HOME BUYERS in WA are paralysed byfear when it comes to finding their dreamproperty due to the “fear of missing out”phenomenon (FOMO).

According to new research released byrealestate.com.au, FOMO is a consumerbehaviour that causes paralysis in buyerswho are overcome by anxiety, believingthere is a better property out there.

The results show FOMO is reachingepic proportions among home buyers,with 85 per cent of potential propertybuyers in WA inspecting numerousproperties and spending exhaustiveamounts of time researching them.

This is evidenced by the fact over half(56 per cent) of those currently on thehunt for a property have been activelylooking for six months, with 15 per centsearching for more than a year.

The research showed that homehunters in WA and SA spent an average7.8 months looking for their next home,compared with the national average of6.5.

Consumer behaviour expert Dr ChrisHodkinson said a certain level of FOMOis expected when it comes to buying anew home, however the figures suggestFOMO is causing excessive worry withsome homebuyers, who are unable tomake a decision.

“Interestingly, FOMO is not justrestricted to property decisions, it canaffect people socially, professionally andeven romantically, with sufferersexperiencing symptoms of FOMO whendeciding what to do on a Saturday night,through to deciding whether or not to goon a date,” he said.

Dr Hodkinson said sufferers thatexperience a heightened level of FOMOused two or more websites to search forproperties, further exacerbating theircondition. Even more concerning is that92 per cent of property seekers spendover a day a month (up to 25 hours)researching potential homes online andmore than 80 per cent of Australians visitup to four properties a week.

Realestate.com.au group manager forconsumer marketing Henry Ruizacknowledged the FOMO phenomenoncould be an issue for property seekers.

“We identified a need to give propertyseekers confidence and thereforeminimise their experience of FOMO byoffering a website that has more propertylistings than any other property portal inAustralia,’’ he said.
