An idea is salvation by imagination- Frank Lloyd Wright.

The growth of our future is dependent on the current environ-ment of our surroundings. This thesis project aims to building a monumental tower that monitors our atmosphere environ-ment as it worsen over time by filtering harmful air particles. Over the last 100 years Shanghai has been experiencing an escalation of it's air pollution problem that remains unsolved. With multiple international settlements and the expansion of modern skyscrapers, the identity of shanghai has becomeconfused. This tower serves to rethink the function of our building designs in regard to style, and health.

  • The security door found on the streets of Hollywood shows the merging of the past and the present styles in architec -ture. This object was selected as a symbol echoing my thesis paper, Fashioning in Architecture: An Investigative Study in city development; where I wrote a comparative analysis of how the past social influences has driven fashion and architecture styles, and how the present social influence is lost in the idea of sustainability. The subject of what is to be sustainable in economical, social and environmental form became the key part of this thesis project. The challenge in this project is to seek an opportunity to create something that would be a solution to the current environmental issue in the city, and also be a positive impact for future design.

T PVC PIPES STRUCTURETO UTILIZE VINYL TO ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL, THE DESIGN

PROPOSES AN EXTERIOR STRUCTURE THAT IS COMPLETELY

MADE OF PVC PIPES. THIS EXTREMELY TOUGH YET FLEXIBLE

MATERIAL IS WOVEN INTO A SPACE FRAME SYSTEM THAT TRANSFERS LOAD FROM THE ROOF DOWN TO THE GROUND. THESE PIPES ARE JOINED WITH A

CONNECTION COMPONENT, RANGING FROM A 2-WAY TO A

6-WAY, WITH THE ANGLES ADJUSTED FOR INDIVIDUAL

JOINTS. WITH ONLY 1/6 OF THE DENSITY OF STEEL, PVC

CAN TAKE UP TO 25% OF THE YIELD STRENGTH POSSIBLE

FOR A36 STRUCTURAL STEEL. PVC ALSO HAS A TENSILE STRENGTH OF 7000PSI, AND A COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 11000PSI, WITH A 10% DEFLECTION.

AIR-FILLED ETFE PILLOWSWITH THE PVC PIPES ACTING AS A BASIC FRAME, ETFE (ETHYLENE

TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE) MEMBRANES ARE ATTACHED TO EACH

SPACE ON BOTH THE EXTERIOR AND THE INTERIOR. THEY CREATE

A SMOOTH AND NON-STICK TRANSLUCENT SURFACE THAT ALLOWS FOR THE BUILDING TO SELF-CLEAN BY RAIN. AIR IS

BLOWN INTO THEM TO CREATE AN INFLATED PILLOW THAT IS RESISTANT TO DEGRADATION FROM BOTH UV LIGHT AND

ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION. AN INERT FLUOROPOLYMER, THIS

VINYL-BASED MATERIAL CONTAINS NO LEACHABLE ADDICTIVES.

THE WATER-BASED RESIN PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR ETFE DOES

NOT USE ANY SOLVENT, AND REQUIRES MUCH LESS ENERGY

COMPARED TO GLASS PRODUCTION. ALTHOUGH ETFE IS NEITHER

BIODEGRADABLE NOR NATURAL, IT COULD BE 100% RECYCLED. TRANSPORTATION COST AND ENERGY ARE REDUCED BECAUSE THESE MEMBRANES ARE VERY LIGHT. THEY

CAN BE INFLATED ON SITE EASILY AND EFFICIENTLY.
