How have your skills in postproduction developed?
Advice: Plan your answer first!
Identify which productions/activities you are going to refer
to make sure they include activities from AS and A2
Identify specific examples of the production practice
ideally the same activity across two different
productions so that you can show skills development

Activity:
With the person sitting next to you , pick out two activitiesthat you did at AS that you repeated at A2. This could be:using transitions; laying your sequence on the timeline inFCP; manipulation of images in your digipaks (dont forgetthat you produced one at AS too!); Discuss.
Using Kolbs reflective cycle reflect on the skill the firsttime you did it, and then the second time.
How successful was the skill the first time you did it?
What did you learn?
What differences did you notice the second time around?
What impact did this skill have on your creativity?
How have your skills in post
production developed?

Step 7: Examine your final experience of using this skilland reflect back on how well youve developed.
Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for another skill
Note: You must remember to include lots of
detailed examples of when youve used the skill so you must reference your projects in detail.

Example route throughpost production
Introduction
Identify level of skill at start of the AS course:
My skills in post production at the start of the AS course were
pretty basic Id not had any experience of editing video before
and only had very limited experience of using packages such as
Photoshop for image manipulation

Introduce the skills and projects that you are going to
discuss
I have produced several different projects over the last two years, from
the short preliminary at the start of the AS practical unit through to the
larger production work at A2. During these productions I havedeveloped a variety of skills in editing.
I am going to focus on how I developed my editing skills, more
specifically using the timeline in FCP, and also how my skills in print
work developed.

Introduce first project and first experience of useof skill that youve identified in your plan
I first time Idownloadedfootage onto FCP, and pieced together my
firsttimelinesequence, I did not really plan how to do this before
hand. It was the preliminary task at AS that required us to produce a
short sequence containing a match cut. I had recorded severalminutes of shots and downloaded the entire lot into FCP. This
resulted in the logging bin being full of clips, many of which I would not
need and none of which I could recognise from the time-code labels. It
took ages for me to sort this through and I wasted valuable editing
time. I ended up swapping clips about on the timeline as I found new
ones in the bin, in an attempt to put together my match cut sequence. Should be continued in more depth.and refer to specific
examples from your project

13/24
Next, evaluate how successful this skill wasOn reflection, this was not the most constructive use of my time. I
should have watched each clip before hand, on the mac, and then made
a list of the ones that I was going to use in my final sequence. If Id
renamed the clips using suitable names then I could have found them
more easily in the bin. This would have made editing the match-cut a
quicker process and I could have spent more time learning how to put
transitions on the clips.

14/24
What happened next, as a result of this?
Through the match cut tutorial, I learnedhow to create a sequence in a
linear style, where the clips follow on one from the other on the same
video track. Forexample, the first clip was of an establishing shot of the
outside of the college, which then cut immediately to another clip on the
same video track of the corridor on the third floor thus establishing for
the audience the location that the action was set within. I realised that
this was pretty simple editing, but I felt confident in my skills through
learning this first.

And the final project that you used this skill in:
The final time I came to edit a sequence in FCP was for my music
video during my A2 year. Here I used the time line in a completely
different way to the previous projects Id created. Wed recorded
several base tracks and I used these 5 base tracks as the basis
and outline structure for my music video. One base track was a
close up of the singer, the second was a long shot from the back of
the room, the third was. (You get the picture.). I layed them
one on top of the other, and using the razor blade tool, cut into
them at paced intervals to create a structure.
