OUR SNAIL TRAIL COUNTERS

& MEASURERS

NOVEMBER This is one of the busiest planning months of the school year. There are so many tasks to be completed so that the 2019 begins calmly, smoothly and in an organised way. Some of the really important tasks include working on the 2019 budgets, deciding on costs, ensuring adequate staffing levels are maintained, meeting our lovely new Foundation students, working with Year 6 students on their Graduation and of course class structure and student placement. If you have specific requests regarding your child’s placement next year, please come and talk to me. We cannot take orders for particular teachers (sorry), but are keen to hear of anything that may impact upon the learning of your child. There will be a deadline for this as once we have set up the classes we cannot make changes. So if you want to talk to me, please do so in the next couple of weeks.

Remembrance Day in Australia

SUNDAY 11 November 2018 Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased, especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Remembrance Day is annually observed on November 11 although it is not a public holiday.

The poppy is a popular Remembrance Day symbol.

What do people do? Many Australians stop what they are doing at exactly 11am in their local times on November 11 each year to dedicate a minute of silence for those who died in war, especially soldiers from as far back as World War I. Those who join in this act of remembrance include teachers, students, politicians, and workers of public and private sector enterprises.

Many people wear artificial poppies on the day and key political figures make speeches in remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes. Services are held at 11am at war memorials in suburbs and towns across the country, at which the “Last Post” is played by a bugler and a one-minute silence is observed. Remembrance Day has been partly eclipsed by ANZAC Day as the national day of war commemoration.

Remembrance Day is not a public holiday in Australia, however many workers stop what they are doing at 11am for a minute of unified silence before resuming work again.

The Junior School Council will be selling items on behalf of the Reservoir RSL. Children can purchase the following items from the classrooms at lunch eating time from the Junior School Council Representatives:

Small Poppy Pin $1.00

Poppies $2.00

Poppy Wristband $3.00

JEANS FOR GENES An official letter of thanks: Dear Reservoir Primary, Thank you so much for your wonderful support of Jeans for Genes. Your contribution makes a real and immediate difference to our researchers’ ability to find the causes and new treatments for childhood genetic diseases affecting 1 in 20 Aussie kids. On behalf of everyone at CMRI and countless future generations of Aussie kids, please accept my heartfelt thanks for supporting Jeans for Genes. I hope you had a wonderful time helping us. Yours sincerely, Andrew Kelly Head of Fundraising

HAPPY TEACHERS’ DAY

Celebrated internationally on 5 October, World Teachers’ Day was established in 1994 by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recognise the vital role of qualified teachers in our society. In 2018, World Teachers' Day was celebrated in Victoria on Friday 26th October. Every day, Victorian teachers are supporting children and young people by improving student outcomes and shaping their lives for future success. We recognise the high quality of our teachers, principals and the significant contributions

they make in our classrooms and communities. World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge this valuable work and celebrate the wonderful achievements made by teachers across the State. Thank you Young Leaders, Junior School Councillors and Maria Mirasgentis

SNAIL TRAIL FUNDRAISING

Our latest fundraising event proved to be exciting and innovative. It was an initiative suggested by our Parents and Friends Association and we thank you for the idea. This event helped raise $417.70 and considering it was loose change found in many different places it proved to be lots of fun. The sun was shining bright on Friday the 26th of October when all classes gathered on the basketball court ready to line up their coins. It was not so much the value of each coin but who could create the longest trail by lining up each coin side by side. This required lots of patience and steady hands. Parents, children and teachers waited with anticipation while the judges measured each trail. Group 13 was announced the winner and others came close. Congratulations to our winners and all classes for making such a great effort. Money raised from all groups will go towards the school purchasing some items for our students. Thank you Young Leaders/ Junior School Councillors and Maria Mirasgentis.

Ride2school October 2018

DISEASE PREVENTION Physical activity is ranked second to tobacco control as the most important factor in disease prevention in Australia. Research shows, students who are physically active are healthier, happier and more socially connected.

At Reservoir Primary we support the Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program in a hope that we develop a healthy active travel culture. The Ride 2School program is supported and funded by the Victorian State Government and uses behaviour change methodologies to increase the number of students actively travelling to school all year round.

Here is an overall ‘Hands up Survey” for our students on the morning of Thursday the 18th of October 2018. Ride/Skate/Scoot 14 students Walk 99 students Car 172 students Public Transport 12 students Our Active Travel rate for the school was 38.05% which is a large drop for us. It appears the wet weather and slight wind deterred families from being active. The data showed a large increase in students arriving to school by car on this morning and some using public transport as opposed to nil last month.

The winner of the Active Traveller Award in the F-2 area of the school was Group 1 with 63% and in the 3-6 area of the school was Group 8 with 70% of students walking or riding to school for the month of October. Congratulations to all our active students from Groups 1 and 8.

Did your class make the Top 5? F-2 3-6 1. Group 1 with 63% 1. Group 8 with 70% 2. Group 16 with 47% 2. Group 14 with 53% 3. Group 17 with 45% 3. Group 7 with 52% 4. Group 3 with 33% 4. Group 13 with 43% 5. Group 5 and 2 with 29% 5. Group 11 with 42% 6. Group 10 with 20% 6. Group 12 with 35% 7. Group 9 with 19% 7. Group 6 with 22% Our next Ride2School morning will be Tuesday 20th November 2018. Keep fit, Keep active, Ride2school Thank you Young Leaders/Junior School Councillors and Maria Mirasgentis.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS REPORTS – 19/10/18 Rounders A: Our first game started with a bang. It was a hot sunny day. We won the toss and chose to field. We were

heading to a great start but as the game went on we didn’t get any home runs in the first 2 innings. When we found out our scores we were pleasantly surprised. It was Reservoir 6 and William Ruthven 5. We are very excited about the next game against Our Lady of the Way. Well done to Isabella, Arielle, Despoina, Tanysha, Annelise, Makelita, Tannaya, and Giselle for an amazing first game. Rounders B: The sun shone in our face as we began to play. We were all ready to play our first game against William

Ruthven. We were batting first. Our team was Litia, Chantel, Sajada, Jessica, Eve, Anaelle, Indy and Chaltu. Litia batted first and managed to make it around all 4 bases and home. Sajada, Jessica, Anaelle and Eve were out but luckily Indy made it home. Litia made first base but unfortunately, she didn’t make it to 2nd base. Chaltu almost made it home but unluckily she was outrun to the home base. Chantel was the last batter and made it to third base but unfortunately, it was side away. We did not win and the scores were 16 to 3, but we still had a fun game.

Bat Tennis A: It was a hot … beautiful 29 degree day, and it was good weather to play Bat Tennis. Our first round of the

Summer Sports Season for 2018. We were playing against William Ruthven. Lily and James played our Singles A matches and they both won easily, 9 games to 0. Reece was paired up with Matthew for Doubles A. It was hard. Reece made a few small mistakes but he tried his best. We ended up winning, 9-2. The Doubles A girls were Prapti and Safa. The scores were 0-9. William Ruthven won that one but we all had a great day! We can’t wait to play Our Lady of the Way next week, so let’s go Reservoir!!

Bat Tennis B: Last Friday was a beautiful day to play Bat Tennis. We played against William Ruthven. Let’s start with my

game. It took FOREVER! We got to 8 games all and then we had to have a TIE BRAKER. It took what felt like 375 days but finally I won 7-2. Louis played an amazing game for the “boys single B team” and won 9-0. Ellen and Ishmeet sadly lost 0-9. Miljan and Yunes won 9-0. Congratulations to all the Bat Tennis players for a great first game of the season!

Hardball Cricket: It was a windy day to play Hard Ball Cricket. The sun was shining and the smell of freshly cut grass filled

the air. We were playing against William Ruthven. They won the toss and decided to field. Our opening batsmen were Adem and Tabriz. They were followed by James Z, Russell, Aqeel and Mason. We scored 4/33 in tricky batting conditions. It was our turn to bowl. Tabriz, James Z, Aqeel, Russell, Jad and Chris and Adem all did a fantastic job at bowling and Oscar, Boutros and Ali were amazing in the field. William Ruthven scored 1/79. Even though we lost we still had a great game. We are looking forward to playing against Our Lady of the Way today.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS REPORTS – 26/10/18 Rounders A: We looked into their fierce eyes and we knew the game was on. We flipped the bat. I won the toss. We were

going to field. Giselle, Tannaya and Bella did a great job on their bases. Everyone played really well and it was a close and tough game. The total scores were 8 – 9. Our Lady Of The Way won the game. Great job to the team for such a great game.

Rounders B: It was a beautiful day. Despoina, Litia, Eve, Sajada, Indy, Chantel, Romana, Jessica and I were looking forward

to playing against Our Lady of the Way. Despoina got two home runs along with Eve, while Litia, Indy, Chantel, Romana and Jessica got one home run each. The final scores were Reservoir 9 to Our Lady 10. We had an amazing game even though we lost. We improved so much and look forward to our next game.

Hardball Cricket: It was a lovely day to play hardball cricket against Our Lady of the Way. They won the toss and chose to

bowl first. Boutros was first to bat. He didn’t make any runs but he still tried. Then it was Jad’s turn. He really helped us get our rhythm with 9 runs. We felt strong with Tabriz batting even though he didn’t get any runs. He was still happy because he got to play. It didn’t stop there because when Adem came to the crease to bat, he got 30 runs! Then James got us 1 more run before it was time to switch. When we were bowling, we got three out thanks to Mason, Adem and James. The score at the end was Reservoir 3 out for 52 to Our Lady of the Way were 2 out for 31 runs. We were glad to get our first win of the season and we can’t wait to play Reservoir Views next.
