing, you share a room with other friends your age, and the chaperones are great! Teen Conference starts at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25th, 2017 and ends at 11 a.m. on the 26th. Registration is open through 4-H Online until January 15. In the meantime, keep up with all the island haps at http://4h.missouri.edu/teen-conference/main, and we look forward to seeing you!

Youth Civic Leadership Summit Experience the Magic of Growing Leaders and Communities at YCLS 2017! The Youth Civic Leaders Summit (YCLS) is a statewide energizer for teens ages 14-18 and adult leaders who are engaged in leadership and ser-vice, and want to make a difference in their communities and their world! Youth and adults from a local club, council, community betterment group, afterschool program, countywide group, or organization can partici-pate together as a team. The Summit offers opportunities to gain leadership and teamwork skills, exercise youth voice and engagement, network with peers, and make new friends from Missouri and other states! Join a community of youths and adults who are uniquely preparing to step up to the leadership challenges of a new era, March 3-5, 2017! Registration is open through 4-H Online until February 1. For information visit the event page: http://4h.missouri.edu/YCLS

Opportunity to Host Exchange Students We will be hosting 12 Japanese exchange students (12-15 years) from late July through mid-August. Applications for serving as a host family can be found on the website under Global Education -https://www.states4hexchange.org/apply/host/ The requirements are that you have a host sibling within 2 years the age of the Japanese delegate and same gender. They must have their own bed (can share a room). We prefer that they have a USA family experience rather than ‘vacation/travel’ experience – just what your family would be doing at home during the time they are here. Their English skills are limited but there are many ways to communicate other than just verbal. For older 4-H members, we have the Academic Year Long exchange – these students arrive in late July/Early August from Japan, Korea and Eurasian countries to enroll as a Junior in our public high schools. Their English skills are very good and they are motivated to be a good ambassador for their country. Contact Joyce Taylor, [email protected], if you would like more details on this opportunity.

2017 4-H Agriculture Innovators Experience Nomination (Must be submitted by February 6, 2017)

Would you like to bring an engaging Ag Literacy Activity to your camp, after school program, or communi-ty? The 2017 Ag Innovator Experience is a perfect opportunity to for your teens to teach and engage young-er youth around Science and Agriculture. Missouri 4-H is seeking fifteen teens (4-H age 14-18) to serve as leaders for the 2017 4-H Agriculture Inno-vators Experience: Healthy Soils C.S.I. Challenge. Through this activity youth will participate in a STEM activi-ty while gaining an awareness and interest in agricultural careers and agriculture innovation. The format of the Challenge Activity is similar to National Youth Science Day experiments. The nomination can come from either staff or 4-H leader. Ideally the teens should be working in a youth and adult partnership team. Some examples which have been successful have been when a teen lead for the project which their club helped them accomplish, camp counselors working with 4-H staff to conduct the activity at 4-H camp, and teens working with partners in afterschool settings. More information on the project: In 2017, youth will participate in the “Healthy Soils C.S.I. Challenge”, an educational activity focusing on a natural resource critical to growing food and feeding the world. The Healthy Soils C.S.I. Challenge will engage youth as scientists to investigate soil’s life and health. Based on their soil assessment (tests), C.S.I. Soil Sleuth teams will engineer a mechanical solution for reducing the release of carbon into the atmosphere during planting season. Teams are challenged to design and build the cutter and press wheel components for a 1:64 scale no-till planter. Once created, teams will test their device attached to a Hexbug platform on a ta-ble top soil test site (3 feet long by 16 inches wide with a 1-inch travel path). C.S.I. Soil Sleuths will evaluate their solutions on the total area covered from one pass across the test site, uniformity of minimal soil dis-turbance and the ability of equipment to pull the no-till planter without stopping or getting bogged down. To be nominated the teens must: · Have a positive attitude and be excited about teaching others · Be of 4-H age 14-18 · Be able to attend a state training in Columbia, Missouri The teens will receive: · A toolkit to conduct the Challenge Activity including materials · A name tag and polo identifying them as a trainer · The opportunity to participate in a national experience Grant deliverables: · Teens and supervising adult will submit an action plan by April 11 · Teens will reach 75 youth with the challenge activity (April 1-July 15) · Teens will submit a short impact article by July 15 · Teens will respond to communication about program · Submit photos of challenge activity · Submit final report of grant activities by July 15 For questions or additional information please contact Shane Potter, [email protected], 572-882-3835.
