2014 Annual Report

RMHC of the Bluegrass Annual Report 20142

Donor and volunteer support makes it possible for us to serve thousands of families each year who travel from near and far so that their children can receive the best health care available in Kentucky. Our programs provide a safe and supportive haven for families facing health challenges bigger than they could ever have imagined.

“The House that love built” isn’t just a slogan for us. It is each of you reading this report and hundreds of others all giving their part to make sure we are available for the children and their families who need us. I hope what you read in this annual report inspires you to continue and even deepen your support and involvement with Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass.

Best wishes,

Vicky MyersVicky Myers 2014 RMHC of the Bluegrass Board President

RMHC of the Bluegrass Annual Report 20143

As a Community Outreach intern at Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass, I did not realize I would be meeting people who would inspire me and change my outlook on life.

Heather Redington and her three children, Zoe, Zanna, and Zion stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for only a week, but I immediately fell in love with the whole family. The children were filled with excitement, giving me hugs and taking goofy pictures with my phone!

The Redington family are no strangers to the Ronald McDonald House. In fact, Heather Redington and her children had been guests of the Ronald McDonald House in Orange County, California where daughter Zoe was having open heart surgery. Heather loved the House so much that she started cooking for the other guests and volunteering in her spare time. Little did Heather know that she and her children would be making a trip to another Ronald McDonald House, this time across the country in Lexington, Kentucky. “The kids could not wait

to go back to Ronald McDonald House,” said Heather.

Heather and her 12 year old daughter, Zoe, 7 year old daughter, Zanna, and 6 year old son, Zion checked in at the Ronald McDonald House in Lexington and began making daily trips to Shriner’s Hospital just a few miles down the road. Zion was receiving his brand new prosthetic legs having been born with only one finger on each hand and one toe on each foot. (This condition is known as Ectrodactyly.)

The doctors at Shriner’s thought it would be best to amputate Zion’s feet due to the pain that they were causing him when he walked. Heather explained to me how fearful Zion was about the operation. “I am going to miss my feet,” said Zion to his mother before the operation. Leading up to the operation on December 21, 2012, Heather made Zion a special doll that looked just like him and was wearing a super hero cape. Once Zion had his surgery, she cut off the dolls feet and together they named him “Little Zion.”

Zion received his prosthetic legs and feet from Shriner’s Hospital and was walking the very same day. “The doctor told me that this was very unusual for children,” said Heather. Although this was a breakthrough day for Zion, it was a long day, too. “Mom, I just want to go home to Ronald McDonald House,” proclaimed Zion. Everyone at the House could not believe that the same boy who had arrived in a wheelchair was now walking on his brand new legs! Of course that same day “Little Zion” received his brand new legs as well as matching shoes!

The Redingtons are now back in their hometown of Tennessee and Heather and Zion are training to run 2.6 miles together in the St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee.

I never expected to have such a personally transformative experience by being an intern for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass, but the Redington family proved me wrong. Heather is an amazing mother who definitely understands that love has no limits. The love she has for her children reflects that… and I feel so blessed to have met her.

Thank You to Our Generous Adopt A Family Donors

1 in 8 guest families have to stay longer than 30 days at the Ronald McDonald House in Lexington due to the severity of their child’s medical condition. Long-term families are the least able to contribute financially toward the costs of their stay, so major donors such as

these make it possible for families to stay for as long as they need our services.

Amelia wrapped in a bow and ready to go! Amelia’s parents called the House a home away from home for 10 days.

Brody and Branson having a sweet treat to celebrate the big One, their family called the Ronald McDonald House home for 97 days.

What I enjoy most about volunteering is providing coffee and snacks at no charge to people who are tired and worried. I enjoy

talking to those who want to talk. They seem to appreciate you caring about why they are at the hospital. As you talk, some

mention their personal lives and it enables one to talk to them about what they do and get their mind off their worries for a brief time.
