IN MEMORY OF PAUL CLARK

The RMHC-CNI community celebrates the life of Paul Clark, past board chairman and McDonald’s Owner/Operator, who died in December 2016.

Rama Chikfeh had major lifesaving surgery on her jaw that brought the family to Chicago from Syria in 2011. Her family, including mom Bana, stayed at the Ronald McDonald House® at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital during Rama’s treatments.

What strikes Bana is that her first night at the house meant she could actually sleep without “hearing beeping machines.” Like all our families, she calls it a home. “Ronald McDonald House gave me a chance to understand the American family. They have a great heart,” says Bana.

OUR CHAPTER

ABOUT RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES® OF CHICAGOLAND & NORTHWEST INDIANA

OUR COVER FAMILY

RMHC-CNI is an independent not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to care for families of children with complex medical needs while their child is being treated in the hospital.

Each night, we keep 153 families close to the care and resources they need because of the comfort, compassion and community at five area Ronald McDonald Houses and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. We are located near Advocate Children’s Hospital, Loyola University Medical Center, University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Edward Hospital in Naperville and Central DuPage Hospital.

RMHC-CNI also operates a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® with Advocate Children’s Hospital which provides free medical care to children in underserved areas as well as a Scholarship Program for local college students.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and our talented team, we are pleased to share with you our 2016 Annual Report. We hope you are inspired by the thousands of families who have been touched through our Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room, Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, and Scholarship programs.

In harmony with the Charity’s Vision 2020 Strategic Plan, our Annual Business Plan goals and objectives centered the core areas of Mission Impact, Brand Health, and Organizational Development. This year we served more families, eliminated capital debt for the first time in over a decade, and strengthened our infrastructure to sustain services for children and their families. We realize none of this would have been possible if it were not for the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners who supported our efforts. We continue to be vigilant about your gifts, directing 68% of our income towards our programs.

Thanks so much for helping to keep families with sick children close to each other, enabling them to get the care and resources they need.

Gratefully,

Michael Kotynek Chairman of the Board of Directors

Holly Buckendahl CEO

3RMHC-CNI 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

30In 2016, our Ronald McDonald House near University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital celebrated the remarkable milestone of serving 24,000 families for the past thirty years. Over 300 guests gathered on September 17, recalling memories of loved ones and remembering the special care that has always taken place there.

Known as the “Family Place,” the second Ronald McDonald House in Chicago opened its doors on September 22, 1986, with a vision to “serve families in their greatest time of need.” The first families were welcomed to the 12-bedroom home by a group of dedicated volunteers who served meals, cleaned rooms and much more.

As sub-specialty pediatric care expanded over the next thirty years, our Ronald McDonald House on Chicago’s south side grew and relocated several times to accommodate even more families from all over the world. Today, the beautiful house includes 22 bedrooms, a large kitchen where volunteers serve meals, and common areas where families gather to share and find comfort.

”Different families from different places, every night with a place to stay while their child is sick. This

House is a true blessing for so many families. It’s a wonderful place that has been around for 30 years.”

OUR 2016 COMMUNITY IMPACT

Honoring A Very Special Family

The 2016 Ann Eppen Award Volunteer Recognition recipients are the Freedlund family whose daughter Mattea died in 2010. The Freedlund’s foundation, Mattea’s Joy, provides needed resources for families while in the hospital. This dedicated family serves meals, organizes snack boxes and so much more. “When you are going through something like that, not having to think about where you’ll stay or what you’ll eat makes a huge difference,” says mom Jamie. “The house is a lifeline.”

Administering Free Healthcare for Children

Through our partnership with Advocate Children’s Hospital, our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile visited over 30 schools throughout the Chicago area, providing healthcare to high-risk and medically underserved children. “These children are now able to stay in school, receive necessary immunizations and get connected with a primary care provider,” says Joanna Lewis, MD, FAAP, Associate Program Director. “These lives could not be touched without our partnership.”

Celebrating a Special Grad

Scholarship Program recipient Kjersten Johnson and her family know first-hand the value of the Ronald McDonald House. Her family used the House near Lurie Children’s Hospital while Kjersten underwent cancer treatment during high school. “It was comforting to know the House was there for us,” she explains. Kjersten entered Hope College in Fall 2016 and offers these words of great wisdom: “Don’t ever underestimate yourself. You are capable of far more than you think you are.”
