    The RR Builders: Answers

    Number in order for the railway to be completed properly.

    _ 8_ Track Layers : placed wooden ties on completed roadbed and laid 2steel rails on top, securing the rails to the ties with fishplates andspikes.

    __4_ Transit Crews : used an instrument called a Transit to calculatedistances on curves, lakes and mountains so that the next crewcould calculate the elevation.

    __1_ Surveyors : traveled through the thick forests deciding on and then

    marking the trial line.

    __7_ Navvies : built the solid roadbed, packing down 2 layers ofcrushed stone (ballast and sub-ballast) which was then flattenedwith a giant scraper pulled by horses.

    __5_ Levelling Gangs : used a railway level to mark the height abovesea level, leaving a mark every half mile to indicate elevation.

    __3_ Measuring Gangs : arrived next and measured with a chain 30.5 mlong and pounded in a numbered stake that indicated the distancefrom their starting point.

    __6_ Topographers : followed the levellers and recorded information aboutthe physical conditions that existed 30.5 m on each side of the trialline, indicating rivers, mountains, swamps, etc.

    _2__ Grading Gangs : followed the path marked by the surveyors andcleared the pat h.
