RSYC MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 1

Dear Fellow Members of RSYC

This year 2011 marks the 185th anniversary of the establishment of the Singapore Yacht Club, the forerunner of our present Club. Singapore’s first newspaper, the Singapore Chronicle, gives our founding date as Wednesday 7 February 1826. According to the Chronicle, on the first anniversary of SYC’s founding, some members of the original club were busy surveying the sea near the Singapore River to make sure its depth had “no less water than 4 fathoms and found Ross’s soundings generally quite correct.” Ross, of course, was Capt Ross, Sir Stamford Raffles’ surveyor.

The RSYC today is kept busy taking all the necessary precautions before we carry out our plans to move with the times. Since taking office last June 2010, the Main Committee has been working closely with our consultants before we embark on the construction of the multi-storey dry stack building to house some 200 additional boats, and a new Accommodation Wing to double present capacity.

I am happy to report to you that financing and other arrangements are in progress. Tenders are expected to be awarded soon. Current plans call for construction work to begin sometime in the second quarter of this year. Some preliminary work beginning this month would be a membership survey, to be followed by a membership drive. A full schedule of construction work will be released to members, through this magazine, in due course.

With regards to the Club’s management, we are still in the process of finalising a suitable candidate to assume the position of general manager. Meanwhile, the members of the RSYC Committee are putting in extra efforts in providing guidance to the Management Team who are coping admirably with their additional duties in the absence of a GM. I want to take this opportunity to thank both the Management Team and Main Committee members for their devotion to duty and their sacrifices made to the Club.

In closing, I am reminded by the inspiring words of the President of the Yacht Club de Monaco, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, who wrote in one of YCM’s publications, a most appropriate and encouraging advice about his club, which also applies to us at RSYC today. He said: “The past is our heritage, the present our responsibility, and the future our challenge.”

May I take this opportunity to also wish all our members and friends who celebrate the Lunar New Year: “Gong Xi Fa Cai” in this Year of the Rabbit.

With best wishes

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

With the start of a new year in a new decade, 2011 promises to see renewed vigour put into boating and yacht racing at RSYC. One committee that will be kept busy is the 2011 Regatta Organising Committee headed by Rear Commodore Karl Nilssen. This issue of the Magazine will start promoting this annual regatta, set for Sunday 17 July and the weekend of 23 - 24 July. We also welcome sponsors, both old and new.

First and foremost, we have revamped our regatta website and we invite you to visit us at www.rsycregatta.org. The race dates, the Notice of Race, the Entry Form and other details are ready now, and more information will be added in the coming weeks and months. If you are a keen sailor, we invite you for your feedback and participation.

Elsewhere in this magazine, we give a bit of the recent history of the RSYC Regatta in the years 2000 to 2004. As for this 12th consecutive regatta since our move to the west coast, it is worth highlighting the inclusion of a new category of participating boats – beach catamarans – and the possible participation of Sailability Singapore, both for the first time in this regatta. I hear there are plans to have lots more fun time this year, apart from the serious racing itself. So stay tuned and check our revamped website regularly!

Moving to more immediate racing matters – and that’s only a few weeks away, from 26 to 29 January – I should mention the running of the 17th annual Singapore Straits Regatta, at the Riau Yacht Club in Batam, with Raffles Marina providing the secretariat. Next year will be our turn to host this exciting event when sailors compete fiercely for the coveted Lipton Challenge Cup as part of the South East Asia Perpetual Cup Series, together with the Raja Muda International and the Phuket King’s Cup regattas.

CALLING ALL SAILORS… and sailing enthusiasts too! The planning for the 2011 RSYC Regatta is now in full swing. An

organizing committee has been formed, comprising Messrs Karl Nilssen (chairman), Neo Wee Sim, Christopher Nunns, Kevin Lim and Glen O’Grady. If you feel you can contribute to the successful running of this event, we’d like to hear from you.

Elsewhere in this magazine are several reports about this major annual event in continuous running since year 2000. This year there will be a new class under beach catamarans and we also welcome the participation of Sailability Singapore. There are also other sailing activities and courses for novices who may wish to get on the water for the first time.

THE SINGAPORE STRAITS REGATTAHave a hankering to visit Batam in Indonesia? This month of January may be a good time to join some friends, or form your own group, to visit the Nongsa Point Resort & Marina. Join in the festivities associated with running of the 17th Singapore Straits Regatta. This annual event is on, from 26 to 29 January.

The SSR counts towards the contest for the coveted Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup, along with the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta in Malaysia and the recently-concluded Phuket King’s Cup Regatta in Thailand. By the way, it will be our turn to host the 2012 SSR in January next year.

ABOUT TERM MEMBERSHIPMembers are requested to please note that there has been a change in eligibility for Term Membership. With effect from 1 December 2010, Singapore citizens and those with Permanent Resident status are no longer allowed to sign up as Term Members, a category of RSYC Membership that is available now to non-Singaporeans only.

CAR PARKING PRIVILEGES FOR MEMBERSPlease also note that with effect from 1 January 2011, all members will be entitled to two complimentary car parking labels per membership. In the past, members may register as many cars as they wish, with the understanding that only two cars will enjoy free parking at any one time. The Main Committee has decided to “simplify” the ruling to avoid any confusion. Some members will need to inform the Club office which two cars (if they own more than two) they wish to register or keep in our system. Any other cars will be subject to normal parking fees.

CLUB SURVEY OF MEMBERSHIPWe have commissioned a market research firm to conduct an online survey for us in January 2011. This will help us uncover the preferences or desires of our members and provide them with an avenue for feedback. The results of the survey will also help us plan better events and services and to meet members’ needs.

TWO COMMITTEE MEMBERS STEP DOWNAfter serving for a number of years on the RSYC Committee, Mr Nigel Ho and Mr Eric Lee Ah Kwan have stepped down late last year due to work commitments and travel. Mr Ho and Mr Lee have been very active in many Club events. We thank both of them for their many contributions to the Club.

SPECIALS AT JACKPOT ROOMIf you go to the Jackpot Room these days, don’t be surprised to see some innovative ideas being put into action. From 1 February, an a la carte menu will be introduced, replacing the present supper items. Some new games are also being created almost every

month. And with most interesting prizes too. For example, in the Progressive Reward Scheme starting in January, the top prize is a “mega bonus” valued at $3,800 and it includes a one night’s stay at our sea view apartment suite, plus a $500 F&B voucher. More news about Jackpots on page 24.

F&B OUTLET CLOSURES DURINGLUNAR NEW YEARThe Beacon, The Bridge, The Mess and KTV Lounge will be closed on the first day of Lunar New Year, Thursday 3 February 2011. The Wharf will remain open serving a smaller menu and the operating hours remain unchanged.

CELEBRATING LUNAR NEW YEARSlowly becoming a tradition, there’s going to be a mahjong competition at the Quarterdeck on Friday 11 February starting at 7.00pm.

There are plenty of lovely prizes, plus an appropriate Chinese buffet dinner, with yu sheng lo hei for prosperity in the Year of the Rabbit.

THIS ISSUE OF MAGAZINE MAY BE LATEThe year-end production of a magazine is always a big challenge. There are staff and contributors clearing their annual leave or taking holiday trips, not to mention the shortened work week and printers coping with seasonal printing orders.

We apologise to members if this issue of the magazine arrives a little late.

thinly-sliced beef is quickly seared, combined with medley of other nourishing and tasty vegetables and other ingredients, then simmered in a broth of sake, mirin and soy sauce.

RSYC MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 19

Editor’s Note: In the decade of the 1990s, the RSYC Committee and the Club as a whole were preoccupied with securing a new site on the west coast of Singapore and the building of its clubhouse and marina. RSYC moved from Jalan Buroh to 52 West Coast Ferry Road in August 1999. The new premises were officially opened by our Patron and former President of Singapore, the late Mr Ong Teng Cheong, on 17 June 2000. The following are excerpts from past RSYC Magazines.

2000 REGATTA“RSYC is proud to organize the RSYC Regatta 2000, our first sailing regatta after a lapse of many years. Among the (22) entries is RSYC’s newly-acquired J-24 named “Dreammotor” after its sponsor.”

The regatta was held over three consecutive Sundays, on 9, 16 and 23 July 2000, with a total of five races, each starting at 1300 hrs, in the vicinity of the Southern Islands at Selat Pauh and Raffles Reserve waters.” (from the July/Aug 2000 magazine)

“After a lapse of many years, we saw a fleet of six J-24s competing in their very own class. The first race held on 9 July was “a fight all the way to the finish with just two minutes separating the first four boats. Race 1 was won by “Juno” (skipper Tim Tan). Second was “The Dogs” (skipper Mark Jewell) and third “Foxy Lady” (skipper Bill Bremner). In the final overall placings, “Juno” won the IRC and J-24 divisions and the Pulau Jong Challenge Cup, while “Fizbizz” took the RSYC Sailing Committee 1934 Challenge Cup in the PY division.

The organizing committee was chaired by Raphael Phang and consisted of Gordon Maxted, Peter Dunlop and Mark Ray. (from the Sept/Oct 2000 magazine)

2001 REGATTAThis is the second regatta in the current series. A new format -- on Sunday 15 July followed by a weekend 21 and 22 July -- was introduced. 23 yachts participated over five races, although Race 2 had to be abandoned due to Race 1 over-running. Race 3 on Saturday 21 July was a passage race around Pulau Semakau and up to Raffles Light, with the last two races finishing on the third day. Overall winners were “Juno” (Tim Tan/Richard Ahl) in the IRC and J-24 divisions, while “Irvmiren” helmed by Hans Hvide took the PY division. Organising Committee: Raphael Phang (Chairman), Roger Debreceny, Kent Goeking, Graham Lind, Mark Ray and Mohd Ashraf KC Tan. (from Sept/Oct 2001 magazine)

2002 REGATTAObviously experimenting with new formats, the 3rd regatta was run on two full weekends, 20-21 and 27-28 July, allowing seven races to be held. Vice commodore that year (Raphael Phang) reported that the “regatta was very well received by all participants.” He added that “while the number of

Page 23: RSYC Magazine January/February 2011

RSYC MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 21

entries for this year’s event was down compared to last year’s, it is significant to note that the number of new RSYC boats and RSYC members participating has increased.”

The overall results: “Pla Loma” (Keith Moore) won the IRC division, “Simba” (Bob Ashman) the PY division, and “Juno” (Tim Tan) the J-24. Organising Committee: Raphael Phang (chairman), Roger Debreceny, Kent Goeking, Graham Lind, Mohd Ashraf KC Tan. (from Sept/Oct 2002 magazine)

2003 REGATTAAgain, a four-day format over two weekends, 19-20 and 26-27 July saw the completion of seven races. A total of 25 boats were at the starting line on the first day. Overall results: IRC A and B honours went to “Pla Loma” (Keith Moore) and “Juno” (Tim Tan) respectively, while “Road Runner 2” (Tan Kay Toh) won in the PY division. Kent Goeking was chairman of the Sailing Sub-Committee that had 12 other members. (from Sept/Oct 2003 magazine)

2004 REGATTA“What a great regatta!” was the resounding refrain from the participants. They loved the racing on good courses with great winds. They were impressed with the record number of (32) boats that participated. They were pleased with RSYC’s hospitality and social functions.

Needless to say, this 5th running of the RSYC Regatta was an unqualified success, reported Kent Goeking, Chairman of the RSYC Sailing Sub-Committee and a keen yacht racer in his boat ”Solarmax”.

The 2004 regatta consisted of two days of windward/leeward races, and one passage race that made up the three-day event on 18, 24 and 25 July. A change from the four-day format of previous regattas but one that was well received by participants.

This year the passage race started in Raffles Reserve and went around the southern side of Semakau Island, then around Cyrene reef and back to the Club. The overall winners: IRC A division – “Foxy Lady” (Bill Bremner)IRC B – “KT2” (David Low)Sports boat – “Platu” (Choo Tze Wei)PY – “Velera Linda” (Chris Nunns)(sourced from Sept/Oct 2004 magazine)

So much for now. More reports of past regattas will be in the next magazine.

View from an avidsailing member,Dr Kent GoekingThe following is an excerpt from the May/June 2004 Magazine, written by Dr Kent Goeking, who played an important role in the annual regattas in the early 2000s. Dr Goeking is currently an absent member since his re-location to Bangkok in July 2010. “As Sailing Sub-Committee Chairman (in 2003/04), I want to take this opportunity to reflect on how far our sailing program has come in the past few years.

When I first started sailing at RSYC a little over three years ago, there were but a handful of sailors and only one club J-24 which we took turns skippering. From the moment I set foot in the Club, I can still remember how impressed I was with the great sailing potential of the new

club location, the splendid trophy case, and a world-class yachting heritage. From that moment I began to dream about how RSYC could rekindle that aspect of its past glory.

Through hard work of the Sailing Sub-Committee over the past few years our sailing program has now become well established, with a full calendar of events and a strong group of enthusiastic participants. Our fleet of private sailboats combined with the Club’s J-24 fleet continues to grow and makes for very exciting club series racing, enjoyable twilight racing, competitive J-24 match racing, and adventurous cruising programs.

In July this year (2004), we will again host our annual RSYC Regatta. This is a major event in the Singapore yachting calendar and we hope to draw 25-30 boats to participate….”

‘Quagmires delay completion of the branch-line railway between Bukit Timah station and Jurong’, wrote The Straits Times in the summer of 1965; and there are quagmires still today! For 30 or so years the 24 km branch line conveyed cement clinker, iron ore and timber from Malaysia to the heavy industries and wharves of Jurong port via 5 tunnels, 8 bridges and 22 cuttings.

On Sunday morning 19 December, we small group of doughty club members and guests squelched our way, for nearly three hours, along part of this disused track from near King Albert Park towards Jurong via Clementi Road and Ulu Pandan.

A gradient marker and signal light box, with crunchy granite chippings, rotting sleepers and occasional narrow gauge steel rails beneath our feet, reminded us that once this was a functional railway.

The track is now a glorious green linear lung of secondary tropical forest and Kid our guide was to introduce us to those familiar and

not so familiar plant species, as we scrambled, slithered and splashed along.

We discovered that the statuesque orange-red Flame of the Forest tree, known also as the African Tulip Tree, was introduced to Singapore in the early 20th century, as a decorative shade tree to line the roads. It was too shallow rooted to withstand violent tropical storms without toppling and shedding branches, so specimens were removed.

However, natural promiscuous seeding ensured that such magnificent trees still abound in wild spaces. Kid also pointed out to us Giant Albizias, Durian, Bread Fruit and many Ficus species so vital to birds. He explained the life cycle of the fig wasp which has guaranteed that I shall never eat a fig again! He pointed out Rubber trees: indicator species of previously cultivated land, and architectural tree ferns, beloved of landscape gardeners. Then came the tastings of wild ginger, pepper and cinnamon. We spotted

tapioca, bananas and yams. Kid told us the tale of Dieffenbachia or Dumb Cane, the leaf of which contains highly toxic calcium oxalate crystals which, if ingested, render the eater dumb for three days: a child tamer, he quipped. He explained the ingenious feeding habits of the epiphytic Bird’s Nest fern, the open crown of which permits the collection and retention of organic matter, which rots releasing nutrients to the plant.

Now towards the end of our adventure, we scrambled out of our verdant tranquil cutting to teeter across two rusty riveted iron bridges over Sungei Ulu Pandan and Sunset Way. These bridges seemed to me like mouths of old teeth: past usefulness with gaps and stumps, little holding them together. I was told that the views were stunning but I had my eyes firmly fixed on terra firma on the far bank. Photo opportunities were taken by the brave. It is said that wedding photos are taken here....

Clementi was our final destination. We paused for a mud wash-off in water drawn by bucket from a well and to savour a community herb and vegetable garden by a Chinese Temple.
