Jill Edwards (Class of 2013)

Hello Boone’s Lick Chapter Members! If you are anything like me, you are still looking for the perfect holiday gift for the special someone(s) in your life. You can find one at our 4th Annual Silent Auction/Raffle and Potluck this Thursday! Sally Swanson (Class of 2005) and Suzanne Wright (Class of 2005) have been busy bees picking up items for the auction – if you have anything you would like to donate, please contact them ASAP so they can have an auction bid sheet ready for it. Thanks! Sally Swanson: 573-424-1007, [email protected] Suzanne Wright: 573-864-8263, [email protected] BREAKING NEWS!!! ADDITIONAL RAFFLE ITEM ADDED! We are fortunate to again have some of Julie Youmans’ (Class of 2010) pottery on the raffle table. Similar to the Monarch Bowl (pictured below), Julie is donating two small dessert or salad ceramic plates, about 7 or 8” in size with this beautiful Monarch motif. Lovely!

Hope to see y’all on Thursday! If not, I wish you and yours Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas or whatever you might have going on festivity-wise, if at all. Just be safe, have fun, and get yourself outside for a minute. Jill

As per Boone's Lick Master Naturalist bylaws, the nominating committee is submitting the following slate of

nominees for officers for 2019:

PRESIDENT: Carolyn Flynn (Class of 2013) for 1st Term

VICE PRESIDENT: Jill Edwards (Class of 2013) for 1st Term SECRETARY: Lori Johnson (Class of 2017) for 2nd Term

TREASURER: Stephanie Michels (Class of 2016) for 1st Term

It’s almost time for officer elections – since we were not able to finalize and publish the slate of candidates fifteen days prior to our December meeting, we can EITHER delay the vote until our January 2019 chapter meeting, or perhaps someone can make a motion to suspend the rules so we can vote during our December meeting. In either case, we will have chapter officers next year, hooray!

I T ’ S T IMESHEET T IME !

It’s time to submit your Master Naturalist 2018 Timesheet! You can find the timesheet template here.

Your completed 2018 timesheet (preferably in Excel, but we also accept hardcopy and other formats) is due by Monday December 31st. If you can’t meet that deadline, please try hard to get your timehseet in as soon as possible, since our end-of-year report is due to the state in early January. You can find the timesheet instructions and the timesheet template at this link (click XLS for Excel, but non-fillable PDF is an option too): http://extension.missouri.edu/boone/masternaturalist.aspxeither. Please send your completed timesheet by email attachment to [email protected] or mail to MMN Program, University of Missouri Extension, 1012 N. Highway UU, Columbia, MO 65203-9545.

At our last chapter meeting,

the sweet was Spice Cake from Carolyn Flynn. She made it using her mama’s recipe! It received rave reviews, so I asked Carolyn to share the

recipe and it is below. Happy Holidays!

RECIPE FOR ANN’S OATMEAL SPICE CAKE From: Ann Landrum (Carolyn Flynn’s Mom!) 9” x 13” cake pan - serves 8-12 Cake:

o 1 C. Quaker (quick) oats o 1 1/4 C.s boiling water o 1 stick of butter o 1 C. white sugar o 1 C. (packed) dark brown sugar o 2 eggs, beaten o 1 1/3 C. plain flour o 1 teaspoon baking soda o 1 teaspoon cinnamon o 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg o 1/2 teaspoon salt

In medium saucepan, bring water to boil. Add oats and butter, cover, and leave for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, sift dry ingredients together in mixing bowl. Add beaten eggs, both sugars, then fold the flour mix into the oat mixture. Bake in 350 degree oven 35 minutes. Test with a toothpick in the center. Topping:

o 1 stick of butter o 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or hazelnut extract o 1/2 - 1 C. white sugar o 1 C. chopped English walnuts o 1 C. sweetened coconut flakes o 1/2- 1 C. “Half and Half” (milk and cream) or single whipping cream

Soften butter in mixing bowl til creamy yellow, then add liquid flavor and sugar, mixing well. Add nuts and coconut, then the cream to bind it. Pour the mixture over the cake, spread evenly to pan edges. Heat the oven broiler and carefully toast the topping until browned. Good luck! Store at room temperature. This cake improves with age.

Help with the Christmas Bird Count

Saturday December 15th From Mid-December through the first week in January, tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before dawn. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during

the Holiday season. Each of the citizen scientists who annually brave snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action. From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count does it for love of birds and the excitement of friendly competition -- and with the knowledge that their efforts are making a difference for science and bird conservation. Volunteers agree to count birds on the day of the count as designated by the Columbia Audubon Society. Want to help? Please contact: Laura Hillman, 573-442-3703, [email protected] Dress warm, bring water to drink, bring money for lunch, and binoculars if you have them!

ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME – we have many birders in our chapter that would be happy to help you identify bird and bird calls!
