RITE OF THE LAMP

(TO BE CELEBRATED ON WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK)

February 2019

2

A ball of dough is placed in a bowl and is covered with olive oil. Seven wicks are placed in the dough.

Opening Prayer

STAND

Cel: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

Cel: Lord God, by your divine teaching, and through our tears and repentance, make us worthy to bind and to heal the wounds which we have sustained because of our sins. May we, your servants, meet you with purity and with enlightened souls, and enjoy the eternal blessings of your kingdom to glorify you with the lambs on your right. And we will raise glory to you, to your Father, and to your Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

First Vigil Prayer

Cel: O Lord, you are pure and holy, and you absolve the faults of those who turn to you for refuge. O Sea of Mercies and Compassion, you forgave the sins and debts of the sinful woman, who came to you in the house of Simon Peter, and who washed your feet with her tears and perfumed your head with fragrant oil. You ordered that her name be inscribed in your Holy Gospel of Life that she may be remembered. As you forgave her sins, grant repentance to your servants and forgive their sins. With the grace of your mercy, blot out their sins, for you are the hope of the living and you welcome penitents. To you be glory, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

Epistle

SIT

A reading from the letter of Saint James. (James 5: 13-18)

Brothers and Sisters,

Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.

Praise be to God always!

Cantor: Have mercy on me, Lord, for I languish. Lord, heal me; my bones are shaking. (Psalm 6:3)

Cong: hem oo-hem

Cel: From the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke, who proclaimed life to the world. Let us listen to the proclamation of life and salvation for our souls. (Luke 10: 25-37)

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”

4

He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.

A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise, a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise”.

This is the truth! Peace be with you.

With all the sons and daughters of your Holy Church, we confidently raise glory to you, to your Father, and to your Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

Epistle

SIT

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. (Romans 15: 1-7)

Brothers and Sisters,

We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves; let each of us please our neighbor for the good, for building up. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you fall upon me.” For whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Praise be to God always!

Cel: From the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew, who proclaimed life to the world. Let us listen to the proclamation of life and salvation for our souls. (Matthew 15: 21-31)

Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.”

She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour. Moving on from there Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up on the mountain, and sat down there. Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them. The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel.

This is the truth! Peace be with you.

Third Vigil STAND

Prayer

Cel: O Good Physician, when you took the hand of Simon Peter’s mother-in-law who was lying on her bed, she suddenly rose from her infirmity and she was immediately occupied with the work of your service. Now, O Lord, in your mercy, support, heal, and strengthen these your servants, and we will raise glory to you, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

Epistle

SIT

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians. (Ephesians 6: 10-17)

Brothers and Sisters,

Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So, stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Praise be to God always!

Cel: From the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew, who proclaimed life to the world. Let us listen to the proclamation of life and salvation for our souls. (Matthew 8:14-22)

Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and waited on him. When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick, to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet: “He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.” When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side. A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But Jesus answered him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.”

This is the truth! Peace be with you.

Kyrie eleison. Praise the Lord God! By your death you conquered Death and Satan who caused Adam’s death. Put to death, O Lord, the sin that dwells in us and set us free. O Good Shepherd, you went out to find the lost sheep who wandered from the fold. Lord, search for us as the woman searched to find the coin that she had lost. Christ, you came to seek the lost. We praise your great mercy shown to those who sinned. Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Epistle

SIT

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians. (Galatians 5: 22-6:2)

Brothers and sisters,

In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ, have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another. Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Praise be to God always!

Cel: From the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew, who proclaimed life to the world. Let us listen to the proclamation of life and salvation for our souls. (Matthew 25:1-13)

Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

This is the truth! Peace be with you.

King of glory, we poor sinners, ask for mercy and pardon. In your kindness, hear our prayers, Lord, let your gates now be opened. May your Mother, Blessèd Mary, intercede for us sinners. May the martyrs, who were faithful, offer prayers for your people. Show us mercy in your love. We will praise and thank you, Lord.

Fifth Vigil STAND

Prayer

Cel: Lord God, you humbled yourself and became poor so that we may become rich. In your holy Gospels you told us: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” And: “I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.” Accept, O Lord, these your servants and bring them to your fold of repentance, and we will raise glory to you, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

Epistle

SIT

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. (Romans 12:1-5)

Brothers and sisters,

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. For by the grace given to me I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than one ought to think, but to think soberly, each according to the measure of faith that God has apportioned. For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another.

Praise be to God always!

Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him. Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Epistle

SIT

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians. (Ephesians 2:4-10)

Brothers and sisters,

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

Praise be to God always!

Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death. Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “You may go; your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, “The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon.” The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe. Now this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.

Moses asked that Aaron burn sweet incense, Lord, for the people’s many sins. As you pardoned Israel so long ago, now forgive our sins. Through the prayers of faithful priests, grant forgiveness to your flock that worships in truth. Keep your anger far from us. We implore you with our tears; pardon us, O Lord, we pray.

SeventhVigil STAND

Prayer

Cel: Let us raise glory, honor, praise, worship, exaltation, and thanks to the exalted Lord, who, out of his love for us, descended to us and tasted death in the flesh, on behalf of Adam and returned him to his inheritance in Eden. He opened the great treasury of his compassion for us, and in his grace, cleansed us of our sins. To the Good One be glory and honor, at this time, and all the days of our lives, now and for ever.

Epistle

SIT

A Reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. (2 Corinthians 4:6-10)

Brothers and sisters,

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

Praise be to God always!

While Jesus was saying these things to them, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. She said to herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.” Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.” And from that hour the woman was cured. When Jesus arrived at the official’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, he said, “Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they ridiculed him. When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. And news of this spread throughout all that land.

Blessing of the Oil of Penitents STAND

The Celebrant bows down with his hands joined, praying in a low voice:

Cel: O Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you alone are the essence of truth, and you sent him for our salvation. Through you the seraphim and the heavenly angels of fire and spirit are sanctified, and through the abundance of your infinite mercies, you have deemed our human race worthy to be created in your likeness, giving the power of your kingdom to Adam. You created him from worthless dust, yet you pardoned him in the name of the life-giving Trinity; and behold, the glory of the First Adam, which was corrupted, was renewed, in your mercy, by your only begotten Son. You manifested yourself to Moses, instructing him to anoint Aaron and his sons with holy oil. These ancient symbols and signs grew weak, but they were strengthened for us through the manifestation of your Son. Now we offer you our prayers of adoration, with those of the prophets and the apostles, that through your mercies our faith may be perfected.

The Celebrant extends his hands and prays aloud the Epiclesis of the Oil of Penitents:

Cel: O Lord, may your living Holy Spirit, come and consecrate + this oil. May it be perfected in your power, and may your divinity dwell within it, that this oil may be the oil of gladness in the Holy Spirit: a renewing oil, a consecrating oil, an angelic armor against the power of the enemy. May it bring everlasting joy to the hearts of those who believe in it, so that those who are anointed by it, as a renewing oil, may remain unshaken and shine as stars in the heavens with purity and holiness. May there be in them neither stain nor blemish, when the just ones shall shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father, and with them and among them they will raise glory to you, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.

25

Anointing The faithful come forward and are anointed on the forehead by the priest, as he says:

Cel: For the pardon of your sins and the forgiveness of your faults, and for the strengthening of your bodies, as the paralytic was strengthened.

During the anointing, the following hymn is sung:

You Came for the Sheep Syriac: Bo’ooto dmor yaqoob (Minor)

1. You came for the sheep who were lost. Search for us now, we pray. Bring us back to your fold, O Good Shepherd. To sinners you open your door. In your love open wide to your servants who knock. Let us enter.

2. O Lord, with the sign of your cross, keep us safe from all harm. May our senses be free from temptation. We ask that our eyes may be pure and our ears be inclined to obey your commands with devotion.

3. We ask that our mouths sing your praise; may our senses delight in the fragrance of life everlasting. O Lord, may our hands always knock on the door of your house; may our feet walk the path to your temple.

26

4. With all of the senses we have, may our souls sing your praise and give glory to you, God Most Holy. Forgive and grant pardon to us. We have sinned in your sight, both in body and soul. Show your mercy.

Final Prayer

Cel: O Lord, extend the right hand of your mercy and send a merciful angel to heal these your servants. Banish and remove from them every fever and cold, all sickness and fear, and all evil spirits which have power on this earth. You cured Simon Peter’s mother-in-law from fever, and the hemorrhaging woman from her affliction; you showed mercy to the widow whose son had died, and you called Lazarus from the tomb, giving him new life; you healed the Centurion’s servant by your word; you extinguished the flames to protect Hananiah and his companions, and you tamed the lions in their den to spare your servant Daniel.

Now, Lord God, compassionate and merciful, abundant in grace and in truth, extend your right hand + which is full of mercy and heal these your servants, through the prayers of all those who were pleasing to you, from the foundations of the world to this day, and we will raise glory to you, now and for ever.

Cong: Amen.
