To find out, be sure and come to our September Luncheon Program, which will feature ornithological photographer, William "Bill" Kees. Bill was born in Corning and almost immediately moved with his parents to Orland. After graduating from Orland High School in 1961, he received a BA in history from Pacific Lutheran University in 1965 and a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in 1970. He and his wife Carolyn then spent the next 36 years serving as a Lutheran pastor and RN, respectively. They both retired and moved to Chico in 2006, where they remain active as Spiritual Directors and members of Faith Lutheran Church. Bill became active in photographing birds in 2010. When Carolyn noted that he had a good eye for capturing a bird in a photograph, Bill decided he needed to develop his visual learning side. Since then, on his daily walks, he has taken pictures of about 130 species of different birds. He will focus his September program on the birds of Chico. Big Sir Message Welcome to September, gentlemen. And congratulations on being recognized as the Best Branch in SIR for 2018 at our recent State meeting. To 2018 Big Sir Dave Rush and BEC, excellent job leading our Branch to the pinnacle of success. Per our State President Ed Benson, “Bidwell Branch 110, Chico -- an excellent Branch excelling on all criteria. Their extra efforts to provide assistance to the Paradise and Magalia Branches pushed them to the top. The award was richly deserved. Congratulations to you, the Branch leaders and the members.” Speaking of the State Meeting, I’d like to provide a brief overview of where SIR is going as envisioned by our current State Officers. Our Mission: To enhance the lives of our members through fun activities, events and luncheons while making Friends for Life. In The Eye of the Beholder Have you ever wondered what kind of bird that is chirping outside your bedroom window? To find out, be sure and come to our September Luncheon Program, which will feature ornithological photographer, William "Bill" Kees. Bill was born in Corning and almost immediately moved with his parents to Orland. Piscatology

Fishing with a Geezer is an art you need to hone.

Offer him a new lure, he’ll choose to use his own. Though it’s dull and lost its color, he knows it’ll

catch a fish.

So, hooking one more on it, is his cherished wish.

Eight Sirs travelled to Bucks Lake the last week in August. The fishing was great for some and slow for others. Seems the kind of lure used made a difference. Vic Fisher and his boat partner caught the most trout. Camp was near the beach and tales were shared around a camp fire at night.

Our next voyage will be to Lake Almanor on

September 17-18-19. Don Phillips and Robin Thompson will be our hosts at their homes there. If you enjoy fishing, join us for breakfast on the second Thursday of each month at the Cozy Diner at 7:45 AM. Bob Weckerle 864-6698.

Hiking The hope is to have something planned for October, so watch for the details.

Cars, Coffee & Donuts Our next Cars n Coffee gathering will be at the residence of Gary Marquis.

His address is 661 Stilson Canyon Road, Chico, CA 95928 on September 24. Gary is very involved with the Concours car show at the Butte Creek Country Club, which took place August 31. He is a major car buff. Below is a list of his collection of cars that we will be able to check out on September 24. 2007 Morgan Aero8 1973 Citroen SM 3liter 1973 Citroen 2CV "Deux Chevaux" 1972 Citroen DS 21 Safari 1967 Lotus Elan Coupe 1958 Morgan +4 4seater 1956 Jaguar XK 140 Coupe 1935 Morgan MX4 Super Sports trike and a 1961 Airstream Bambi Be there at 9 AM, bring your coffee and chair, if you want to sit and rest. Donuts will be provided. A $2.00 donation will help offset the cost of the donuts. Any questions, call Joe Silbernagel at 530-680-1452

Out To Lunch (OTL) There will NOT be an OTL for September because of the BBQ on September 27! For more information, contact Bill McNelley at 530-228-7948 or bmcnelley@csuchico,edu

Woodworking At our only meeting in August, Craig Lindquist ripped strips of various maple and walnut for a new butcher block project. Bill Gebhardt showed us a model railroad turntable he had made years ago (see photo), and was now making a carry case for it. Michael Kobelt sanded a workbench tool tray (see photo). Because of our individual schedules, the group will not meet again until Thursday, October 3rd. Wood Tip - I had a radial arm saw for many years (see cartoon), and had a healthy respect for it because of the way it operated. When ripping a board you push it into an overhead blade with teeth spinning at 100 miles/hour - in your direction. To avoid the blade throwing the wood back at you at 100 mph (called kickback), you have to:

set the blade guard very close to the top of the wood piece.

set the anti-kickback pawls so they just ride on top if the wood.

set the depth of cut so the blade teeth are slightly below the bottom of the wood piece.

feed the board slowly, then use a push stick near the end.

use a featherboard to keep the work piece pushed against the fence.

stay focused.

The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Bill’s shop. Note there will be no meetings this September. Call Bill Gebhardt at 879-0429 or Craig Lindquist at 898-8483 for info.

Big Sir Message continued In the past year, SIR statewide has lost three

branches (114 vs. 117) and 3% of our total membership (13,287 vs. 13,718). Our State Officers strongly feel that offering more activities both statewide and locally will help with recruitment and retention of members. They championed the ideas of Branches getting together to take advantage of each other’s activities, i.e. Golf and Bowling. One example that surfaced multiple times during the meeting as an example of branches working together was the success of the Butte County Branch Luncheon. The state dignitaries in attendance were very impressed with how the four branches worked together to pull off a very successful event. As host branch, Bidwell Branch 110 has helped set the bar for a Branch standard SIR would like to see emulated throughout all branches. Outstanding job, gentlemen.

At our upcoming meeting I will go into more detail on the metrics used to designate the Best Branch award and we will celebrate our 30 Plus Year Members. So please block September 23rd on your calendar to attend our luncheon. And as always, bring a friend with you to share in the enjoyment. Introduce them to the new friends in their lives they haven’t met yet.
