Dear Fellow Members
As we start a brand new year, may I send you and your family the Season's Greetings and the Committee's best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
The RSYC Committee would also like to thank members for their recent contribution to the Staff Hong Bao Fund and the money is being distributed to all our staff, as is customary at this time of the year, in appreciation of their dedicated services.
I also want to acknowledge the members' support of the Club's activities this past year and to thank them for keeping the Club lively and vibrant. 2011 has been a challenging year as we undertook to meet the needs and wants of Club members. As you can see, the first half of the Dry Stack (on Zone B) has been completed. We now await the TOP (temporary occupation permit) from the relevant authorities.
Another important development in 2012 is the change in operation of our dry berthing facilities as we move from trailer-based carriers to a modern, more efficient multi-storey dry stack. We thank all our boat owners for their continued co-operation and understanding as we switch from one mode to another, to keep up with the times.
As we start 2012, I appeal to members to introduce more friends, colleagues or neighbors, especially those with boating interests, to the Club. We need to enlarge our membership base. We have the berthing facilities. There seems to be increased interest in sea sports and the sport of competitive sailing among our younger population also needs nurturing and encouragement. There are great family-bonding opportunities here.
We also welcome members' suggestions on maximizing the use of our facilities when we complete our Development projects towards the end 2012. Two possibilities that come to mind are where should we re-locate our Mahjong Room (that used to be on Level 2) and how we can make good use of the “roof-garden” space on top of the expanded Marina Lodge. Can we also improve other common areas? Your suggestions are most welcome.
Let's all work together and try to make 2012 a good year – if not a great year – for sailing and boating, and family-life as a whole. It's the year of the Olympics and there are sailing events to look forward to. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

Dear Members,
First of all, I thank all Members who have so generously contributed to this year's Staff Hong Bao Fund. It is rewarding to see that so many Members appreciate the service and dedication of our employees. The monies collected will, as in previous years, be distributed such that lower paid team members receive a larger amount than those who have a higher salary. Thank you on behalf of all our staff.
2011 ended with a bang - the New Year's Eve celebrations at The Bridge and The Wharf. Moving on, in 2012, our overall aim will be to make the Club a more interesting and vibrant place for all Members. You will see more frequent menu changes in all outlets, more food and beverage promotions and activities, more interesting events and an attractive sea sports programme.
The next large event is the Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) that will be held at the end of
January. Every year, this regatta is organised by a different club and this year is the RSYC's turn to lead the organisation. The planning of this regatta has been an interesting and challenging undertaking, but with the assistance of SingaporeSailing and all the other clubs involved in this event, it was a positive experience. Although, having said that, it was very challenging to generate sufficient sponsorship to cover all costs. You find more about the SSR in the following pages of this magazine.
You will also find more information about the host of other activities, promotions and events that will take place over the next two months. Celebrations and food offers around Chinese New Year take centre stage in January. For the romantics and all of you who simply wish to show your appreciation to your loved one, do not miss the Valentine's Day dinner at The Bridge. And then there are of course some special occasions for children and adults to learn something,
to meet or simply to enjoy each other's company.
Do take the time to peruse the magazine and mark those events in your diary. Similarly, do let us know if you have any suggestions and feedback on the type of activity you wish to see at your Club.
I wish you a Happy Chinese New Year.
With best wishes,
Werner TrachselGeneral Manager

DEVELOPMENT
Dear Members
Now that the Zone B area of the Dry Stack is completed, work has commenced on the Zone C area. The dismantling of the boat shed has been completed and this will be followed by the ground preparation work for the erection of the second half of the stacker building. It is expected that this Zone C Stacker Building will be completed by end January 2012, weather permitting.
Meanwhile, management will be conducting the berth allocation for the boats currently in the Club.
As for the Accommodation Wing, piling work will commence shortly now that all below-ground issues have been resolved. The Accommodation block (on Zone A) is due to be completed in the third quarter of 2012. When completed, the expanded Marina Lodge will have about 60 rooms and suites with additional common facilities for members.
The special Marina Bull LoPRO forklift purchased from the Wiggins Company in the USA is now in operation. Two specialist trainers from Australia were at our marina for one week in mid-November to give hands-on training to the two staff forklift operators and a relief driver as well. However, we have found that our drivers will require more training and practice. We are therefore actively looking at hiring an experienced marina fork lift operator.

Trainer's profileChiu Fang's passion for imparting knowledge to others came from a young age, clearly
manifested in her early career as a teacher. However, along with her growing interest in craftwork and Floral Arrangement & Design, she has made a switch from teaching academic subjects to conducting floral arrangement classes.
Since acquiring her Professional Certificate
and Diploma in Floristry Management
she is even more
passionate about floral arrangement & design. Floral Arrangement is not just about arranging flowers anymore. It has taken a new meaning and new height as Singapore is now being recognised internationally in the floristry scene. It is becoming an Art & Design work.
Course StructureThis basic course consists of 8 lessons conducted once a week over a period of 2 months. Each
lessons is 2 hours and the course syllabus covers the round, horizontal, triangle, asymmetrical triangle, vertical, parallel, inverted T and crescent-shaped forms.
During the lesson, students will be shown how to arrange the different forms and practise using sticks first before using the actual flowers. Once they are comfortable on how to arrange the flowers using the sticks then only can they proceed to do it with the actual flowers.
On top of the 8 basics forms of floral arrangement, students will also be taught how to condition flowers and soaking & preparation of floral foam as well as the safety aspect of handling tools and equipment. This will be done during the first lesson.
Price: $440.00 for 8 sessions (Member) & $480.00 for 8 sessions (Guest). Require a minimum of 6 participants to proceed. Includes: Course materials & 8 take-home floral arrangements. Cancellations received after 1 February 2012 will be billed in full.

SINGAPORE STRAITS REGATTA
The 18th Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) will be held in Singapore and Indonesian waters off Batam immediately after the Lunar New Year holidays, from Thursday 26 January for the next five days.
Taking turn by rotation to organise the regatta, this will be the third time that RSYC helms the annual event, the last time being in 2007. This year, the participating clubs and marinas forming the Organising Committee have increased from five to seven, with ONE 15 Marina and Marina at Keppel Bay joining in for the first time. We welcome them aboard. The SSR is an event sanctioned by Singapore Sailing Federation and has its own website at http://straitsregatta.com
At the time of going to press, the skippers of several well-known yachts including Wala Wala 2, Rikki Tiki Tavi and Todak 2 have signed up. It should be noted that Wala Wala 2 performed rather well in the recently concluded Phuket Kings Cup Regatta by coming in second to a powerful newcomer, Japan's Karasu, skippered by owner Yasuo Nanamori.
Other boats rumoured to be registering soon are Windsikher (winner of the Corum RSYC Regatta this July 2011), Seabass, Hakuna Matata, O' Blue Eyes and RSYC Satu and RSYC Dua. Additionally, there
are 4 to 6 Corsair trimarans and an equal number of Laser SB3 – making a total of some 21 boats so far. SMU may also enter their two platus.
This year's SSR will have a good mix of fun races as well as the usual challenging one known as the “Batam leg”. The fun part will be a number of passage races along the popular East Coast, close enough for shore spectators to view their colourful sails and enjoy some exciting moments. But for the sailors, the challenging event of course will be the Batam leg on Monday 30 January after the boaters transit to the Nongsa Point Marina & Resort.
The regatta will end with a dinner on 31 January at Nongsa Point Marina & Resort when all present will witness the overall winner lift the prestigious Lipton Challenge Cup that was last won by Evolution Sailing, helmed by Ray Roberts of Australia. Wonder if the redoubtable Mr Roberts will defend his title this year?

HERITAGE
Editor's note: On 12 December 2011, Mr Michael Madden, Honorary Secretary of the Deben Yacht Club in Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK, wrote to us with some interesting heritage information about Deben YC, RSYC and the common link of these two reciprocal clubs: the late Mr Max Blake, our commodore in 1919. We thank Mr Madden for sharing the following information with us:
“Our archives show the origin (of this special relationship) was in a member of our club, Max Blake, who worked in Singapore for a substantial period in the early 20th century. During that time he helped in 1919 to encourage the growth of a Singapore yacht club to promote more organized dinghy sailing in your waters.
“Max had to return to Woodbridge in the UK in 1929 and when he returned, he was given 100 Straits dollars by your club in recognition of his services to sailing there, on condition that it be used to purchase a special trophy for his UK home club. Accordingly, in 1930 our club purchased a trophy in London for (British pound) 11-13s-6d (old Imperial coinage) which we have ever since called our Singapore Cup. It is a beautiful object as I trust you will see from the attachment with this email.”
Mr Madden concluded by adding: “The trophy
remains in good condition, in annual circulation and much cherished by its holders and by the club. Its current holder is Ruth Naude who received it at our presentation evening on 19 November.”
This prompted me to do some additional researching on Max Blake. – K.C. Yuen, RSYC Editor
W illiam Maxwell Blake was born in 1874 at Bramerton Hall, near Norwich, England. Son of a vicar, he was educated at
Woodbridge School and apprenticed at two nearby boatyards, before moving to Singapore in 1901 to work. He later qualified as a naval architect and became a manager for a shipyard and timber sawmill known as Riley Hargreaves which was taken over by United Engineers in 1914.
In 1919, after the end of World War One in Europe, Blake and 31 other keen sailors in Singapore decided to start or revive the Singapore Yacht Club (SYC) that was located near his employer's shipyard at Tanjong Rhu. While busy building yachts for enthusiasts, he also became commodore of SYC (forerunner of today's RSYC) for a brief period in 1919, before going back to England in 1920 on extended home leave.
On his return to Singapore, Blake took an active part in local sailing and the SYC grew rapidly from strength to strength. It had to move to larger and permanent premises at Trafalgar Street leased from the Singapore Harbour Board (now the PSA or Port of Singapore Authority). A new clubhouse was built quickly and opened in December 1920 by the then

Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Laurence Guillemard, himself a keen sailor who later became commodore of RSYC from 1922 to ‘27. It was during Guillemard's time that the Club obtained British royal patronage and it became known as Royal Singapore Yacht Club (1922 to 1967).
During his Singapore sojourn in the 1920s, Blake designed and built many successful yachts for sailing aficionados. He took a deep interest in the new six-metre class boats – one of which named “Monsoon” was built by him and he shipped her to England and raced her at Cowes. Blake retired in 1929 and left Singapore to live in England. He died in June 1939, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Interestingly, Max Blake was the first winner of the prestigious Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Trophy when his yacht “Polly” won the inaugural race in 1923. His only daughter Kathleen Blake (1910-94) was born in Singapore and was married to M.H. (Maxwell Heron) Matheson, who was also a commodore of RSYC (1936-38).
Blake's “home” club was the Deben Yacht Club in Suffolk, UK, founded in 1838, and together with RSYC (established in 1826), are considered two of the 20 oldest yacht clubs in the world still in operation today.

On a relaxing Saturday morning of 22 October 2011, enthusiastic participants who have signed up for the “Introduction to Sport Fishing Workshop and Demonstration” event.
For most, fishing was perceived as a relaxing and/or boring activity. That perception had changed under this trainer, as this sport is as dynamic as it awakens your senses to your environment and your understanding the right tools for a good catch.
Participants found the workshop to be highly
informative, engaging and interactive throughout the session.
Not only did the trainer impart and demonstrate the technicalities of fishing, he shared that the whole experience in sports fishing should not only be focused on catching a fish, but rather, to enjoy the whole outdoor experience, whether on your own or to spend quality
bonding time with your family and friends.
Here's another fruitful way to spend your weekend!

What a better way of giving a simple self-made gift to your friends and loved ones during the Christmas season with a Gingerbread Man.
The kids had a wonderful time making Gingerbread Man on the 16 November 2011. All were excited
in learning from making the dough, to the icing and decorating the Gingerbread Man. The kids got a chance to have a close-up view of the baking methods used, under the guidance of Chef Martin and Chef Daniel.
Each child had a hands-on experience in kneading and rolling the dough, to exploring their creativity in decorating the Gingerbread Man.
Finally, a certificate was presented to each participant together with the recipe for them to take home.

Twenty-two marine life enthusiasts, both parents and children, participated at the Underwater World Camp on Sentosa on 28 – 29 November 2011.
Upon arrival, they were greeted and welcomed by two knowledgeable, cheerful and heart-warming facilitators who guided them throughout the two days with educational talks, tours, games & quizzes and “Meet-The-Dolphin” session. It gave the children and parents
opportunities for personal encounters with marine life and to appreciate and value marine life conservation efforts.
Nevertheless, the highlight of it all was to snuggle in the tunnel, in sleeping bags, together with marine friends: the sharks, sting-rays and all the different species of fishes.
Finally, there was a prize and certificate presentation by the facilitators to the children and parents. One of the kids
said, “This is the best camp I've attended this year!” Other children wanted a longer camp.
For some parents, it was a good time of bonding with their children, and for some, it was re-living their childhood memories through their little ones.
Both parents and children enjoyed themselves thoroughly at the Underwater World Camp this year and requested for more of such camps to come!

SAILING NEWS
Missing the 2007 SEA Games after winning the trials, to focus on Olympic qualifier and having sailing left out of the 2009 edition. The 4 year long wait, which felt like an eternity, made me hungrier for a medal, but I guess it's better late than never.
The 26th SEA Games was held in Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia from 11 to 22 November 2011. Sailing was hosted in Jakarta, where the sailing venue was at Ancol Marina, which was actually part of a theme park. It was quite funny that whilst sailing, you could actually hear the piercing screams of the riders on the roller coasters, and seconds later, sailors would be looking around confused, trying to identify where the screams came from. After a while we all became attuned with the screams.
The distance from our hotel to the club was only less than 10km. However, with Jakarta being known for their notorious traffic jams, our daily commute took around 40min with police escort and over an hour without one. My best friend during the commute soon became my reliable mp3 player and sleep to drown myself from the frustration and to keep myself relaxed prior to racing.
The conditions there were similar to Singapore with light to moderate breeze of 6-12knots, with short and messy chops. The heat was more intense with temperatures reaching high in the 30s, which was quite unbearable at times. But it only made me more eager to get out on water, to feel more breeze and cool down.
The fleet size in the SEA Games was much smaller than I am usually used too. With that in mind, I had to approach the regatta with a more conservative strategy. As the point difference between each competitor is close, consistency is paramount in having a shot at a shiny medal.
However, minutes after the first start of the opening day, I had an incident with another competitor. This eventually led to a disqualification after a jury hearing. Fortunately, my coach and team mates were supportive. Also, all the past mental training and preparation also proved effective. I was able to focus on the process and managed to hit the reset button to start afresh, claiming the gold medal at the end of the games.
Overall Singapore had an outstanding performance, finishing 2nd nation overall, with 4 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronzes, narrowly losing out to Thailand's 4 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze.
I would like to thank my family who gave me a surprise visit, my coach, team mates, support staff and NTU for their support.
Using this win as a stepping stone, my next aim is to get myself selected for the London 2012 Olympics and do Singapore proud.

MARINE NEWS
PORT MARINE NOTICENo. 6 of 2011
16 August 2011
With effect from 1 January 2012, the PPCDL (Powered Pleasure Craft Driving Licence) Course will be valid for pleasure crafts below 24 metres ONLY.
Pleasure crafts 24 metres OR MORE will require the driver to hold an Advanced Powered Pleasure Craft Driving Licence (“APPCDL”).
The APPCDL in essence will augment the PPCDL for drivers of pleasure crafts 24 metres and above henceforth from 1 January 2012. This regulation comes into effect with the inputs from industry peers who saw the need for an Advanced PPCDL to cater to an increasing trend of larger and more sophisticated pleasure craft operating within the port limits. It is therefore imperative to enhance the standard and competency of those who wish to handle these pleasure craft.
In light of the congregated observation from industry peers, SSA and SBIA have encouraged such move of having the Advanced PPCDL to cater to this market of bigger pleasure crafts which allows skippers of such pleasure crafts who then can better manoeuvre these crafts with more ease.
MPA has appointed the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) as the APPCDL course and examination provider. SMA can be contacted at +65 6772-1316.
One of the prerequisites requires the candidate to accumulate 24 boating trips as the person in charge of a powered pleasure craft (in the preceding 2 years) before taking the APPCDL. The candidate's boating experience will be completed and submitted to SMA in the format of “MPA Boating Experience Logsheet”. The Logsheet serves to detail the candidate's boating experience for the purpose of enrolment to the APPCDL course and examination.
The Logsheet has itemized the boating experience to include:

CLUB INFORMATION
The new F46 from Sealine. To explore our extensive range of motor yachts visit www.sealine.com SHARE THE ADVENTURE.
“I’d planned our course meticulously, but kept it a secret from the kids. I could sense their excitement, when a mysterious island appeared on the horizon.
